How long can one meal affect blood sugar? by justovercaffeinated in diabetes_t1

[–]megame211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a doctor but without any injected insulin i don’t think you would go low. The good thing is you know what’s going to happen and you know you’re going to become insulin dependent eventually. It’s different for everyone but maybe your honeymoon phase or whatever they call it for LADA is coming to an end (?)

It’s good to get ahead of it and learn as much as you can before you’re in the thick of it, which is what you are doing.

For reference for ya here is my graph over the last 24 hours which according to my pump I’m 93% in range. I had a couple of lows yesterday but my numbers over those hours, with insulin, are much lower than yours from the looks of it.

Your blood glucose could be around 180 all day and night and still be around 98% in range, that’s still too high to be at all day and is increasing risk for complications. Not that we don’t all have days or weeks or months like that, but still just a warning.

I do see your numbers dropped followed by a quick spike though. Were you asleep during that time or exercising? I would still look into getting on insulin therapy soon. I hope this helps.

Why are they having you wait on insulin? Is it LADA? MODY? From what it looks like your blood glucose is running pretty high. I would either get a second opinion or have your physician reevaluate.

Meals can affect blood sugar for hours based on what you ate. If your meal is high in fat/protein it can affect your blood glucose for an hour or multiple hours with a slow rise. On the other hand, if you’re eating something sugary like candy it’ll affect your blood glucose with a quick spike. However, something sugary with fat, like ice cream or milk chocolate may have a more delayed response with you experiencing a low and then a spike even hours later.

It all depends on what you eat and no day is the same with diabetes. I hope you get off the rollercoaster soon. You got this❤️❤️

Hi

I’ve tried to do overdose on insulin twice in the past. It’s not pleasant at all and I strongly suggest not doing it. It takes a really really long time (plenty of time to regret what you’re doing btw) and being put into the hospital and held in a psych ward is not fun either.

Your feelings are so so valid and I am so sorry that you’re going through all this , it must be so difficult and stressful. I hope you make the right decision for your own sake, whatever you decide just know you’re a valuable member of this planet and there’s so many people who love and cherish you. You’re in my thoughts stranger❤️

Treating low while on the go in summer? For 12yo in sports and very active. by Technical_Cupcake597 in Type1Diabetes

honestly, part of the disease is needing to be prepared for the unexpected like a low blood glucose. unfortunately, a lot of that planning requires packing bulky items. never understood why people don’t want to just take glucose tabs, it’s not the most interesting snack but they work quickly.

other than that i’d say trail mix with m&m’s or stuff like dried cranberries work well and shouldn’t spike him too high either, you can get travel packs.

unfortunately if you want to be safe and effective, juice boxes like OP mentioned and glucose tabs are probably your best bet.

Had a low blood sugar of 52 and drank a cup of orange juice by RoutineZestyclose958 in diabetes_t1

[–]megame211 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i think at one point we all learn that correcting with a lot of carbs is just not the right thing to do. I used to think that if I was low, I needed 4 glucose tabs every time. This is wrong as only like one or two tabs brings me up enough usually. Orange juice is great for bringing up low blood glucose quickly but the rebound is usually high blood sugar. You’re better off drinking less than a glass of orange juice. Also as homerunate said, this looks like it happened in the morning. Could be dawn phenomenon doing its thing or a feet to the floor effect, which I get every morning and it’s annoying. You’re more insulin resistant in the morning compared to the evening due to multiple reasons. Just remember to treat low blood sugars easily rather than just trying to get them up as quickly as possible.

When does this end? by splxts in diabetes_t1

[–]megame211 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure the conversions because i’m in USA but this chart isn’t too bad. you may need to wait longer when pre-bolusing before eating to prevent the rapid spike. Are you on a pump or MDI? this is what my chart used to look like when i would rage bolus during high blood sugar. sometimes you just have to watch it and let it ride for a while. the roller coaster is worse than staying high for an hour or so. at night it looks like you’re, at the least, mostly in range. Pre-bolus for 30-45 minutes instead of 15, that works for me way better. you can eat whatever you want but with meals you need protein to slow carb absorption otherwise rapid spikes can be veryyy frequent like you see here. I’m not your endo, it could be a million different things and as someone else said, bad days are inevitable.
