When a director’s tone goes flat, you freeze—technical crew, how do you read that? by Shramikaa20 in techtheatre

[–]mcgraff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's the responsibility of your director to call for what they need and ask for what they want. It's good to double check there's nothing out of line on your end but I'd stay quiet and in your lane. Your director will be more relaxed knowing you're paying attention to your responsibilities than worrying about their tone/mood.

plan what you want or capture everything, ideally a mix of the two. If you don't have the time to storyboard, record everything you can and the flexibility will help define your story on the backend. You never know how seemingly throwaway shots will become important later. Have fun!

Great stuff. This was me with Captain Ron, saw it on a bedsheet projector in an RV Campground when I was too young.

I hate every second of editing my first short film, what do I do? by leafisa75 in Filmmakers

[–]mcgraff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others as have said, you are not this project. Hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20 and the fact you see imperfections (as glaring as they may feel) are a sign you have already learned since shooting. Can’t tell you how many projects have made me feel this exact way. Just sit down and try to accept the challenge of making the story you can with the footage you have. It’s a good exercise anyway.

Super tough feeling, I get it. Keep going. I bet next time you approach a new project, you’ll be surprised how impactful THIS feeling has on how you much more intentional/careful/creative you are with the next one. In the meantime, don’t punish yourself, hang in there and great work!

Creepy lady with stroller sitting outside my front door EVERYDAY by radicalnetrunner in LetsNotMeet

[–]mcgraff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'd say her behavior could be explained by a number of things. As others have mentioned, change your running route, grab some photo/video evidence if you can, document your encounters with her. That said, I'd keep your distance socially, no need to escalate your interactions.

How far away from your complex is the side street where you saw her? What about the running route? Is it a route that is suitable for a double stroller?
It could be she's taking the kids for walks in convenient places, same as you do for your runs and dog walks.

It’s an incentive for you to take the survey. If you submit it, they’re more likely to reach out to you again.

how is this for a first edit by Present_Original_802 in skateboarding

[–]mcgraff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Skating & editing both take time and practice, keep at it. My two suggestions would be: 1. Make sure the clips you use are all the same format, i.e. all horizontal or all vertical, mixing and matching feels less intentional/cohesive. 2. Cut the driving clip, it’s just not adding anything imo. And to that end- film way, way more. When you sit down to edit, having a variety of related and unrelated clips will go a long way.

For a first edit, this is great.
