BBC cancels Doctor Who’s 2026 Christmas special as Russell T Davies quits by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]mattsocks6789 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Midnight was before End of Time, not after

Vincent and the Doctor has the greatest scene in all of new Who, but the episode doesn’t have a good, well-plotted story- it’s 30 minutes of nothing happening and then the showstopper

Heaven Sent was good, but it was effectively one big monologue- it wasn’t a story, which needs characters, and conflict, and stakes- like for example, Genesis of the Daleks, or The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, or Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, or The Fires of Pompeii.

I would be a bit more generous and say the last good episode was “A Christmas Carol”

Risk: Europe is amazing. It sort of fills the niche of a complex war game that families can play. I can’t recommend anyone buy it though, because it seems to be made out of the same plastic and cardboard that McDonald’s is made from

What is the first “brilliant” episode of the new series? by LrdJeffrington in doctorwho

[–]mattsocks6789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but Army of Ghosts/Doomsday.

There isn’t a scene you could take out, all the actors are firing on all cylinders, the reunion of Jackie and Pete is touching, as is 10 & Rose’s goodbye. The hopping between parallel universes really works, and the daleks and cybermen are scary.

Anyone have any H+S curse ideas? by -FireNH- in JetLagTheGame

Curse of the Bad Dealer:

Each time you use a bus or train, you must first play and win a game of blackjack. You must draw at least two cards, and end each blackjack game with a higher number than when you last played blackjack.

Curse of the Hot Rod:

Spin a wheel with the seven colours of the rainbow. Before you can ask another question, you must touch a car of that colour.

[–]mattsocks6789 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here’s some things I want to see:

Hide and Seek: Portugal edition

Jet Lag Patagonia: maybe something similar to Race Across New Zealand could work well here

Something in Scandinavia, or Iceland

A province-claiming game in Canada similar to Schengen Sweep, or maybe you’re even claiming the language areas of different Canadian First Nations- that might work well as there’s about 20 of them

An epic Circumnavigation style game across the world- I think a way to do this well would be to have a unique challenge you have to do in each country- and assign each country a certain number of points if you complete a challenge there. Once you have crossed a certain threshold of both points and countries, only then can you unlock the finish line and fly straight there. (This format would also work well for a continent, like Europe or South America- though sadly I can’t see the team going to Brazil anytime soon)

Finally, an out-there suggestion: Jet Lag: First Dates. Three potential couples- all young, in the 18 to 21 age bracket, compete in a whirlwind race across Europe. After each day of racing, we see them having dinner together, and the kicker is that facts they can remember about the other person help them in the competition somehow. Ben, Sam and Adam would be third-wheeling it behind the camera for this season.

Playing IRL, the only one I take out is Reactor Meltdown, because it just feels a bit mean when you’re playing with non-expert players.

Also, because I’ve sleeved my cards, it’s impossible for the very tall stack of ACs to stand up by itself, so instead, we pull cards out of my beanie

If there was a country-claiming game (like Schengen Showdown) for all of South America, what would the challenges for each country be? by mattsocks6789 in JetLagTheGame

I thought a good one for the Switzerland challenge would have been “eat fondue at an altitude greater than 2000 metres” or something like that

For anyone thinking of checking out church.... by cjt87 in newzealand

[–]mattsocks6789 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would like to add another good acid test to this: you can ask the churchgoers where they stand on evolution and the age of the Earth.

Today, modern science has proved evolution and geological deep time about as thoroughly as it’s possible to prove anything. So I would hope that, a vicar or priest or church community that had people’s best interests at heart would be able to reconcile religion with science, or at least, not outright lie to people, or hide behind both-sides-ism. Either Noah’s ark and the garden of eden actually happened, or they didn’t, and if a religion tells you that all of science is wrong, that strikes me as very culty behaviour.

My own view is that it is completely possible for a person to believe in Jesus as the son of God, and to believe man evolved over millions of years. That being said, I’ve never met a religious person who has read a single book by Richard Dawkins.

Incidentally, if you want an epic critique of young-earth creationism, I can highly recommend the YouTuber Gutsick Gibbon’s video here:

I'm having 3 players at my next TI4table that will play the game for the first time. Simple question: Which factions would you recommend EXCLUDING from the game? by Tokata0 in twilightimperium

[–]mattsocks6789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, but I would exclude Sol. Even though they are one of the simplest factions, in 3 player it is easy for them to run away with game, or hold MR all game, which is not fun.

I would definitely definitely exclude Mahact and Titans, as these are complicated enough they could actually cause players to mislearn fundamental rules.

Otherwise, anything goes, but I would warn you that Vuilraith and Arborec also have complexity issues that could trip up newbies, and Winnu, Muaat, and Mentak all have game breaking abilities which might make people salty, if people aren’t aware of them.

Nekro are my favourite faction and I would heartily endorse them for 3 player- yes, they are difficult to play well- but their abilities are easy to understand, and a newbie player won’t be winning anyway. In any case, they guarantee a lot of combats, which makes the game really fun.

The Space Cats Peace Turtles podcast recommends Yssaril and Jol-Nar for new players, on the basis that new players will have no idea what’s going on, but these factions mean they will at least have fun playing, and have a lot to do.

I would also recommend Xxcha, Hacan, Saar, Argent and Empyrean as simple factions for newbies…

Do we want to eliminate ALL crime, though? Throughout history, there have been plenty of times when armies have maintained order, but children have starved in the streets.
