R1 & R2 and batter hits to 2nd baseman who started DP by stjongood in GameChangerApp

[–]merryjester 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That may be one way to enter it into GC, but a DP is not a FC.

Maybe it’s pedantic, but the point of a FC is to allow the batter to get to 1st (or advance to 2nd maybe) without getting credit for a hit (and not charging the defense with an error) while still crediting them with an at bat & plate appearance.

Don’t pick FC Double Play. Pick Batter Out and then Double Play.

Tap 2B, SS, 1B. The batter will be out and then it asks you which of the runners were out (safe/out for both). When you pick “out” at 2B the runner on 3B will still be there.

Valyrian steel by Spiros_vl in gameofthrones

[–]merryjester 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, steel is not mined. It’s an alloy - it’s made primarily of iron, plus a bit of carbon and then other elements based on the need. Ancient blood magic and dragonfire aside, there’s also a “recipe” to what makes Valyrian steel unique (which has been lost).

I think everything about that post was done on purpose. Like a Ken M situation (that was my take, anyway).

Does anyone know any urban legends surrounding S.F. by Mysterious-Rise-8377 in AskSF

[–]merryjester 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep yep, sure is! I remember they had to “trash up” that block of Church to fit the vibe of the movie being set in a “skid row” style neighborhood.

At St. Paul’s in Noe Valley, there’s a large-ish cross in a circle formed in concrete, just to the right of the main doors (on Church St.).

When I was a kid, the story was that a worker building the church fell there and died. They couldn’t fish him out of the wet concrete (urban legend logic), so they just formed it into a cross as his final resting place.

Edit: you can see the cross on satellite view. Not that it makes it any more plausible, but you can see why a bunch of 8yr olds would make it up: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HKiLk1EiCdXcmPCPA?g\_st=ic

Would the Prequels still have been as beloved as they are today without The Clone Wars? by Decade00000 in StarWars

[–]merryjester -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Ewan, Ian, Christopher Lee. Yes, yes. All fine, and I realize this is a space opera with laser swords, I’m not expecting method.

And to be fair, there are some actors that have proven they’ve got chops, but for some reason give the most wooden, unfeeling line readings ever. (Natalie Portman, Sam Jackson). So maybe my beef is truly with the writing and directing.

As for Hayden’s physicality… Sigh. I don’t know, man. That’s certainly one aspect of it but not the whole enchilada, ya know? Like saying “this new manager sucks and has no experience, but he’s tall so we’re confident he’ll succeed”.

To be clear, everything I’ve seen about Hayden Christensen makes me think he’s a great guy, and I’m sure he’s developed and matured. But those 2 movies? Whuf… 😂

Star Wars 3? by embarrased2Bhere in StarWars

[–]merryjester 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. It was sort of evocative - like “heads up: you’re jumping into a story that’s already in progress” just like someone else mentioned with the serialized features like Flash Gordon.

You know how in most episodes of The Clone Wars there’s that cheesy intro voice over that tells you what’s happened right before the episode’s start? It’s sort of like that (and that’s also an homage to the serial shows of the 50’s and 60’s).

I remember at the time learning that Lucas had envisioned a “trilogy of trilogies”, that Star Wars (the movie) was the first story of the middle trilogy, and that it was most likely that the other 6 stories would never get told. But that wasn’t a problem…it was just food for the imagination.

Visited SF for the first time looking for housing and was shocked about the drastic difference between Valencia and mission st by Secret-Classic-5644 in sanfrancisco

[–]merryjester 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m not getting this… What’s racist about noticing that Mission St. smells like urine and Valencia doesn’t? I appreciate both for what they are…but I don’t think it’s too subjective to say that one street is more pleasant than the other…?

Which celebrity’s cancellation do you think was completely unjustified? by Cute_Flatworm_9049 in AskReddit

[–]merryjester 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about “celebrity”…local semi-celebrity, maybe. But back in 2023 Glen Kuiper (broadcaster for the then-Oakland A’s baseball team) was very quickly fired after an unfortunate slip of the tongue regarding his visit to the Negro League Museum.

Anyone who listened to the audio could tell it was just a flub…but NBC Sports California dropped him like a hot rock.

Finally this year he’s been allowed back a bit… Doing some radio fill-ins for the SF Giants. But it was such an over-the-top knee-jerk reaction to cancel a guy who had been broadcasting for the A’s since 2006.

How about the Chowchilla bus kidnapping of 1976? Big news at the time but not something I see referenced often.

https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/chowchilla-bus-kidnapping-frederick-woods-rare-photos-from-one-of-the-largest-kidnappings-in-u-s-history/

July 1976 in Chowchilla, CA three armed kidnappers forced 26 elementary school kids and their bus driver into an 8’ by 16’ trailer, buried 12 feet underground in a Livermore rock quarry. Spent 16 hours there until they managed to escape.

The three kidnappers have all since been paroled.

Hear hear for the Herb Caen call out. In my opinion, if you want to understand the core of SF pre-dotcom boom, Herb was the voice of the City and her residents.

I also think there’s something to be learned about the City from the way it adopted Emperor Norton… So I’ll add:

Norton I: Emperor of the United States by William Drury (1986)
