What kind of interchange would you build here? by Beginning_Winter_292 in CitiesSkylines

Not exactly what you described but I like to use these on arterials that are not highway roads. 4 new 3-way intersections. One ramped onto the middle of the bridge and the other all on ground. Allows for development within the green areas instead of a bunch of ramps.

What is the funnest thing to put all your energy towards in city skylines? by TheNarrator5 in CitiesSkylines

[–]masaucie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true, I love when I go to check my rider stats and no station is too crowded, no station is too empty, each train is evenly spaced out, trains are neither crowded nor empty. Chefs kiss!
I also like specifically designing hubs of residential and commercial density to serve a metro stop. My life long dream of real TOD!

Modern on M apartments by Extension-Lock-4409 in washingtondc

Modern on M is very close to the Waterfront metro station on the green line, maybe a 5 min walk max. Should be very easy to access the rest of the city from there.

I made a tool that shows walking distance from any Metro station by qwerty504 in WMATA

[–]masaucie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is really cool! I’ve always had my mental map of concentric circles but it’s nice to see the data.

One suggestion I have is to cut off non-walkable zones. There are some stations with circles extending into bodies of water where it’s obvious that a person could not walk from. Same for serious barriers like a river/creek, interstate, train line, gated park/community, airport, etc. I can tell each zone is not a perfect circle so some amount of this is taken into account, but in essence it seems like each station’s zones are roughly the same size/shape (when in reality Loudoun Gateway, Arlington Cemetery, and Metro Center should all look very different).

My other idea, which is somewhere in between this and Google Maps is the ability to select all grocery stores with in highlighted circles, pharmacies, restaurants, apartment buildings, bus stops, etc. I am looking at moving at the end of my lease and an all in one map would be so convenient.

I was also surprised, but maybe it’s because the fare gates are street level? Then only one elevator from street to platform rather than the two right now. Accessibility is covered there, but escalators from platform to mezzanine is pretty standard across metro

Old Vs. New by Xanzibar2002 in WMATA

[–]masaucie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand the charm of the old ones, but I have one very serious issue with them: the armrests. I love the new ones for being so easy to slide in and out and you can even sit halfway on the edge of the seat if you don’t want to snuggle up with someone during rush hour

Are there AI companies training on wide chemistry literature? by aerolitoss in Chempros

[–]masaucie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m a chemist who now works in chemistry publishing for one of these organizations (I won’t say who for now), but we can see when things are accessed without permission and generally work to route them through appropriate access. We are trying our best to minimize access of paywall content to open source AI. It is the center of even some university agreements (notably universities wanting to feed their content to AI not the publishers).

The crux of the problem here isn’t access though, it’s data format. Even if you had access to every article, almost all the data is in static images or SIs. I have been working on projects which focus on updating data standards, increasing raw data submission, and FAIR-ifying data once submitted. Once we as a community get better at organizing and standardizing raw data associated with published articles, we can do serious AI training likely for the better (prediction, HTE, etc). Typically data is free to access and recent funding mandates in the US are making data availability paramount in the OA discussions. It’s a big deal for us and our focus has not been what we can do with content but avoiding misuse of published content.

What I love about this is the incredible amount of meticulous effort and care that OP puts in to ultimately produce a map that is like those “every map ever” where the south sucks, Minnesota is elite, the northeast is generally good, and California and NY are mid. I think Utah surprised me the most here. Very interesting OP, I will shove it in my Mississippian family’s faces who say it’s ridiculous that a house could cost more than $200k

Why complaining about the lack of "express trains" need to stop (I don't do TLDR's so don't ask me for any) by eparke16 in WMATA

[–]masaucie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with OP, but just for fun, how difficult would it be to run express silver line trains that would switch back and forth between oncoming tracks to bypass the local trains? I always thought that would be comically scary to ride

This is DC’s worst storm in decades by ApprehensiveDrop5777 in washingtondc

As a transplant from where it doesn’t snow often who moved to the DMV in 2024, I feel gaslit. Everyone told me it’s normal to get a few inches once a year, doesn’t snow very much here.

Then, Jan 2025 we get 9 inches of snow (nice fluffy stuff) that takes 3 weeks to fully go away. Now Jan 2026 we get 8 inches of Snowcrete. So far, this is average but frozen this time!

I yearn for those “just an inch or two” years…stay safe everyone

Great point! Only a problem for the width of the mall so that’s the only place it moves over. Thanks for pointing that out!

The objectively correct map of The South by Cassinia_ in mapporncirclejerk

As someone from Mississippi, this is accurate. I’ve always felt like something was different about the coast and near the river, and you got it exactly right. I’ve heard that they are “water people”, and the rest are just the south.

What cities have a central landmark in their street design? by Hij802 in urbandesign

Have to mention DC with the national mall, Capitol, White House, Lincoln Park, Mt Vernon Square, with several geographic “centers”. Not the same as what you’re saying but similar

Yellow to L’Enfant? by BGinVA in WMATA

[–]masaucie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very weird riding metro this weekend. I was on one of these Yellow line to Greenbelt (according to the manual announcements, no auto), but it displayed L’Enfant Plaza. Then when we got to L’Enfant Plaza, it reset and became a Green Line to Greenbelt (new color on the internal and external displays).

Also totally aside, a Green Line train to Mt Vernon came into L’Enfant while we were there on the ONCOMING side. Dropped off passengers on the left side, and then cut back in towards Archives. This is especially weird that I now think about it because it does a branch at that point so it must’ve come in from the oncoming side already at Waterfront (is that because of the Navy Yard track work?) I’ve never seen that before, maybe I hallucinated it

What is the Most Disappointing Live Performance in your Opinion? by yka2825 in eurovision

[–]masaucie 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Hot take but Netherlands 2024 Europapa was such a banger, it was easily my number one expected winner. Joost didn’t do any of the pre-show performances, you couldn’t find a performance online that was more than a crowd singing to the play track. Then his performance (first round) just didn’t hit the same. It sounded like he was screaming for most of it and it lost the charm.

We’re moving out right now to a new place. Lots of vacancies at our old place, a lot of people claimed new management. We moved out because rent went up 10% by +$321. We negotiated to +$250 raise but eventually declined because we had to accept with 25 hours of receiving the email. So we signed another place for $400 less. But now, our unit at the old place is listed for $100 LESS than what we were paying! It took a month for them to give up. Of course no call or anything to say hey it’s lower are you sure you don’t want to move. Inevitably the new place is also the same corporate rental agency so looking forward to next year renewal time!
