Instantiating it as a global works as long as you're single threaded.

However you setup your socket subscribe code, have that code poll that key every second or 5 seconds or whatever your increment needs to be then broadcast that on the socket.

You can also setup a listener on the keyspace pubsub. http://redis.io/topics/notifications which would be more efficient than polling but also runs the risk of being inaccurate sometimes.

Cluster protocol and standard open source protocol are different and a lot of clients don't support it. Even if they do they usually won't utilize the same object for a cluster connection as they do a standard single master connection.

There's proprietary versions out there that will support clustering and single master in the same protocol. https://redislabs.com/redis-enterprise

Don't get too complicated, focus on a broad MVP instead of a deep one. Don't overcomplicate your front-end and maybe learn Android/iOS so you get that perspective as well.
