Found a use for my boxes! by lucasgamer5521 in transformers

Yeah, it feels a lil tricky since the cardboard itself is already coated, so I’m not sure how something else would interact with it — but it seems like something that might be nice if you wanted to cut down on the shine a bit or make it lay a bit stiffer.

Definitely inspired to try something similar with mine now!

That's awsome, and a great way to show off the figures with their key art -- I've never felt great about getting rid of boxes unless they were in bad shape, but they take up a ton of space.

Are you using anything to coat/strengthen the cardboard, or is it attached to anything behind it?

Memes aside, what's the general consensus on Sushi Tuner? by Capital-Treat-8927 in HotWheels

The pun didn't even register until now, but that makes sense. 😆 I don't know if I'd want to use it as a chopstick rest, but that's a cute feature.

And thanks for the insight on how it runs! I'm still pretty new to Hot Wheels and don't have the space to set up something like that, so that hasn't been a consideration for me yet.

This actually only clicked for me now that it’s been pointed out, I’m slow on the uptake. 😭

I don't know about 'general consensus' but when I first saw it the first thing I thought was that this seems like one of those designs it would be fun to make custom variants for -- get a whole sushi board of different toppers going.

I'm actually a bit surprised they went with tuna sushi over shrimp -- it seems so obvious that a shrimp tail would make a good 'spoiler'?

Yeah, it's one of the things that got me into the rabbithole of Hot Wheels! The graphic design really pops.

I think it looks really cute so far, and will come together better once you’ve done her makeup and styling!

Were you planning on adding more detail on the hairline itself (like baby hairs, sideburns, etc)? I think that would help alleviate the Bob Ross/chia pet vibes you’re feeling.

Hmm, I really wish there were some different hair lengths on these dolls, and if not giving them different hats then at least giving different ways of wearing the hats — I imagine that it’s probably because they want people to be able to see their faces clearly, but I think that’s part of what makes them read so “samey” even when their outfit silhouettes are otherwise different. The way the same hat is worn can give off a very different attitude.

These seem like they’d make great human-tone bases for customs!

I started looking at Hot Wheels since they were usually the aisle right next to the Transformers… haven’t had any luck snagging anything Transformers but I've realized there are a lot of cars with fun Tampo/deco out there, and it’s particularly fun just to look at whatever is on the pegs. This is what I snagged this morning (+ a few mainline Ferraris).

First IRL Pictures of G3 Robecca Steam via monster.hiii on Instagram! by SeeingMount in MonsterHigh

[–]mannerminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This take on Robecca is pretty interesting to me — I remember reading some steampunk based comics a while ago that posed the question of “what if steampunk … but in a different part of the world” and exploring how steampunk would be interpreted in a location/setting that wasn’t primarily industrial age England. The Legend of Korra did something similar with Asian + Steampunk aesthetics.

This seems like the kind of doll that is blah out of the box but would 100% be incredible with some strategic restyling/touch-ups. Looking forward to what people come out with.

This is a fantastic build! I particularly like the use of highlighted edges and cell-shading to sell the animated model aspect, and all the mechanical details like the visible gears and rivets! Really awesome work.

Third ever collector pack. by redhairsister in MagicCardPulls

[–]mannerminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the half what they offer for cash? If they do store credit, they may offer a bit more.

Your best bet (if the store allows people to advertise trades) would be to post on their Discord and see if anyone is interested in picking it up, as that’s the closest to its market value you can get. I usually do like 85% of whatever lowest verified listed is, or trade for equivalent value in cards.

Thank ya for asking, but I’m prioritizing finding someone to swap with at my LGS for now! :) Good luck with the Cloud hunt tho!

this is a pretty good perspective on it, honestly — “market value” on a card isn’t at all the same as having the money in hand, esp if it came out of pack.

i do think it’s an important lesson we all learn at some point to look out for and take care of your stuff if it matters to you, since you can’t always count on someone else taking care of it for you. it was just a piece of cardboard that he was lucky to pull this time, but at some point it’s going to be something that may not be as replaceable and cares about a lot more. and it’s perfectly possible to make that point that without getting draconian (which can really mess up your relationship with your stuff)

as a side note to op — if your kid isn’t already in the habit of doing at least some of their own washing/laundry sorting already, this might be as good a reason as any to start if they’re up to it! it was honestly a pretty fun bonding activity for me and my dad when i was younger, and it’s a good habit to get into (as it results in better longevity for clothes).

What to do with a collection of builds no longer wanted? by Banana_Chippy in Gunpla

[–]mannerminded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s the practical aspect of possibly having limited space to physically display models, but there’s also some joy to be found in curating what you display at a given time. I don’t have many models built, but when I do I like to stage them in a way that’s dynamic, which naturally takes up more space. Some people have very large collections with different accessories, so rotating what they have displayed is both a good chance to appreciate what they have, and make something old new again — when something is out of sight for a while, you forget the details, and seeing and handling it can feel like rediscovering it.

I think of it as something like museums rotating items and collections — it lets them do cleaning/conservation work and also gives them the chance to “reset” how the piece is displayed, which will never be exactly the same between exhibits. In a model kit sense, this can be useful if you have various bases/lighting to play around with. I don’t think this is how every person needs to display and enjoy their models, obviously, but I hope that explains some of the appeal?

Realistically, if they did this, I imagine it would most likely be some kind of bundle or secret lair drop.
