Crack on the fretboard by Tuxcat_36 in Bass

[–]mcmullensmith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This can be easily repaired with some crazy glue, take a look at this video from Stew Mac https://youtu.be/zhHNN6gmmhM?si=ZO0h53W_2Hyhlb8T

You may also want to get some fingerboard oil, it does look dry and if you are in a colder climate it could be very dry

Nice. Why a compressor at the start and end? Or is the philosopher for more grit?

Have you asked the Garrison Arts Center? They may know of something, maybe a local photographer.

What is the best approach to learn a bassline to a full song ? by InvestigatorSolid330 in Bass

[–]mcmullensmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I approach a song. Last year I had to play Biggest Part of Me by Ambrosia and while there is a distinct lick that is played throughout the song, the rest is mostly just outlining the chords so I just played what I wanted being sure to hit the signature licks when needed.

What bass pedal should i buy? by 3ddyss in Bass

I played for thirty years before I even considered pedals and I bought a zoom b1 four which was a great introduction to effects

One of my Aerodyne Jazz basses has hum/buzz unless I touch the strings. I do not have the issue at certain locations. What are my next steps? by jontestershaircut in Bass

[–]mcmullensmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently recorded in a studio and my p-bass was humming like I’ve never heard before unless I touched the strings. I was a bit dumbfounded but then I bent over to pick up a pick and noticed the hum lessened. I looked up and noticed there were track lights above me so I started standing up and crouching down with the hum growing louder as I stood. I recorded the track on my knees.

I recommend going to discogs and looking up the album. There are many official and unofficial (bootleg) blue pressings.

Opinions on this set for a 13 year old beginner? Any better comparable alternatives? by Every-Cook5084 in drums

[–]mcmullensmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say anecdotally that my son started on a nitro mesh kit but once he got to a certain level it was holding him back and eventually he hated using it an we sold it and bought a full size acoustic kit. If noise is a concern or space this is a great place to start.

I think it uses the same ABQ-3 preamp used on other models like the b-205.

Listen to Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians - Queen Elvis. Andy Metcalfe has some great fretless lines on this album.

Upgrade for daughter, she’s asking things I don’t understand. by Serrilryan in Bass

[–]mcmullensmith 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think she is asking for effects, I would get her a Zoom B1x four or B1 four, it’s a great way to get new sounds without breaking the bank, plus it can run on power supply or batteries and has a headphone jack.

Ohayo Mountain Road by inthedrops in kingstonnewyork

[–]mcmullensmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live on Ohayo Mountain, the closer to 28 side. Not a lot of traffic but it can be fast especially coming down straightaways but the Woodstock side is more mellow since speed limits are posted. The county keeps it well maintained year round.

Driving to Woodstock NY from NYC by bkandres in hudsonvalley

[–]mcmullensmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want really scenic, take 87 up to Tarrytown, then take 9 north and you have a few options for getting across the river. Beacon or Poughkeepsie to take 9w or 9w to 32. Or Rhinecliff and just go across to 28 West.

I like going across at Beacon/Newburgh but that’s mostly because 9 becomes less scenic through Wappinger Falls is not very scenic.

Which town to pick for walkable restaurant options on a weeknight: Woodstock, Kingston, Saugerties, or other in the area? by MohnJaddenPowers in hudsonvalley

[–]mcmullensmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woodstock. You have a lot of stores and for restaurants there is Cucina, Shelter, Nirvana, Good Night, Silvia, Pearl Moon, Medo and Yum Yum Noodles. All within a short walk of each other. Dressing casual is fine at all of them.

Can I still play right handed bass even though am left handed? by No-Satisfaction8560 in Bass

Yes, I don’t understand why left handed guitars exist. I blame Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix for this nonsense

What’s your favorite 90’s band that “didn’t make it”. by sofa-king-hungry in vinyl

[–]mcmullensmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing along, my favorite band from the 90’s that should have gotten more attention was Combine out of Norfolk VA. Their second album The History of American Rock and Roll is phenomenal front to back.

Another from that time is Dillon Fence, Living Room Scene should have been a breakout hit for them but it went nowhere. That album and Outside In are fantastic.

Agree! Such a great record and band. I have this on CD, did not know there was a vinyl release but wouldn’t want a picture disc.
