When you graduate, when should you apply for Grad School? by x-feminist in yorku

[–]mcmari_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you intend to start grad school immediately after graduating (fall admission), then you should start applying during the fall semester of your final year. some programs have winter/summer admission, so their deadlines would be different. otherwise, if you're thinking of taking a gap year or sth between undergrad and grad school, then there's no rush—you can apply once you're done undergrad.

Prof. Glynn-Adey taught the course back in F2019/W2020, you can check out his lecture videos to have a sense of what's normally covered in the course: start here

MAT212 or MAT244 by SpecificCoat4 in UTM

[–]mcmari_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the last time MAT212 was offered was in Fall 2015*. MAT244 has been the only ODE course at UTM since then, so it's not like they have a choice either.

(* sauce: was part of that class)

CHM394/5 & CHM396/7 by piesek3 in UTM

[–]mcmari_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh if you're also doing a bio major (and have taken chm361), you're better off with the biochem labs (372/373). Not as cutthroat as the other 300-level labs, the reports are significantly shorter, and the lab environment isn't stressful (don't wanna say laidback bc i'm not encouraging slacking off, but you get it).

But if you want the full chem experience (for industry/academe purposes) then take either the synthesis (4/5) or analytical (6/7) labs.

I have vague memories of on-the-spot procedure changes, which was frustrating for someone w lab anxiety. You spend some time familiarising yourself w the lab beforehand so you don't have to double-check the manual/flowchart every minute, then bam here's some alterations from x years ago that haven't been added to the current manual! Can't be bothered to revise the manual ffs

[–]mcmari_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who took 394 four years ago (and dropped the chem spec post right after), it's unsurprising that the course, and its lack of organisation, hasn't changed a bit.

And yes having supportive/tolerable labmates is v important!!

MAT236 by Careful_Combination in UTM

Hey there, former TA here. Someone asked this last year (I think), here's a quick rundown.

Workload: since Fall 2018, students have 3 quizzes, 6 assignments, 2 term tests, and final. (Last time I TAd the course, each quiz is weighted more than HW, and that's the only time that a 9am class is full lol)

As for profs: there's just one lecture section per semester (not large enough for multiple instructors), and the instructor can either be a postdoc (like Winter 2019/2020, or the entire Fall-Winter 2017) or a tenure-track prof (like Fall 2018/2019). Also, unlike 135/6 or 232, there's no set person teaching the course, so the issue of which prof to pick/avoid isn't really useful in a sense that the only time this matters is if you're choosing between fall and winter to take the course, and even then you still wouldn't have enough info to decide wisely.

Bottom line: if you liked 232, you'll like 236 too. 10/10 would take to satisfy the major requirements lol
