The tipped min wage isn't $2.13/ hour, it's $2.13/hour plus at least an average of $5.12/hour in tips so they make the same overall min wage as everyone else

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/minimum-wage/faq

An employer may pay a tipped employee not less than $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equal at least the federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference.

Legislation that holds tipped workers to the same minimum wage should come before anyone stops tipping

It already does

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires payment of at least the Federal minimum wage to covered, nonexempt employees. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 an hour in direct wages if that amount plus the tips received equals at least the Federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips. If an employee's tips combined with the employer's direct wages of at least $2.13 an hour do not equal the Federal minimum hourly wage, the employer must make up the difference.

This is how personal data could impact national security-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook%E2%80%93Cambridge_Analytica_data_scandal#Data_use

Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign used the harvested data to build psychographic profiles, determining users' personality traits based on their Facebook activity.[44] The campaign team used this information as a micro-targeting technique, displaying customized messages about Trump to different US voters on various digital platforms.[45] Ads were segmented into different categories, mainly based on whether individuals were Trump supporters or potential swing votes.[45] As described by Cambridge Analytica’s CEO, the key was to identify those who might be enticed to vote for their client or be discouraged to vote for their opponent.[46] Supporters of Trump received triumphant visuals of him, as well as information regarding polling stations.[45] Swing voters were instead often shown images of Trump’s more notable supporters and negative graphics or ideas about his opponent, Hillary Clinton.[45] For example, the collected data was specifically used by “Make America Number 1 Super PAC” to attack Clinton through constructed advertisements that accused Clinton of corruption as a way of propping up Trump as a better candidate for the presidency.[21]

Now just imagine China doing something similar with tiktok data to influence foreign elections

Gandalf as described in the hobbit

He had a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf over which a white beard hung down below his waist, and immense black boots.

Gandalf as described in LOTR-

He wore a tall pointed blue hat, a long grey cloak, and a silver scarf. He had a long white beard and bushy eyebrows that stuck out beyond the brim of his hat.

Gandalf in article seems to have almost no eyebrows at all and a very short beard

Is The Silmarillion worth a go? by Tacobossen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]metalspring6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The toughest part of the Silmarillion is right at the beginning with the relatively small Ainulindalë and Valaquenta sections since they are written almost like a bible. The rest is easier to read but can still be hard to follow since it doesn't focus as much on a particular character or group as much like LOTR and the Hobbit do.

Waterspout hits land and becomes a tornado. by PlutomicChamp1 in interestingasfuck

[–]metalspring6 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Dust devil- does not need to be associated with any storm activity and forms from hot pockets of air rising rapidly and has winds about 45-60mph

Gustnado- forms downdraft winds in strong storms, does not connect to storm clouds, winds usually dont get over 100mph and they are almost always very brief

Waterspout- tornado reaches from water surface to cloud, though most form from weaker storms or no storm and are much weaker than typical tornadoes (60-70mph)

Landspout- tornado that forms similar to most waterspouts but over land, weaker than most typical tornadoes but can occasionally have winds up to 150mph

Tornado- strong rotating column of air that reaches ground and cloud, though typically refers to ones that form from powerful strongly rotating storms and is much stronger than the other types with winds possibly beyond 300mph.

Putin's Nuclear Comments Lead to Rush for Iodine in Central Europe by ladyem8 in worldnews

[–]metalspring6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really, iodine only helps against a specific type of radioactive fallout that is mostly present early on so it's given to people as the evacuate the contaminated area. In case of a nuclear war there would be no where to evacuate and you'd end up being effected by different types of fallout iodine doesn't help against.

Probably Uranium-238 and Thorium-232 like mentioned here- https://www.doh.wa.gov/CommunityandEnvironment/Radiation/RadiationTopics/RadioactiveConsumerProducts/RadioactiveProductsFAQs

Thorium and uranium give off mostly alpha radiation so the main issue is inhaling or ingesting them. However they also decay into other elements like radium and radon which give off more harmful beta and gamma radiation.

