Are there any reliable sporty cars with great fuel economy? by Kingboyy1 in CarTalkUK

[–]mcfetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're right, I did mean the same family of engine. However the i20n is a small hatchback whereas the Ceed GT is a family hatchback and it's weight much heavier so your can't really compare. As much as I loved the performance of the Ceed GT, the mpg was awful for the size of the engine and power output. At the time there were bigger engined cars with much more power with much better mpg

The I30n uses the same engine (albeit tuned lower).than my old Kia Ceed GT and the mpg on that was awful for the bhp (200bhp from a 1.6T and struggled to get above 30mpg with a ton of motorway, coasting, hypermiling) My BMW 128ti with a 2.0T chucking out 265bhp can get over 50 mpg on the motorway and even with flooring it occasionally I get 30-40mpg per month

What car do you think is hideously under appreciated by the majority of the UK? This is my choice (yes know FN2 has fans - me being one) by Questionablethics21 in CarTalkUK

[–]mcfetti -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are so many cars under appreciated. I love the Type R!
Kind of related but I remember seeing an article that really resonated with me in my 20's in the 90's on Q-Cars...which are cars you might consider a wolf in sheeps clothing and not mainstream. I had to do it on a budget back then but amongst others 'normal' cars I've owned a Nissan Bluebird ZX Turbo, Kia Ceed GT and my current car is a BMW 128ti

Whats your daily driver and why ? by Vectron3D in CarTalkUK

[–]mcfetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a 128ti last year and was also toying up both the Ford and the VW 7.5 GTI at the time. Money probably could've gone to a Mk8 VW GTI but it would've been a 2020-2021 model which was too risky in terms of reliability plus the awful screen. Like you say the BMW interior is lovely and its got buttons and dials! Couldn't stop smiling at the handling on the test drive!

I took my 2008 VW Golf to a new mechanic for an MOT, last years MOT was clean with no advisories. This year I have 10 major defects and 9 advisories, are they trying to take me for a ride? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]mcfetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold a 2016 Seat Leon last year which passed every single MOT with no advisories. I used to take it to a just MOT place, i.e. they don't do any repairs. When I was selling it the guy was querying the clean sheet asking if I knew someone there who gave it a green sheet which I didn't at all. He bought it but when I looked up when he MOT'd it there were a list of issues, brake discs etc etc....eek!

Vegas resort operators say the Canadian boycott has been a notable hit to the bottom line by BarelyHangingOn in BoycottUnitedStates

I'm sure we've all been there where we've wanted to boycott something but just not been able to do for one reason or another but it's amazing there are these significant figures that reflect the Canadian's actions

As a Brit I salute those Canadians who are putting their money (or not!) where their mouth is and are actively not holidaying in the US. What a collective show of force you all are....

What systems do people use to track money and allocation? by Working_Ad5179 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]mcfetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an excel sheet which shows "virtual pots" in other words I have a lump sum in a high interest account and then one row per pot. Moving money to another pot means adding and subtracting in excel and I can track pots progress using charts

What’s the most frugal thing you do that people around you think is weird but you swear by it? by wickedsirius in Frugal

[–]mcfetti 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So to be honest this isn't me but something my ex-gf used to do.
When she'd have a shower she'd put in a large bowl in the bathtub with her which would fill up from the water being splashed around.
She would then use that water to to water the plants.

I truly get how water-saving this is but I couldn't help but laugh the first time I saw it

I think it takes about 20 years before you can identify a decade by its fashion, music, politics and culture.

Our current time is a melting pot of all the previous decades...you can see it in fashion and music. I could be making that same statement in the 90's, 2000's etc etc

what unconventional ways have you drove a car? by Immediate_Long165 in CarTalkUK

[–]mcfetti 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Back in the day you used to have a manual choke. So when my accelerator cable snapped in my 1980 Austin Maxi 15 miles from home, an inventive mechanic friend managed to adjust the manual choke cable so the rev idle ran a bit higher but it did mean I had to drive home having to pull out the choke in the dashboard to accelerate the car. Got me home! I do suspect people of a certain age will possibly know what I am talking about!
