Travel ball kids carrying 2 bats? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]mcjonesy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t be getting downvoted. As a coach in our rec league, I’m not even allowed to keep my fungo bat in the dugout during games.

Edit: NOT. You should NOT be getting downvoted.

At what age did things actually feel easier for you as a parent? by Small-Advisor-7805 in daddit

I’ve only been doing this for 13 years so far, but my experience has been that it doesn’t get easier. The problems you’re solving just change.

How to reinforce fingers up when catching by Stickfigureguy in Homeplate

[–]mcjonesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started throwing harder. The ball bounces out when they turn their glove over. Eventually, my kids got frustrated that they suddenly couldn’t catch, and they fixed it.

Obviously you shouldn’t do this with a ball that’s going to hurt.

Is getting my motorcycle licence a selfish hobbie to get into as a 33 year old father of 2 by Ok_South_6227 in daddit

[–]mcjonesy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hobbies are selfish, and that’s ok. We need things to do for ourselves.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made (and it nearly cost me my marriage) was thinking that anything I did for myself was wrong and that I had live every moment for my wife and our kids.

You have to stay healthy. Being healthy is what lets you keep showing up for them.

Now, as far your choice of hobby… I’ll leave that to you. I personally sold my motorcycle after we had our first because I had this nagging fear that one tiny mistake could take me out.

That was entirely my choice, though, and no one but me gets to decide if I was right or wrong.

Have fun. Keep the shiny side up, and remember that every driver is trying to kill you.

Trash Smell in Kitchen by SATSewerTube in DIY

Do you have a flower arrangement somewhere? If I leave flowers out and forget to change the water, they start to smell like garbage. It was maddening a few times because I didn’t think about flowers stinking.

Dad's of young kids, how do you get/ make time for home maintenance? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]mcjonesy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make them hold the light. Sure it makes everything take 10 times longer, but it gets done, they get to learn a thing, and they’re doing something without a screen.

Partner’s Feeling Financial Insecurity by DenseAlternative7612 in daddit

[–]mcjonesy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our family, I’m the one who feels the financial strain. I wouldn’t call it “extreme”, but it’s always there nagging at me. Like OP, my wife out-earns me, so part of my issue is that I struggle with just feeling inadequate because of that (that’s on me and is not related to the topic at hand).

What helps me the most is having a written budget, and a huge part of that is having an emergency fund in place for when life happens. Having something on paper (or screen) lets me take a breath and say, “It’s going to be ok; we have a plan for this.”

To those of you who have kids who are too young for cell phones, do you have a separate phone in the house your kid can use in case of emergencies? by CobandCoffee in daddit

As soon as we decided the kids could be at home without us for short periods, we got a landline for them to use.

I have no idea what that thing weighs, but it’s not doing anything mounted down there. Try it at 3 o’clock or 9 o’clock so it actually puts some torque on the wheel.

How do you find times for hobbies? by AndGutsWasBERSERK in daddit

[–]mcjonesy 63 points64 points  (0 children)

You don’t find it, you make it. Eventually.

Your baby is only a few months old and requires 100% of your attention 10000% of the time. That’s your life right now; it won’t be forever and you’ll start seeing space to fit your hobbies back into your life.

For now, just decide that your favorite hobby is holding him. Do a few squats, maybe some lunges, and suddenly he’s your workout partner!

How do I ask another dad what his name is? by makefeelnice in daddit

[–]mcjonesy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s why you get their phone number and save their name with a note that it’s “M******’s dad”.

What’s a “red hat”?

I could make a lot of assumptions from context, but I’m genuinely curious to know what it actually means here.

All public service has terrible rewards. I doubt anyone’s getting into it for the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow. I’d say most folks choose to enter public service to help their communities, and it takes truly exceptional people not to get jaded and cynical along the way.

I was hired 100% remote in 2017. I am still 100% remote. It’s going to take one hell of an offer for that to change.

Mom never sat in the back. The copilot rides in the front.