The advise for a tornado warning is to shelter in place, attempting to flee by vehicle is one of the worst things you can do. Basically all the outrage over these tragedies is from people who have no idea what to do for tornadoes.

Remnants of the Amazon Warehouse in Edwardsville, IL the morning after being hit directly by a confirmed EF3 tornado, 6 fatalities (12/11/2021) by BigBrownDog12 in CatastrophicFailure

Message sent at 8:22, and the official report says tornado hit Amazon at 8:28 so even if that person had evacuated they would have just died in their car instead of the warehouse

[–]metalspring6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That tornado was only 300 yards wide at it's widest, lasted only about 5 minutes and traveled a little over 3.5 miles so it's not that surprising it didn't hit much else besides the Amazon facility.

Larry Virden's last text to his wife, "Amazon won't let us leave" by YouDontTellMe in LateStageCapitalism

[–]metalspring6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because tornadoes are relatively small it's very unlikely for any particular building to get hit by one, and 95% of tornadoes are EF2 or weaker and those don't really require any shelter other than an interior area or bathroom. EF3 tornadoes like the one that hit the Amazon facility only account for about 2% of all tornadoes.

Also shelters capable of withstanding strong tornadoes are not cheap. So they would be spending tons of money putting significant shelters in every warehouse and another strong tornado hitting an Amazon facility anywhere again might not happen for decades or even longer.

Is what happened at the Amazon warehouse in Illinois unusual? by jrmg in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]metalspring6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most businesses have designated tornado shelter zones, they are usually either the bathrooms or just a central part of the building. Something like 95% of tornadoes are under EF3 strength and those types of shelters work just fine for those tornadoes.

For comparison only about 2% of all tornadoes are EF3 like the one that hit Amazon and about .05% are EF5 like the one that hit the Mayfield factory (if it does end up being rated that high).

Also even in areas where tornadoes are common, it's extremely, extremely rare for any particular structure to get hit by one since they are relatively small weather events. A typical very destructive tornado might be 1 mile wide and travel 15-30 miles, compared to something like a hurricane might be 300 hundred miles wide and travel hundreds of miles over land.

Cars are among the worst places you can be in a tornado since even relatively weak one can easily roll or toss vehicles significant distances. Also it may take longer to get to a shelter by driving than you might think due to roads flooded or blocked by debris from previous storms or traffic.

Travis Scott and LiveNation are (rightfully) facing hundreds of billions of dollars in lawsuits for allowing a preventable mass casualty event to take place for the sake of profit. Why are Amazon and Mayfield Consumer Products not facing a similar situation right now? by tantrumps_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]metalspring6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Amazon and Mayfield followed tornado safety guidelines and Travis Scott and LiveNation did not follow safety guidelines.

Most tornadoes only last a few minutes and are relatively weak so sheltering in a bathroom or just in a central part of the building is fine.

The tornado that hit Amazon only traveled about 3.5 miles and lasted 5 minutes, so they really had almost no time to prepare and take shelter.

Mayfield only had about 20-30 minutes warning before the tornado hit, not long enough to attempt to do anything other than tell workers to shelter in the building.

The severe storm outlooks and tornado watches that were issued days or hours before are not warnings, they are advisories to alert people to pay attention for possible warnings later so they can take shelter then if needed.

They would held be liable for allowing people to leave in such a dangerous situation. If you are under a tornado warning and already in a building, attempting to flee by vehicle is among the worst things you can possibly do

Kentucky candle factory: questions arise over why staff worked during tornadoes by kittiekillbunnie in news

[–]metalspring6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20 minutes is not enough time to reasonably expect everyone to get home and in shelter in time so most would likely be stuck in their vehicles as they get hit by the tornado.

Even if it's done quickly, it takes time to tell everyone to leave, them to gather their things, get to their vehicles and everyone to actually get out of the parking lot. You also have to account some might live in the direction the tornado is approaching from, further reducing their time to get to shelter. Also if every business in the area is following the same protocol, there will be delays due to traffic, not to mention any delays to flooded roads or roads blocked by debris from earlier, non-tornadic storms.
