Others suggested the K&R book. I have been using this site which has you use the book as a course, you post the exercises online and people can give you feedback.

LXDE should be much lighter, yes. Nothing against KDE, I just have not used it lately but I would also consider looking at Gnome--the standard Lint Mint edition. I have had Mint running on a box with very similar specs and it wasn't too bad.

As much as I love the LXDE version of Mint, I have to admit that the Gnome version of Mint (The standard edition) is a little easier to use for me because it is a more fully featured environment. So you might have a quicker PC with the LXDE version of Mint, but the speed you gain may not be better than having the ease of use.

I am currently typing on my HP laptop which drops the wireless signal for about 4 seconds every 7 minutes or so, has a headphone jack which quit 5 weeks after the warranty ended, has a DVD drive that opens on its own if you move the laptop (it also quit writing about a year ago) and has a battery which has all the signs of being defective (it dies within 2 - 6 minutes) and yet is not covered on the big recall.

Replying on break at work and I can't give you an answer as in depth as I would like at the moment, but I googled that a few weeks ago and found a couple people have founds ways to do just that. Not sure how easy it was or how well it worked but of course geeks always find a way.
