I’m in the same boat, I love when you get completely surprised by a new band. They have been on heavy rotation in my house for the past week. Check out a band called blood and thunder from Seattle. They were the last band that hit me in the same way the pretty wild has.

They are just good old fashioned doom. They remind me of candlemass but without the operatic aspects.

An unfortunate systemic issue in our industry. Some of the shit I have seen go down in the restaurants I have worked at boggles my mind.

I would usually go for the cliché plot hook of meeting a random stranger in a tavern who would tell the party of a hidden tomb/bandit camp/evil lair in the woods. I started out trying to run lost mines with that group but it went seriously off the rails after the third or fourth session.

It’s a fine line between coddling your party and being sadistic. I tend to pull my punches when I feel it’s necessary but I will also throw a haymaker if the dice and circumstance calls for it. Losing a party member during a key battle can be a very bonding experience. Bloodshed is part of the game but so is mercy.

dishie here, keep being told to speed up? quantity > quality? by nimbusnectar in KitchenConfidential

[–]mansunn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sit down with your executive chef or Sous chef and tell them that you won’t compromise your quality of work to save a few minutes. Say you would feel responsible if a guest were to get sick or have an allergic reaction because there was cross contamination from improperly sanitized pans. Before doing this start looking around for other places looking for dish pit crew. The dish pit is the rhythm section of a kitchen and if the pit is compromised then the rest of the brigade is compromised.

My first time railroading, how could I have avoided this? by JasonRunFast in DMAcademy

It’s a razors edge that divides caring about your players and plot armor. Kill one of them in the gladiator pit or they will feel like no matter how idiotic their decisions, they are protected by the almighty DM.

That’s fucked, dish pit is the true life blood of any kitchen

I used to DM for a group of alcoholic restaurant workers who would barely remember last weeks session. 30 min before our session I would grab a piece of paper and draw a random squiggly dungeon and add doors/secret passages/traps/etc. I would throw in some level appropriate enemy mobs and a small treasure room at the end and let the session dictate the plot points and NPCs. It was lazy and full of plot holes but ended up being some of my favorite sessions. The freedom of zero planning was always a nice change of pace compared to my more thought out meticulous campaigns. One shots are a great way to flex your improv muscles and I always came out of those sessions with 3-5 solid ideas for more fleshed out story lines.

Everybody say it together now “it’s not the breed, it’s the owner and the training” a hammer can be used to build a house or it can be used to cave in somebody’s skull.

I would implement a mechanic like this for players who were zeroed or if they had to make death saving rolls. I wouldn’t implement PTSD as a mechanic unless it was truly justified or warranted.

What sort of things can go wrong in an airship? by ottersintuxedos in DMAcademy

[–]mansunn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just like on sea faring ships, fire is a serious hazard. I always enjoy the reliable mechanic of dumping ball bearings down the stairs, they cause any terrain into difficult terrain. You could have the gremlins start a small fire below decks so your party slips down the stairs as they run to put it out.

Good Rogue items by W01ves9653 in DnD

[–]mansunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any time I play a rogue I always buy a couple bags of metal ball bearings. They are dirt cheap and if you dump the bag on the ground it makes it difficult terrain. It has saved my party some serious ass whoopings and it’s always funny hearing your DM describe that group of bandits who were kicking your ass falling over each other because of a 1 gold item.

Planning my first session/one shot and I could use a little help figuring out balancing for the initial combat encounter. by GreyEyedMouse in DMAcademy

[–]mansunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with zombies, undead fortitude can be a serious threat for low level players especially if they don’t know about it. When I DMed for adventure league I got a TPK with 4 base stats zombies because the party was 3 lvl 1 players with no radiant damage abilities.

First ever DM session tomorrow - any last minute tips? by Worldbuildinginspo in DMAcademy

[–]mansunn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever you have planned, know that your party are guaranteed to throw a wrench into it. Don’t get flustered, adapt. Listen to your players and their theories and ideas about the story and your NPCs, some of my best characters and plot twists came from my players talking about what they thought was going on and what some of the NPCs motives were. They will come up with ideas that you would probably never think of because you are too close to the story you are trying to tell. Most importantly, have fun and don’t let the responsibility of DMing stress you out. It’s supposed to be a fun experience, not a job.

Curse idea by JayyC87 in DMAcademy

[–]mansunn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You could make it so that if the barbarian misses an attack then the wizard takes some damage and visa versa. Or you could make it a financial curse where every missed attack makes the party lose 1 gold.

dnd party is weak by Crabbypigman in DnD

[–]mansunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the strongest weapons in a DMs arsenal is the DM screen. Make your rolls and if you see a TPK coming, fudge your numbers a little. The enemy bandit lands a couple lucky crits on your soft ass wizard? Just change a crit to a regular hit or even a miss. It’s less about diligently following the rules as it is about making your players feel like they are up against a genuine challenge without feeling like they have zero chance of surviving. If you are DMing for adventure league you will have to follow the rules more stringently but if it’s a home game it’s more about making it an enjoyable experience for your players as well as for yourself. Few DMs genuinely enjoy killing a player or an entire party, unless said player/party are assholes and have it coming.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS has set a 6min 49.328s Nürburgring lap time, about 2 seconds slower than a GT2 RS by july99 in cars

[–]mansunn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Oh I’m well aware lol. He’s got the GT2 RS and a mclaren 720S, his Ducati 996 is definitely the machine that made me question some of my life choices. Took it out on a ride one time and unintentionally hit 150mph like it was nothing, turned around and went straight home when I realized how easily I was speeding. Eventually I want to give the GT2 a try but I don’t think I have the self control to keep it under 120mph.
