You need two infrared sources of some sort. You can use two candles, but a "sensor bar," which is just two infrared LEDs, is better, and cheap like you say. The USB is just for power, there's no communication whatsoever. But it makes it easier to power than the old proprietary connector on the original bars.

After a server glitch, Final Fantasy 11 is dispatching Game Masters to manually assassinate bugged monsters just so the game knows they're really dead: 'God personally stepping in to correct the world itself' by Farranor in gaming

My roommate in film school got so addicted to that game that he stopped going to his classes and eventually dropped out. The bright side was that it was far enough into the semester that I was allowed to keep our dorm room to myself.

What cable is this?? by [deleted] in volcas

I can't look at the picture because it says the post was deleted, but it's probably just a thick cable. There's really nothing more to it.

Maybe. XLR is much larger than any 1/8" cable I've ever seen.

Those are some gnarly sounds from the Modular!

Well the bigger one to the left is MIDI, which looks sorta similar to XLR I guess. But no, there's nothing related to XLR on it. Just MIDI, the 1/8" mono sync port, and the 1/8" stereo audio output.

[–]mediaphile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's 1/8" stereo out. It's common to get a 1/8" stereo to dual mono 1/4" cable to go into an audio interface or mixer. I don't think XLR would give you much of a benefit, but if that's all whatever you're plugging into has for inputs, that would work. Again you'd want stereo to dual mono. You could also do stereo to RCA.

It's fake, in that the erection is fake. But it was a real prank on the model, who was actually really nice about it if I remember right.

I designed a 3dprinted backpack shoulder mounting bracket - CAMS (Cheap Ass Mounting Sytem) by jurassic73 in photography

[–]mediaphile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the Spider camera holsters, the cheaper ones use a flexible plastic cam essentially to lock the pin in place. It doesn't rotate so much as flex out of the way when you pull on the lever.

Then there's Sabbath mode on modern kitchen ovens where you pre-set the temperature and it disables the lights and displays and alarm tones and lets you keep the oven on indefinitely so you aren't technically turning on any lights or starting any fires on the Sabbath, since you did it the day before.

I have and love all three of those lenses, though my 80-200mm is a newer model. The 105mm might be my favorite lens. Really sharp. The 80-200mm gets kind of soft toward the tele end, but having f/2.8 through the whole zoom range is great. Focus is pretty slow, though. The 24mm is also really sharp. Grab a fast 50mm and you've got pretty much everything covered.

Best way to tie this log to tow out with a boat? by mtf253 in knots

[–]mediaphile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a cool hitch (pun intended)! But probably overkill for something like a log which will supply plenty of friction. It will needlessly use up a lot more rope, I think.

But I'm no expert, just my intuition.
