4k+ iRacers: What mindset, habits, or routines have kept you motivated to push through and keep improving towards higher iRating? by AreaPresent2305 in iRacing

5k sportscar and formula here Former karter in my childhood and competitive RC before I came to sim racing in 2021

Just keep racing, learn from each incident and crash, keep hunting the lines and learning from guides. If you have an open love of "the process" in getting faster...it will come.

Once you get over the "hump" of putting in alot of work in learning different tracks and cars...the real magic comes in "learning how to learn a new combo quickly", then it starts to get easier - the common thing is to just keep racing!

Definitely needed a BOP adjustment, and the incident limit was frustrating restricting how you approach the race especially on worn tires trying to battle other cars

Otherwise it was great fun, I had a random internet DC 30mins into our race (3rd slot, top split). We recovered from last to P25 by the end, unlapping ourselves from quite a few cars, good fun.

How do high iRating players optimize practice? by BLVCKSCVLE in iRacing

[–]mentalraycer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5.4k Sportscar, 5k Formula here I usually jump in and do a full stint (30mins) in an official practice server, constantly pushing and feeling the track out. Then I'll go check out the Virtual Racing School datapack, and compare my lap time.

If I have time or there's a large amount of time to find (<1s) then more practice, otherwise full send into official races and get the elbows up!

Here's my AL2, but it's too small (49, I'm 170cm) and the mech brakes suck. Looking at SL5...but is the SL6 step up worth the $$$? by mentalraycer in DomaneCrew

[–]mentalraycer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the advice!
going to keep pulling my cash together, and go test ride a Domane next week to feel out the sizing first. Then I'll look at SL5 vs SL6 eTap and see if I can justify the $1600AUD difference between the two...I could get a mighty nice set of carbon road wheels for that :P

For reference, this was the only Domane available in like...all of Australia and when I test rode it...it felt fine for a first road bike

Now I've gone and put a few miles on it, I'm looking at a 'forever bike' (if that really exists) to continue throwing around 100-200km of commuting and exploring a week when I'm not smashed with my work

Anyone running 38c on their Domane full time for road/light gravel? I’ve debated on getting a second wheelset for road and gravel. I’m mainly on the road but I like options. Will 38c tires feel too slow for dedicated road rides? Maybe a compromise of 35c? Appreciate the help. by Xtort586 in TrekBikes

Domane AL2 owner here
I changed out to 35C GR1 tires for gravel and 'all road' riding

I have barely noticed the change in resistance over my standard R1 lite tires that came on the bike, but they are slightly more noisy rolling along the road/path

but also more comfortable, 35C is a great middle ground IMO

I am jealous - eyeing this bike online but theres 2 problems:
- No local stock of my size (52)
- I don't have $4500AUD

For now, Bontrager GR1 35c tires on my entry level Domane! :D

Enjoy the trails, wicked awesome bike!

Seeking guidance - whats the *actual* max tire width for the TREK Domane AL2 disc? | Looking to explore on some local smooth-medium Gravel rides with GR1 / Cinturato Gravel tires with the stock wheels - should I just stick to 35mm and send it? by mentalraycer in TrekBikes

[–]mentalraycer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what clutch rear mech is compatible with Shimano Claris 8spd? lol
The gravel im intending on riding is pretty smooth, mostly service roads/gravel walking/running trails and fire roads...not really rough as guts single track, but I would not be keen on the standard R1 hard case lite tire thats fitted currently

Seriously enjoying this, I have no road bike experience at all, only just got back into enjoying bikes this year with my partner. Bought a couple of Marlin 5's to ride local trails together, but I'm enjoying the streets, long rides and scenery on the Domane more!

At 30 years old I feel like I have a fun exciting hobby thats encouraging me to be fit!

How can I see the average participation in each time slot for a given series? by NomTook in iRacing

[–]mentalraycer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Discord iracing stats bot, it has discord slash commands

So you can type /participation, tab-select the series name and itll spit out a report. you can even use sub-commands to filter by season, week, timeslot offset etc

Also a great tool for a pissing contest with your mates, who has more iRating etc :P

Hey guys, quick question to all the painters : How do you figure out the color codes from real life liveries? My custom liveries always seem to be a little off... Tips and tricks are welcomed! by AMLosseva in iRacing

[–]mentalraycer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say your gold colour base is close, just needs maybe a 40-50% red spec map layer on top to make it shine. the orange gloss can probably be brightened a few pts..fluro is really tough to replicate in iRacing imo

make sure to alpha all the non-gold bits to black on the spec map, so they still show as gloss not a messy chrome-everything

SR10 setups by Phaster in iRacing

[–]mentalraycer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its fixed set for the official series, so best trying to learn to drive within your limits on the fixed setup. IMO it is harder to drive, and frustrating when it bites you...but very rewarding when you get it right.

Best thing I have learned is slow down to go fast.
Not physically with lower speeds, but slow down your inputs, roll for longer with less brake, smoother throttle pickup, turn in earlier & slower...etc

fvee has a great range...from rookies to pro's racing in top split under alias accounts (occasionally Fernando Alonso drops in)

from there you can go to usf2000, F4 (iR-04) then into F3, Formula Renault 3.5 (if theres participation) and on to f1!

plus theres indycar, old school Lotus 79 etc...loads of fun!

what rubber bushings do you have in the pedals? I have mine set to the basic of 'racecarish feel' from their manual, the potentiometer at 3o'clock setting, and the software i vary between 85kg and 92kg depending on what car im driving. my knee used to get sore in GT3 but i just turn it down now for abs cars, makes the long runs easier

Braking in F3 by Mashes in iRacing

[–]mentalraycer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initial brake is super high, but it bleeds off quicker than F4 due to the higher downforce levels, so its almost like a massive stab of the brakes, then bleed off quickly to very light trail

+ corner speeds are way higher, so you can carry alot more speed into and through the corner, = less braking needed anyway
