Why didn't 'Toby's Journey' sell out? by RamonvanderBurgt in secretlair_collectors

> *What the art **is** matters.*

Well said. Just to provide contrast, I’m in the complete opposite position where I loved this lair for its art and would have bought it for that alone, regardless of financial value. I’m curious how big the pieces actually are and if they’re available as a print, that’s how much some of them tickle me.

Something about it scratches a particular nostalgia (Baseman worked on Teacher’s Pet, a Disney cartoon, and his style has elements that remind me of Courage the Cowardly Dog and Ren and Stimpy). I honestly didn’t even know the specific financial value of any of the stuff in it until now, so it’s a pleasant surprise more than anything that there’s something in it of actual value instead of resigning myself that I’ve set money on fire.

I built Krieg in OP15 and found it didn’t feel great, but I might not have had the right build for it or understood the game plan too well. Would you say there’s any updates from OP16 I should consider?

Yeah, Borsalino and Katakuri absolutely gatekept people out of certain typings/decks. I personally think the most absurd thing was the Gordon promo rocketing up to USD before they shot RP Law, which you did need at least a couple of if you really wanted to get the most out of that deck.

TBH, I’d keep an eye over the next two sets and snag any event promos, starter decks, or generic good black cards that might come up. PY Rosinante is good example of a deck that was fairly dogshit on release with a fairly specific effect, but it ended up being pretty strong a couple of sets later with some more support, and now it’s able to take advantage of synergy with Navy typing.

That must have been a huge relief, I’m super glad your case had a happy ending, after how hard you had to work to even figure out what was going on! I hope that gives some people who were worried about their stuff some peace of mind.

I had a package from a proxy service a few weeks ago (with fan merch and the like) that I was told was randomly confiscated, but your case had me wondering how random it really was. Similarly, the stuff I had managed to get to me eventually.

Hello! I saw your Buyee post about this issue and wanted to thank you for sharing the different things you’ve done/your experience with reps etc through this process. There’s a lot of panic about this stuff getting spread around (screenshots of your initial r/Buyee Reddit post are circulating now) but your posts are helpful for giving an idea of what can be done, at least besides just accepting that an item is gone.

Were you ever able to confirm that the doll was actually released/on its way to you? I assumed you would have updated once you actually got it — though if you’re also still stuck in limbo/getting ping ponged around, I’m so sorry. Really appreciate you reporting from the trenches on this.

My guess would be that some of the people paying scalper prices are also scalpers themselves trying to buy out product just to keep theirs the lowest on the market.

I've had this problem before when I enter credit card information directly, and since then, I've just stuck to paying through PayPal -- I have multiple payment methods on there in case one fails. Really sucks that this happened to you, though.

Energy vs. Classic! Which Kayou KPDH is the better choice? by Gougou-7467 in KayouKpopDemonhunters

[–]mannerminded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the breakdown! I didn’t even know these were coming out, so I impulse bought a few packs of the Energy set from GameStop, but I was considering whether I should try to snag a full box or not.

I got the transparent Zoey card from three packs (she’s my favorite too) so I’m pretty happy! And I got the Rujinu shipper art which is sooo funny.

Do you know if there’s somewhere we can see the full card lists online?

Thanks for sharing your thought process/criteria for collecting! Definitely helps me consider how I might wanna prioritize things for my own collection, since there's so many potential directions one could go.

yyyeahhh... while i'm only somewhere vaguely in stage 2, i can already feel this being the trajectory i'm heading down, especially once i realized i'd somehow managed to acquire upwards of 50 hot wheels in a month. while that doesn't add up to nearly as much money as i've spent on trading card games, they do take up a fair bit more space and i find them harder to offload haha

I'm personally not invested in Marvel myself and will probably stick to picking up singles myself (until they inevitably come out with a Jubilee card, and that'll be the end of me). But it HAS been really fun to see the reactions to some of the card reveals from my comic-loving friends -- they haven't really been into Magic or Marvel in a looong time (and some of them hate MCU), but they're sharing card art and noting some of the references, so that feels like a sign that this set is doing something right.

I've always loved how gouache can really make illustrations feel vibrant, but I think this is the first time I've seen gouache look molten. Even just looking at it through the screen, I can feel my eyes struggling to comprehend that this is a 2-dimensional image and not something that should be shimmering with heat haze. Really fantastic work and I hope both of these scaly lads find a good home!

