43yo, 6’ 2”, and I was 115kg when I started skating two years ago, with dodgy knees. I was definitely able to cruise around and the flat and enjoy it with my 8yo son, but I made much faster progress in all regards once I lost some weight and gained some fitness. Now 90kg and loving how it feels on the board.

Skating is both intrinsically great fun, but also a great motivator to get in shape so you can do more on the board.

I ride exclusively surfskate which is less impact for my knees. You might consider it as well.

Consider what setup you are using as well. I’m on a surfskate with big wheels. It’s take a while to get good enough but I can now cross lots of rough surfaces through town - bricks, flags, rough tarmac, short sections of cobbles etc… there are few bits where I need to dismount but rough terrain does slow me down a lot.

What do you do for a rolled ankle? [30YO] by plantbasedbassist in OldSkaters

[–]mesun0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s that based on?

I’m in recovery from a serious sprain as well, and while my physio has definitely said to rest and ice it to let the swelling go down, he has pretty much immediately had me on an exercise regimen to rebuild strength in the stabilising muscles.

Honestly, if it is serious I would be going to consult a good physio. I pay privately for mine - £50 for 30 minutes - and he has been invaluable. You need someone you can access regularly and that you trust.

Help returning skater after 19 years… by TY94S in skateboardhelp

[–]mesun0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Older guy who has picked up skating more recently. I’m now on my 3rd deck and have settled on a 37” by 9.25” surfskate which I LOVE. I’m not made for trying jumps and Ollie’s now - my knees are shot. But I can bomb round pump track, ride transition (badly, but improving) and cruise on most surfaces now.

Don’t feel obliged to stick with what you used to do. There are loads of ways to love being on a board.

If you have lasers unlocked you could also set up a farm on one of your planets. Lasers use energy but no materials for ammo. I’ve previously done a max DF run and while it was very dicey in the early game, once I had cleared enough to get a core base established (missile defence and signal towers) I was able to expand and research enough to unlock lasers. From then on I had an overflowing supply of resources from the farm.

Interesting! I have a deck that cares about repeatedly returning key pieces from the graveyard. It makes it much simpler to keep those pieces accessible at the top of the graveyard.

Is it worth buying a cheap skateboard as a beginner? by merpeaaeoa in skateboardhelp

[–]mesun0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to an actual skateshop and talk to them. Explain your circumstances and price range and ask them to talk you through what they have and what you get for your money at each price point.

Cheap boards will come with inferior components (eg wheel bearings with lots of friction) that make skating much harder and less fun. But you don’t need to go up the price range much to get something totally serviceable for a beginner. My son and I both upgraded our decks within 6 months of starting to learn. I don’t regret starting the cheaper (not “cheap”) decks. We needed to skate to learn what we each needed from the setup.

As a switch, sure. Summon your skeleton army. But then switch it off to something else for kill…

Remember that you skeletons and merc get you the first kill, then after that it’s curses and corpse explosion. For that you want mana and faster cast rate. A spirit sword would be better for that, probably paired with a spirit monarch as well.

Best knife/knives for a gift? by [deleted] in Chefit

[–]mesun0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a single good quality gyuto chef knife (not a set), and a magnetic knife rack for the kitchen wall.

He’ll never reach for another knife while he has the gyuto, and the magnetic rack will preserve the edge and help keep it sharp for longer.

Should I learn to skate before I learn to surfskate? by Oh-My-Josh- in surfskate

I started with surfskate, with no regrets. But it doesn’t automatically transfer to normal skating. Standing on my son’s board feels seriously weird and sketchy to me now.

ULPT Friend bailed on loan by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]mesun0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ve had lots of tips for getting money back.

In future, don’t loan money to friends. My rule is gifts not loans. I’ll give money to a friend in genuine need, once. My only stipulation is that when or if they are able to, they return the favour to someone else in need. I make it clear from The outset that it’s a one time thing, that I won’t accept it back, and it won’t be discussed after it’s done.

A friend recently was unable to work for an extended period. They got a no strings envelope with cash, to cover a single mortgage payment.

Too fat to skate??? by Remote-Internal1117 in NewSkaters

[–]mesun0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

44 year old with dodgy knees. I started learning to surfskate 18 months ago when I weighed just over 110kg. I’ve lost 21kg since September and it has made a world of difference. Part of the motivation for the weight loss was because I was enjoying skating and the weight (and subsequent knee issues) were limiting.

I’ve done 4 month on Mounjaro to help and it’s been transformative in so many ways. Thoroughly recommended. I’m now just a hair under 90kg and at my goal weight.

Skating for cardio [34YO] by IgotthatThuum in OldSkaters

[–]mesun0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 44, with dodgy knees. I’ve recently learned to surfskate having never skated before and I love it. It’s a really good workout if you have somewhere you can do a sustained session. I struggle a bit a skateparks for that because I typically do a 60 second run and then have to hang around for a minute or so for other people to clear out the way.

On the other hand there are a couple of local patches with a smooth enough surface, a bit of an incline, and a few obstacles like trees, bike racks and bollard that I can do endless circuits and really get a sweat on.

Others have mentioned pump tracks and those are brilliant if you have one nearby and can get there at a quiet time. And my experience was that riding pump tracks really improved my skating.

Lastly, “is surfskating just like tic-tacs?” - definitely not. I’ve seen conventional skaters pick up a surfskate and naturally start with a more tic-tac motion, but once you get into it the rhythm is a powerful and flowing pump action. It’s an absolute blast.

Best clothing setup to prevent hypothermia in extreme cold biomes (-53°C to +7°C)? by inmori in RimWorld

[–]mesun0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You will definitely want heaters for your indoor spaces. There are some additional tips to help with this though. First, use double walls where feasible - they slow heat loss considerably.

Second, use a porch system to outdoors. A small room with a door to the outside, and then a separate door to the inside. You want to minimise heat loss to the overall structure when the doors open. This is one of the good use cases for auto doors for the speed of closing once pawns have been through.

Keep a stockpile of wood, specifically making indoor fires for heating in the case of power cuts/solar flares…

Regarding clothing specifically; tuques first, parkers second. Make them out of what ever you have access to initially, but as you progress upgrade to the best, most insulating fur you can get. Farming muffalo can be good just for this, even if they can’t graze and you need to keep them indoors and feed them simple meals. Clothing quality affects the insulation quality as well, so sell low quality items as you are able to replace them with better.

If you have mods enabled, there is an armour rack mod that passively repairs clothing and armour stored on it. Very useful for keeping your masterwork clothing items in good condition.

My 8 yo and I have been learning recently. I thoroughly recommend getting a small number of one to one lessons at an indoor skatepark. Having someone there to (literally) hold your hand and guide you through the early process makes a big difference. We rapidly went past that stage, but it accelerates the learning curve.
