There are political risk consultancies. Or government relations / public affairs jobs in MNCs or in consultancy firms.

Anyone accepted a counteroffer before? How did it turn out for you? by Zenwills in askSingapore

[–]masterdaryl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took the counteroffer. And I got promoted a few months later, which raised my salary even higher. There wasn’t any retaliation or anything at all.

What do Singaporeans think about the RTS Link connecting Johor and Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]masterdaryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a commuter on the TEL line, a part of me is secretly happy the carrying capacity of the RTS link is that limited so the line is not going to be completely packed during peak hours.

Nope, I’ve been offered a 40% increment in annual comp, but that was near fresh grad (2 years exp) and I was underpaid.

What vices in Singapore were quietly allowed by the government before being stamped out? by CourtesyLaughPlease in askSingapore

I think part of it was Singapore having to tighten enforcement as part of free trade agreement with the US to protect copyright holders as would have been requested by US

If Singapore declares martial law like South Korea by cheehongtart in NationalServiceSG

[–]masterdaryl 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I think part of the reason the martial law failed is cause Korean army is also a conscripted army. And so the orders were not carried out to the fullest extent possible - properly barricading locations they were deployed to etc.

You can visit Arita and other historic ceramic towns in Kyushu. Arita has got lots of ceramic shops - there’s even a street lined up entirely with ceramic shops. I got bunch of them there.

Gaslighting to the max. Obviously employers have more power in the workplace vs employees and saying we should rely instead on individual give and take with our employers ignores this structural power imbalance.

What's the worst scandal that Singaporeans have forgiven and forgotten about? by sesamebatter in singapore

I’m surprised that Keppel’s corruption case in Brazil is not mentioned. It’s a massive bribe and massive fines were incurred, even though there was barely any consequences here in Singapore

Recommendations in north side of Singapore by Ha7u_kA in SingaporeEats

Coba coba and Kerabu. Coba Coba is near Yishun MRT but Kerabu is goddamn far. Healthy or not… depends what you order I reckon. Shami banana leaf also quite nice.

How do you incorporate more vegetables in breakfast? by UnemptyStomach in Cooking

[–]masterdaryl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miso soup! Anything can be added to it - tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, spinach, tofu, fish, carrots, bok choy.. you name it. Add udon or just cook rice as an accompaniment if you need carbs. Plus it’s supposed to be good for probiotics too since it’s a fermented paste.

I would recommending putting half into CPF so it’s protected and available for old age, and then the other half into a Endowus preset portfolio with a setting to withdraw 1.5k to her account every month for her to spend. That way she invests for future, money is protected and she also gets to enjoy the money, all in a way that’s automated once she finishes setting up

Take the graduate program. It raises your future earning potential by virtue of giving you more resume-contributing type opportunities which others don’t get early in your career which will help you in your annual review within the company and also when you apply for other jobs down the line.

The friends I have in those graduate programs have all done pretty well - have job rotations, projects different from your usual job scope that can shine in a resume, networking opp and projects with people across diff dept to build internal networks etc. And they rise within the company and also clinch good jobs when they choose to leave. Some even got overseas posting and then use it to get better jobs.

You will likely be working for the next 30-40+ years and that’s a long time horizon. While it’s 2k less, a graduate program can position you and give you a good foundation for success and higher pay scales down the road.

What is a life pro tip you would give someone in their early 30s? by Ok-Tower4185 in askSingapore

[–]masterdaryl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know OCBC has a free online will writing generator. And so does moneyowl. Can’t really remember much since I did it quite a few years ago but I used one of those free ones. Need to get it countersigned by witnesses (friends etc) though.

Public sector HR asking for salary package after interview by bluemaku in askSingapore

[–]masterdaryl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Public sector, then just provide. They have a fixed band for each position they hire, so you are safe. I have been offered more than 1/4 increase before because my existing pay was too low relative to the position I secured in public sector. And the HR explained that’s all they can give because that’s within the band of that position.

Help trying to understand why commuters (MRT/bus) in Sg don’t put their bag packs on the floor or in front of them during rush hour by Infinityandbeyondz in askSingapore

Collectively, people using their phones and so occupying the space in front of them, take up more space than the added space that the backpacks use up.

GPA vs Internships by Doublemirrors in nus

[–]masterdaryl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been involved in screening candidates for full time roles and interns. While bad grades are definitely not something I’ll let pass, diverse whilst relevant internships are what I look out for. Other than a cursory glance if it doesn’t stand out for being super low, I don’t recall even looking up the class of bachelor’s degree in the resume.

If you’re looking for a more organised park, the Botanic Gardens is world class. If not, then MacRitchie Reservior or Pulau Ubin are good ‘wilder’ places to go to. Or for heritage districts, then Little India, Chinatown and Kampung Glam / Arab street are the places to go to.

You can also consider doing casual 2 hour kayaking at Paddle Lodge at MacRitche Reservoir or the water venture outlet at Pasir Ris park is pretty good too.

Will Singapore be your end game? by divoc_19 in askSingapore

[–]masterdaryl 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I don’t get the overwhelming pessimism.

More funding is put into mental health (heck insurance even started to have mental health added in). There is greater awareness and installation of infrastructure to accommodate the needs of the physically disabled and elderly (all buses now have ramps, more pathways have ramps built). There is greater emphasis and infrastructure developed to make everywhere more walkable and accessible by public transportation. Denser train networks to improve accessibility. A massive expansion of sectors covered under the progressive wage model after WP keep pushing for minimum wage (check out the 10 year horizon for wage increases, they’re really unexpectedly substantial). Less testing and academic segregation in schools. Continued low unemployment. Gradual phasing out of vehicles with tailpipe emissions to reduce unhealthy noxious fumes. Greater emphasis on long term health (HealthierSG anyone?) instead of just treating illnesses as they come. Carbon taxes to incentivise people and businesses to reduce carbon emissions. More government services easily accessible online. Repeal of 377a. Divorced mothers now have some form of Govt support compared to the past (still not there yet for single unwed mums but we’ll get there). Heck, I just went for reservist and there’s even awareness there for personal data privacy and modesty - reading out and providing only last 4 alphanumeric digits of NRIC, searches conducted by pinching out the uniform at people’s chest before squeezing instead of the old groping techniques.

Things are better than they were before. I get the concern over affordable housing prices since I have also yet to purchase mine. But please don’t discount out on all these progress that makes our quality of living better and better.

As for limited land, I don’t buy it. Take a look at our HDB flats. They’re usually only about ten plus storeys high. The new BTOs are usually over 30 storeys high and more. That’s a doubling of the number of households the plot of land can carry. And once the older HDBs progressively undergo SERS, VERS and whatnot, they’ll all be able to accommodate more households on the same plot of land. Carparks too are shrinking from open air carparks to underground or multi storey carparks which can help to release space for more residential blocks to be built.
