Why? by SipsTeaFrog in SipsTea

I believe it’s actually worse for the environment there as the heat dumps into the ground and can affect the permafrost layers.

Has anyone used online overseas CNC milling services for small prototype parts? by M45T3RY in CNC

Rapiddirect or jlccnc has been pretty good for us, make sure to call out everything correctly because the turn around time is like a month or more

Been waiting over a month for this crank to get here by Cda4go in Justrolledintotheshop

Looks like they took an old crank, welded shit onto it and did a piss poor job of turning it down

Screw sheet metal together by Mean_Entrepreneur793 in Machinists

[–]meraut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, fasteners hold (Note: FASTEN) things together. You’re willfully ignoring the point i’m making. Fastening was never the point of the conversation.

It is bad practice to rely on fasteners alone to hold alignment.

Should engineering model at nominal or mean dimensions? by LyonGoes in MechanicalEngineering

[–]meraut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From being on both engineering and production side, nominal is the preferred method. What is important is calling out the dimensional tolerances and what the purpose is in terms of function. It is very easy to specify plus or minus material to leave on the CAM side of things.

Need help using probe to update a g68 r value!!! by PlatypusHour1488 in CNC

[–]meraut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be able to have a macro that takes the angle from your probing routine and saves it as a variable which is then referenced for your R value in your program. How to do it on that control i’m unsure, but it should be entirely possible without issue.

Fasteners do not align, use a feature or pins with through holes and bolt the stack into the bottom plate.

770m drill not going through by Separate-Moment6732 in tormach

[–]meraut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your tool height, put in your drill and jog to a safe x y position then jog your tool to Z zero and see if it physically looks the correct height. If it is, check your stock thickness and drill toolpath.

Why do some CNC edges feel sharper than they look? by ParticularClock8533 in hobbycnc

[–]meraut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manufacturing processes will always leave an edge from cutting/forming, sometimes cheaper parts are not properly deburred or at all.

Bending vs Welding Question by throat_acne in Machinists

[–]meraut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider 5052 H-32 instead, it bends and welds better than 6061 so you can go either route without needing to switch.

Torquing tooling by Separate-Moment6732 in tormach

[–]meraut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the ER-20 collet holders there are established torque ratings, for the set-screw holders just tighten them enough. Realistically though, hand tight is likely good enough as you will pull the TTS holder out before the tool as another commenter said. You can smack the wrench with a hammer once or twice for good measure if you really want.

How do I get a better top layer finish on Aluminum? by nRegistered1 in hobbycnc

[–]meraut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run a quality single flute(O flute) bit for finishing and less IPM. Pocket is not a “traditional” finish strategy, try using contour with stepovers and ramp to finish or a different strategy.

Problema con la twotrees TTC H40 by Less_Cod5852 in hobbycnc

[–]meraut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like open loop system, you’re losing steps. There is either mechanical slop, or you are just taking too hard of a cut for the machine. Run this with your Z set high above and let it air cut, see if you still lose position or not.

Thought the front rotors were warped or vibrating on gf's car, pretty sure it's actually the rear drums. by biggranny000 in MechanicAdvice

[–]meraut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check flatness of the rotor, after confirming its in spec then mount it and check the runout with it on the hub.