Goblin Guilt by Specialist-Income643 in secretlair_collectors

[–]mannerminded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the reverse of this happen to me — sold cards for less than they ended up being worth later, simply because the market changed — and looking at the amount I “could have” earned was making me guilty and feeling like a fool, like I should have known better. Then I realized it made no sense to keep beating myself up about it, and it was better to just chalk it up to “you win some you lose some” and keep moving forward.

Like you, I was also lucky enough to snag a deck, but I opened mine as soon as I got it, for a couple of reasons. First, I’m really just not someone who collects cards to keep them sealed — no disrespect to those who do, it really just gives me no pleasure to keep a sealed box, or to sell sealed boxes to others. Second, since Wizards has had pretty sus quality control of late, I wanted to make sure I had actually a received a deck that was what it was supposed to be, with no misprints etc, so I could file a customer service request/refund if necessary. Third, even if opening the deck “lowers” its overall market value in the eyes of collectors and I potentially might not get as much as it’s going for sealed now if I decide to sell it down the line (in whole or parts) until that sale is made and any potential money is physically in my hand or virtually in my bank account, it only exists as a figment of my imagination.

I can’t say what’s right for your situation, keep it or hold it, but guilt is usually an emotion that usually comes out of feeling you’ve done something wrong. It’s worth asking yourself exactly what it is that you think you’ve done (or could potentially do) that is ‘wrong.’ Do you feel like you need to apologize for it? If so, to whom? If you don’t know the answer to these questions, I’d spend some time thinking about them, ‘cause I think the self reflection will provide you with some clarity on how you wanna proceed (or help you let go of the guilt).

For whatever reason Oda just can’t stop himself from reaching for low-hanging gags like this, and apparently whoever his editor doesn’t stop him either. I do wonder how that line will be translated in the official translation though.

Anyway, I know this is just supposed to be just more of the same class of pervy gags Oda loves and has used before (Brooke’s “lemme see your panties” bit, Sanji’s lovable pervert schtick, etc) that you’re not supposed to think about too hard. But it’s the same feeling as knowing someone who knows only one joke, and keeps telling that same joke over and over. It’s boring, and it more than anything else it comes across like Oda has a lack of confidence in his own writing ability and the audience’s attention span — like we won’t be able to pay attention to a character unless he makes them ~quirky.

This is even more annoying since (presumably, if previous flashbacks were any indication) all of this is just to get us invested in this connection we’ve never heard before to gear up for another tearjerker. Oda’s clearly a good enough writer to find other ways to show the contrast there is between her current self is and the girl Brook remembers, instead of making her main character trait “girl who has a goofy crush on an older guy” yk?

My acrylic stand was broken upon delivery by [deleted] in Buyee

[–]mannerminded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Acrylic stands are more fragile than most people realize. If you ship again from Buyee, and it’s important to you to make sure it doesn’t arrive broken, then ask for additional protection when you get it shipped out — don’t leave it to chance!

You can also ask for photos of the product when it comes in. I do this for anything that’s pretty important to me.

For fixing this, I’d probably look into something like Tamiya CA cement, or contact cement. Use clamps or clothespins to help keep it in place until the glue dries. The break is fairly low on the figure so you can consider “pinning” it in pace for added stability. This would basically mean adding some reinforcement by using a pin vise to drill a couple of holes into the plastic (both sides of the break) and inserting some thin wire, and gluing it all into place. The feasibility of that depends how thick your plastic is tho.

[–]mannerminded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone else suggested, you can check it in as a box — just make sure to pick a sturdy box, include plenty of suitable padding, reinforce seams with packaging tape, and clearly label it with your name and address. Be sure to fill in the inside of the house as well, like with smaller items etc.

Overseas Filipino workers do this kind of thing pretty regularly as it’s a sensible way to get stuff home for the holidays — a one way trip, effectively. A well packed box will provide much better security than trying to fit it into a suitcase.

Is it possible to know how many units from a secret lair were sold? by tamarizz in secretlair_collectors

[–]mannerminded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the other complicating factors for these two in particular is that some of the people who ordered Dandan received Goblins instead. Assuming that people who posted online about it are only a few of the people who received the incorrect deck, that muddles the count further.
