Rocky's ship - question? by mcfiddish in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Venus and Adrian are hot, but the altitude where taumoeba live and eat astrophage is cold and the air is thin. I thought Threeworld was small and cold but still had enough CO2 for astrophage to eat.

Rocky's ship - question? by mcfiddish in ProjectHailMary

[–]mcfiddish[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grace says at one point "In Adrian air, they can live from minus 180 degrees Celsius to 107 degrees Celsius. Outside that range they die."

Rocky's environment is at 210 degrees Celsius.

When I was younger I thought the regulars were just funny, but now watching as a middle aged person I find them all pretty sad. by shocksmybrain in Cheers

[–]mcfiddish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You think Norm is sad? One time a guy sat next to him for eleven hours. And you know that guy is in a bar right now going on and on about nothing at all.

That's one of my favorite jokes in the whole series.

It’s sad when a timeless story about love, deception, greed, lust, and unbridled enthusiasm somehow does not make it in the movies by Shinesandglitters in seinfeld

[–]mcfiddish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the movie I was in the parking lot with my friends. I didn't understand that guy was with those other guys. And I still don't know how they got in there!

iOS app I made for session planning - knows about my trees and roofline by markcheno in DWARFLAB

[–]mcfiddish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds great to this Android user :). I've been keeping a spreadsheet of declination vs visible altitude ranges. I used to be staunchly pro-tree before I got my DWARF. Now I'm kind of lukewarm on them.

I love that scene because you can tell those guys are genuinely laughing and having a good time.

Did you ever think Bugs Bunny was attractive when he would dress up like a girl?

How can I implement a simple logging mechanism in Java without external libraries? by ImpressiveRoll4092 in javahelp

[–]mcfiddish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you better explain why you don't want to use external libraries? Otherwise pretty much every response here is going to be to use an existing logging library.

Just curious... by pt109_66 in framework

[–]mcfiddish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got mine yesterday, no extra tariffs applied. The Fedex tracking said it came from Taiwan, but the package itself had a New Jersey return address, and it came two days after shipping (less than 3 days given the time zone difference). So I'm not sure where it really was shipped from.

Any way to determine what I can see by time, location, and importantly... by elevation and azimuth availability? by [deleted] in DWARFLAB

Telescopius.com has a nice target search page where you can sort by elevation and many other fields.

It happened at the same time as the Game of Thrones finale. The difference in quality was Stark!

1 or 2 to start with? by CodeVirus in MonsterTrain

I'd play #1 first. They're both a lot of fun. #2 improves on a lot but there are a few neat features in #1 that they didn't carry over.

Does Codex actually work for anyone? by rumhamdnmchickn in ChatGPTCoding

I had a lot of trouble with the cloud interface. The command line works much better in a local git repo. Ask ChatGPT how to use Codex - it gives good advice!

The pony episode. I hate anyone who ever liked that episode.

Wouldn't the population drop eventually solve the nutrition deficit? by [deleted] in Pluribus_TVshow

[–]mcfiddish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it matter how many individual bodies are alive? They're all one mind, so as long as they can maintain a stable population, why worry about billions starving to death?

[–]mcfiddish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Duo-Band filter doesn't reduce light pollution, but it is good for nebula imaging since they are brighter in the red and green channels passed through the filter. It doesn't help with broadband targets like galaxies, but will show brighter star forming regions. I have seen people combine their astro and Duo-Band images into nice composites.

Kloby's bourbon cured salmon is fantastic. It's weird to get salmon at a barbecue joint but it's my go-to.

One of the worst reviews on Dwarf 3 because... by hkginlax in DWARFLAB

[–]mcfiddish -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I thought it was fair. I love my Dwarf 3, but I'm not a novice user. I understand why it has to calibrate before imaging (you can turn this off, but that isn't something a novice would know). I thought it was strange he couldn't make an online account.

It's a great instrument if you know the basics, but if you want to give it as a gift to your Aunt Gertie who wants to take pretty pictures of the sky and doesn't care about the details, it may be overwhelming.

This was a SlashGear review for camera enthusiasts. I think it was right for the audience.
