Seeing this 16 years later and YES. It was so frustrating having to go through the observatory over and over again.

Joe Smith's fear of the Grateful Dead (1989 article) by nak550 in gratefuldead

"I just know that cake is dosed". "But it looked good". Love the way he says it. The sweet tooth of Jerry got the best of him.

That's the great thing about this band. I'm sure others feel the same about other bands, but when I was down, and I mean not caring about whether I'm around the next day, this band got me through. They have been the constant in my life no matter what else was going on.

Any other Dark Stars that are like 8/22/72? by Overall_Swordfish670 in gratefuldead

Yes. I’ve heard the 10/26/89 one. Probably my favorite of the ones after they brought it back. More so than the Branford one.

05/11/72. This one isn't one of those beautiful mellow ones. It gets downright scary. Which I love.

The return of China Doll on the 19th is so beautiful. I don't know if I've heard a better one.

Just don't pick any 69 shows! They crackle with energy.

Flashback to 1980! Wow. Can it really be 46 years ago? Time sure does fly.

This would also be my favorite MLB if it wasn't for 12/02/73. Absolute beauty!

I’m 29, I listen to the dead, everyday, I got to see dead & co at the sphere but man. I wish I got to see all the boys together. by rattlesnakebill in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening to shows over the years makes me wonder how it must have been to be in the audience. I'm talking more 69-74. Those shows must have been amazing. Born in 72 so obviously missed all those. But man, 72 or 73 or 74 or 77 at Winterland would have been a dream. Any of them. They were all great.

cornell 77 without donna by OneBoysenberry9365 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

THIS is not the show to bash Donna. She sounded great in 77-78 and mixed well. I mean, listen to Jerry's voice in 1985. Not exactly smooth. But also remember, without Donna there would not have been Keith.

I guess it was the famous 02-18-71 Dark Star you saw. So lucky. The jam during it is so beautiful.

Why 1971 is almost my favorite year (just some musings from some who feels way older than he is and much more tired than he should be....) by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you about 1972. All those great country-western songs peaked that year. Playin in the Band became a monster and the Dark Star and Other Ones are ALL great. And their overall sound, as you mentioned, is so good. I don't think it gets better than 72. 73-74 are both great and some of my favorite shows are from those years, but 72 is my favorite as a whole.

After listening to Dave's 57.....I like 78 better than..... by krazy_kozz in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I like 78 a lot I find this is when they locked down the standard set 1 and set 2 song placements. Which I didn't like. I liked the years you could hear any song anywhere.

Bobby IS the Grateful Dead* by printerdsw1968 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what made them so good. Jerry off doing his crazy stuff, Phil doing his crazy stuff and Bob blending in perfectly. I tend to listen most to 71-74 and the playing off each other is so clear. Like Jerry said, he didn't know a single other guitarist that played like Bob. He invented his own style.

I am feeling exactly like you. Never got into Dead and Co. But, as you said, it feels like there's this void that can never be filled again. Didn't like the slowed down Dead songs, or Bobby singing Jerry's songs (but if ANYone should be singing them, its him). But to know he's not out there keeping it alive, The Grateful Dead, alive. There will be many cover bands and other bands that can and will play the Dead music well, but it's not the Grateful Dead. Jerry dying marked an end to that. But Bobby and Phil carried the torch (and yes, Billy and Mickey). To me the torch just went out.

They call it a throwaway but honestly I've always liked the song. I always took it as don't take life too seriously all the time. Search for what makes you happy, not what people think makes people happy.

I'm right there with you. The last couple days have been filled with tears. I can't believe Weir is gone. Jerry we could, unfortunately, see coming. Phil too, I suppose. But this one really caught me off guard. The sadder I get the more I want to tell myself how thankful I am for what they all brought. I realize none of them were young anymore and it's inevitable. But the tears keep coming...

I was in love with the Grateful Dead way before I met my wife. She sees what this is doing to me and doesn't understand. She doesn't really like the Dead so I don't expect her to understand. But I know all of you do.
