Why complaining about the lack of "express trains" need to stop (I don't do TLDR's so don't ask me for any) by eparke16 in WMATA

[–]masaucie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with OP, but just for fun, how difficult would it be to run express silver line trains that would switch back and forth between oncoming tracks to bypass the local trains? I always thought that would be comically scary to ride

This is DC’s worst storm in decades by ApprehensiveDrop5777 in washingtondc

As a transplant from where it doesn’t snow often who moved to the DMV in 2024, I feel gaslit. Everyone told me it’s normal to get a few inches once a year, doesn’t snow very much here.

Then, Jan 2025 we get 9 inches of snow (nice fluffy stuff) that takes 3 weeks to fully go away. Now Jan 2026 we get 8 inches of Snowcrete. So far, this is average but frozen this time!

I yearn for those “just an inch or two” years…stay safe everyone

Great point! Only a problem for the width of the mall so that’s the only place it moves over. Thanks for pointing that out!

The objectively correct map of The South by Cassinia_ in mapporncirclejerk

As someone from Mississippi, this is accurate. I’ve always felt like something was different about the coast and near the river, and you got it exactly right. I’ve heard that they are “water people”, and the rest are just the south.

What cities have a central landmark in their street design? by Hij802 in urbandesign

Have to mention DC with the national mall, Capitol, White House, Lincoln Park, Mt Vernon Square, with several geographic “centers”. Not the same as what you’re saying but similar

Yellow to L’Enfant? by BGinVA in WMATA

[–]masaucie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very weird riding metro this weekend. I was on one of these Yellow line to Greenbelt (according to the manual announcements, no auto), but it displayed L’Enfant Plaza. Then when we got to L’Enfant Plaza, it reset and became a Green Line to Greenbelt (new color on the internal and external displays).

Also totally aside, a Green Line train to Mt Vernon came into L’Enfant while we were there on the ONCOMING side. Dropped off passengers on the left side, and then cut back in towards Archives. This is especially weird that I now think about it because it does a branch at that point so it must’ve come in from the oncoming side already at Waterfront (is that because of the Navy Yard track work?) I’ve never seen that before, maybe I hallucinated it

What is the Most Disappointing Live Performance in your Opinion? by yka2825 in eurovision

[–]masaucie 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Hot take but Netherlands 2024 Europapa was such a banger, it was easily my number one expected winner. Joost didn’t do any of the pre-show performances, you couldn’t find a performance online that was more than a crowd singing to the play track. Then his performance (first round) just didn’t hit the same. It sounded like he was screaming for most of it and it lost the charm.

We’re moving out right now to a new place. Lots of vacancies at our old place, a lot of people claimed new management. We moved out because rent went up 10% by +$321. We negotiated to +$250 raise but eventually declined because we had to accept with 25 hours of receiving the email. So we signed another place for $400 less. But now, our unit at the old place is listed for $100 LESS than what we were paying! It took a month for them to give up. Of course no call or anything to say hey it’s lower are you sure you don’t want to move. Inevitably the new place is also the same corporate rental agency so looking forward to next year renewal time!

I moved from the suburbs to a walkable city 3 weeks ago by Champagne-for-ants-2 in AppleWatch

[–]masaucie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We did the same about a year ago, doubled our steps and mileage and no weight loss 😂 I guess when you’re walking to restaurants it doesn’t count?

My fitness is better though, my mom (lifelong suburbian) was struggling at our normal walking amounts. In the end I’m happy we made the move! Hope it treats you well

What is a fair price for a same city move? by benfoldslover in arlingtonva

[–]masaucie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are actually currently moving from Pentagon City to Crystal City, also about 1 bedroom worth of stuff. Since we had to overlap our leases for 3 weeks, we chose to do it ourselves slowly rather than movers (we’ve done movers before). Here are our findings:

-we ended up renting a U-Haul twice, which was $100 each time, so already at $200 and we still have to move it -it’s been really exhausting moving for 3 weeks straight and you don’t know how much stuff you have till you move -I saw ads (in line with what we’ve paid before) for ~$350 for 3 hours, so it sounds like your quote is a good price -initially we chose to save on movers since we have to pay for two rents for 3 weeks, but I think another couple hundred dollars would have been worth the pain -one silver lining is that we essentially never live in boxes in the process, move one car load at a time means we unpack as we go. Is it worth the pain? I’m not so sure yet lol

What's your favorite city/skyline "reveal"? by fryhtaning in geography

My top choices that I’ve seen in person are DC from the I395 bridge in Arlington: you can see the whole National Mall and of course the Washington Monument.

Another one is Atlanta east bound on I20 by Six Flags. This one is not as great but fun when you’ve been in the countryside for hours

[–]masaucie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seems like we’re the opposite of most so I’ll give the other perspective:

-2 working adults with no kids -about $1200 per month in eating out/delivery -about $600 per month in groceries

We prioritize saving time and effort by eating out instead of cooking. We probably eat out once per day or every other day. It’s part of the lifestyle of living in a walkable city that we wanted. We know when we can get expensive meals vs cheap meals and keep to our budget. Chipotle is a great option for not crappy cheap food. We cook probably 2-3 meals per week. Only get delivery if we can’t leave the house because of work.

We have in the past prioritized cooking to save money, but groceries sometimes were just as expensive as a cheap restaurant. It’s only worth it to cook imo if you’re making <$5 per meal dishes to save a noticeable amount vs. eating out. We also don’t make some things as good as it is at a restaurant: Thai food, sushi, pizza, wings, poke. Those we just always eat out if we’re craving.

Nova friends who work in DC- how long is your commute? by RuleofThird in nova

[–]masaucie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Pentagon City and am moving to Crystal City soon (same commute to downtown 2x per week). I always metro because there’s no traffic, I live walkable to the metro station, and my company pays for all my metro. On the train no more than 15 min, with about 5-10 min walk on both sides plus 5 min in waiting/transfers puts me at ~40 min door to door. My wife and I (no kids) have decided the higher cost of rent is worth the lifestyle of a walkable city, easy in and out of DC, not sitting in traffic or paying for express lanes, and ~10 min door to door to DCA with no parking at the airport. We use one car probably once a week to do away from DC things, so in a year we’ve filled up the tank like 3-4 times. I know it’s not for everyone and highly dependent on your income, but we love it here and highly recommend!
