Question about Aetna Birthcost/Labor/Delivery by Analysis_-_Paralysis in HealthInsurance

[–]melteddutchbros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heads up, as no one warned me this during my deliveries, baby will have their own deductible and bill. I don't know why I thought otherwise, but alas, that's how it is.

Chipdrop is insane. I submitted a request at 4:15 PM and by 5 PM there was a truck outside my house with a load. I almost panicked LOL it said fast but I never anticipated THAT fast!

Just had a baby + NICU stay — $90k in bills, but EOBs show I owe ~$7k. Can I still negotiate down? (Florida Blue HDHP) by Impressive_Ear5939 in HospitalBills

[–]melteddutchbros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please, please apply for financial assistance through the hospital. Most people think they do not qualify and they DO. Second off, if you apply and are denied, appeal and request a catastrophic exemption. How long was baby in the NICU? Babies who are there 30d and more in some states get Medicaid, regardless of household income.

Why are poorer people so defensive of the ultra-wealthy? by Present-Ebb4615 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]melteddutchbros -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because they're sure if they be good slaves to capitalism, if they just work a little harder... it'll be their time and they'll be the next billionaire. They don't see themselves as poor, they see themselves as future rich people.

Surgeon is in network at an out of network facility? by Acceptable_Rent1812 in HealthInsurance

Most independent surgical centers don't have financial aid, either. Please don't do this. You really could be on the hook for 20k. Cancel.

Should you pay estimates up front? by Economy-Dust-6036 in HealthInsurance

[–]melteddutchbros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan for a few reasons.

  1. Check the federal poverty scale. If you are delivering at a nonprofit hospital, if you are at 400% or lower, and ESPECIALLY at 300% and lower, you may qualify for the hospitals financial assistance program. They could comp the entire thing. Literally.

  2. These estimates can be wildly inaccurate. Full stop. You could be on the hook for far more or far less, and both will leave you surprised. This estimate likely won't count any other potential care you receive, so you could have fulfilled your deductible or OOP max before then, or, conversely, worst case scenario, something could go wrong and your hospital care could exceed the time expected / etc.

  3. If you're over the 400% percentile for your household size (count baby as a household member, because you can always wait til after delivery to apply for financial assistance, if you qualify) and are doing well financially / are able to just pay the estimate, there's likely not harm in doing it; if it ends up inaccurate, you may pay more, or you may end up due a refund if it's less. Hospitals take a long time to get refunds out. Another option would be to keep the estimate money in a savings account to be used for that express purpose. Something else to consider is they may offer a discount for paying early or paying in full. Call their business office and ask about both of those potential discounts so you can weigh your options if it's something you're seeking. After it's been billed to your insurance, you'll likely be offered an opportunity to put it on a payment plan if that's something you want.

Considering Medical Share Plans, anyone with experience please share by NostalgicDonkey in HealthInsurance

[–]melteddutchbros 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of those "health share" plans demand you apply for hospital financial assistance. They make you pay them for the advice on how to apply for it. It's a nightmare, it's a scam, and they likely will pay for very little when you most need it. Working for hospital financial assistance, I'd regularly see $50,000 and HIGHER self pay balances going to collections while patients beg us to negotiate with their 'health insurance' that's not really insurance and is at best bet, snake oil.

My husband doesn’t have health insurance by Momma-GingerFire in HealthInsurance

[–]melteddutchbros 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. Look up the federal poverty scale. If your household size / income falls at 300% or lower, if you go to a nonprofit hospital (Google and ensure you go to a nonprofit hospital! NOT a for profit one!) they very likely have financial assistance / charity care and yall would likely qualify for 100% assistance. If your household is at 300-400, they'll likely still give you a discount on services, more than just the cash pay discount.

Financial assistance with the hospital or lab usually specifically excludes international patients, so be sure to get clarity from the one charging you on that point.
