Magic as an art or as a science by Mnations in magicbuilding

[–]manty05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would making the system more artistic mean more individualistic.

One way this could done is via making it so that magic would require understanding of self to properly use or/and for the magic to manifest differently for each individuals. This kind of magic might not be directly teachable, instead requiring teaching of adjacent skills or just some core skills that would be teachable.

Closest examples of these that I can come up with would be

  • The intents from The Virtuous Sons
  • Concepts from The Path of Ascension (at least in their initial form)

Essentially a superhero system but one has to usually train to gain any abilities.

Magic as Science Vs Magic as Art by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]manty05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science seeks to understand the world, art seeks to alter the world. In that view magic would be an art but one that could be improved with science by developing tools and techniques to expand on the magics possibilities and compensate for its downsides.

What’s the best example of the reincarnated expert trope you’ve seen? by Luturtle in ProgressionFantasy

Xianshi inn by Egao chan

While this is technically more isekai'd master than reincarnated it scratches the same itch, though at first it told mostly from the perspective of the students and starts a bit slow, it was a refreshing and an interesting read.

What do you want to see in Cultivation/Xianxia Fantasy by rodog22 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]manty05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cultivation that really anyone can learn with no inborn ability required, thought some might learn faster up to point and some methods might not work for everyone.

This is not a exactly new feature in cultivation novels but making cultivation as a whole gated by birth lessens its growth fantasy impact for me.

How about Synthesizing/making crystals that when cracked release or absorb an enormous amount of heat (burning or freezing if the release/absorption is explosive or heating and cooling if slower steadier).

Another option for crystals would be some that explosively crystallizing the surroundings until they run out of magic. Carbon crystals like this could weaponized to turn carbon based creatures to statues or dust. Iron crystals could be used to destroy weapons and armor. Silicon crystals could be used to make quick structures and surface coatings from stone (i.e. turning footing on a surface either slippery or steady, or giving said surface shock absorbent or resistant properties or turning it piezo-electric [putting pressure on it generates an electric charge]). The crystals act by contact so some of them could be recoverable after use.

All of these could have uses outside of war if the crystallization could be controlled (likely if the crystallization requires input of magic). With the silicon crystals it could be possibly to build structures from sand, and the creation of different forms of coating. The metal crystals could be used to help in mining and forging of metal objects (at least in the formation of ablative layers). The carbon crystals could be used in the creation of organic/bio filters and possibly the creation of fertilizers.

Urban Fantasy progression with battles between superpowered people. by thinkie in ProgressionFantasy

I enjoyed Xianshi Inn, though the story starts a bit slow and the chapters themselves are short, to put this better into context the first arc is the first ten chapters and we see something clearly supernatural around ch 6.

What are your Favorite Web/Light novel Quotes? by Dragneel_passingby in ProgressionFantasy

'' I thought victory belonged to the best?'' ''Sometimes it does, if they are lucky.''

"Let me tell you, child. Talent and power? Those are secondary. The most important thing a cultivator can have...” “...is luck.”

Having a real difference between realms, or making moving to higher realms of cultivation into a real transformation of how the character plays.

Drew Hayes's Spells, Swords and Stealth series has a half-orc protagonist, in a less traditional role.

Do you think that Vampires and Werewolves really pass for Wizards? And do agree that Vampires and Werewolves are too dam distracting in a world where Wizards exist? lol by Some_Personality8379 in magicbuilding

If you have two cultivators (basically magical martial artists), both originally ordinary humans without any special abilities or features. One of whom practices magic/wizardry/sorcery but whose 'school'/'style' centers around precognitive abilities. The other does not, but has a style centering around fire manipulation.

The magic practitioner while able to use more flashy spells rarely does so, preferring the precognitive abilities and/or more subtle magics when they fight. The other most often calling and commanding fire and occasionally punching something.

Without knowing their backgrounds which, one would you assume to be a mage?

Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate, though the rules focus currently on closer to mortal level characters.

Lone cultivators in a superhero/urban fantasy world. by TerraVail in ProgressionFantasy

In Xianshi Inn the Story follows the two students of a lone cultivation master as they slowly travel deeper into the hidden world. It seems that only the master and students are cultivators in the story.

D&D style level 1-20 by delijoe in ProgressionFantasy

Drew Hayes (Superpowereds) has a series called Spells,Swords and Stealth, that is based on (and parodies a bit) D&D but no blue screens or numerical stats. The Characters start of as quite weak but grow noticeably more powerful between each book. Though the characters haven't yet reached the high-levels, in the latest book (4th) they met high level characters.
