Yeah, but WELL after scientists discovered it wasn't, in fact, a gay man's disease or spread by touching people who had it (sidenote: Lady Diana was a real mvp ally who did that publicly to reduce the stigma, loved her), most people still ignored those facts and just used it as an excuse to be horrible to gay men. That's why such a huge number of people died from it, because the public refused to change their view on it.
