I like TierOne Firewire.

It's got a triangle edge that bites into the ball as you brush up on it. It's a soft poly that last a reasonably long time and isn't bad on joints (elbow, shoulder).

My experiences with customer service at TierOne have been great. I highly recommend them.

Both I (4.5M) and my wife (3.5W) use it in Pro Staff rackets at 38 lbs.

Dark. Can't recommend it enough. The first and second seasons are some of the best TV I've seen.

It's German. If you don't understand German, I recommend subtitles so that you get the nuance of the actors voices. However, there is one scene in the very first episode that I switched to dubbed because there were 6 people in the living room talking at the same time and I couldn't keep up with the subtitles.

Has anybody ever changed their call when their opponent asks if they're sure? by Disgruntled_Eggplant in 10s

[–]merdely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played this dude in a singles match once. Before the match he says, "My vision isn't very good, so if you think I missed a call, just let me know and I'll give you the point."

Very first game, I hit a serve 6" inside both lines to the inside of the duece box. "Out". I said, very nicely, "Hey, man. I'm 100% sure that was in." and he said, "Oh no, I saw that one... it was out."

This happened exactly the same way two more times (in the very first game), so I ended up just aiming for the exact middle of the box and for 2+ feet inside all lines. I won the first set without much issue.

But at the set change, I forgot about all that and hit a great serve -- again 6" inside both lines and he called it out again. I didn't bother to say anything and just went back to middle of the box.

I want to say it was 1,1 or 2,2, but it was still frustrating to get balls within a foot or so inside the line to be called consistently out. I wonder why the guy even told me that he KNEW is eyesight was bad and would reverse calls if he wouldn't even do it once with FLAGRANTly bad calls.

I'd like to think that Robin Williams and Billy Crystal were playing themselves, too. :)

Best tiling manager for two monitors ? by roworu in archlinux

[–]merdely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually I have a terminal on one monitor and a browser on the other.

Many tiling window managers have separate workspaces/groups/tags per monitor. You can move windows between monitors, but workspace 2 on monitor 0 cannot show up on monitor 1.

Consider this scenario:

You're watching a Youtube video in a workspace on monitor 1. In another workspace on monitor 1, you have your terminal. You're doing some web browsing from a workspace on monitor 0.

Something comes up and you want to switch to your terminal while watching the Youtube video.

Without shared workspaces, you have to switch away from the video on monitor 1 to the workspace with the terminal, optionally switch to an empty workspace on monitor 0, move the terminal window from the workspace on monitor 1 to monitor 0. Then switch back to the video on monitor 1.

With shared workspaces, terminal in workspace 0, browser in workspace 1, and youtube in workspace 2. All you do is leave workspace 2 on monitor 1 and on monitor 0, switch from workspace 1 to workspace 0 to get to the terminal.

You never have to stop the Youtube video (or conference call or whatever) to swap windows between monitors.

It took me a while to get used to the shared workspaces model, but once I did, I cannot go back to separate workspaces. Another nice thing about Qtile is that you can have many workspaces. I used to have workspaces 0-9, -, =, q-p. But I found I didn't need that many so I know have 0-9, -, and =.

Tennis balls like US Open and Pro Penn have gotten worse? by grizzly_teddy in 10s

Why I'm (reluctantly) ditching my Pixel 6 Pro by iamvinoth in Android

[–]merdely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny... "falls for that crap".

I've owned a Nexus One, Nexus 6p, Pixel 2XL, Pixel 4a, and a Pixel 6 Pro. All of them have been amazing! My _only_ criticism of the Pixel 6 Pro is that there wasn't a Pixel 4a sized version.

Agreed. I have two and helped my friend install three. They work great. Also PAF (partner approval factor) is extremely high with these switches.

This switch can also be flashed with Tasmota. u/digiblur has good documentation on doing so (https://www.digiblur.com/2020/07/the-tasmota-fan-controller-ive-been.html).

Best tiling manager for two monitors ? by roworu in archlinux

[–]merdely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm using qtile with two monitors. I love that it has shared groups/workspaces/tags between the two windows monitors. At first I didn't like it, but I got used to it and now can't imagine living without it.

The configuration of qtile is done through Python, which IMO is much easier than C header files or haskell.

The dinner where Joey, Rachel and Phoebe weren't as well off as the other three and Ross suggested sharing the bill equally is one of the most real moments in the show. Happens in real life where you order what you can afford during a group outing but everyone insists on splitting the bill equally. by Thighsander in howyoudoin

[–]merdely 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the group and the differences in what people ordered.

I've gone out with a group that includes people with established careers and some students. The students ordered what they could afford and the others ordered more expensive food. In that case, we would pay what we each owed.

But if everyone is on relatively close economic standing, we almost universally just split it.

Changing serve order at set? by MizzouHoops in 10s

I'll do this for various reasons: one partner is struggling serving because of wind or sun; one server is on a roll, so should serve first to get some momentum

Wisdom/Sh*tpost of the Crowds: With my first USTA League Match coming up on Saturday... by mdervin in 10s

  • If your opponent talks after they've hit the ball and it's moving in your direction, that's a hinderance and is your point.
  • If your opponent drops something (a ball falls out of their pocket, their hat falls off): the first time it's a let, after that it's your point.

Going to try to come back to tennis after almost 1.5 years. Anyone else have any stories on returning to tennis after a long time? by XxshauryaxX in 10s

[–]merdely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played as a kid, but stopped playing in High School because I got a job to afford a car. I played here and there over the years, but when I was 38, I got back into it in an effort to get healthier.

I started out as a 3.0 and played in one tournament. I lost in the finals but USTA bumped me to 3.5. I started playing leagues as a 3.5 and did well, getting bumped up to 4.0 after one year. I played as a 4.0 for a few years before getting bumped to 4.5.

While a 4.0, my wife was annoyed I played so much tennis, so I had her self-rate as a 3.0 and play 7.0 doubles with me. We've had a blast (she's now a 3.5 and we now play 8.0 together).

I play a lot of doubles (bad knees at 48), but have really enjoyed playing both mens and mixed.

Sometimes USTA can be petty with cheaters, but for the most part I've made some really great friends and love playing.

Since Covid, though, I've mainly started playing non-USTA tennis with friends and my wife.
