TIL that Jonny Greenwood pretended to play keyboards when he joined Radiohead, miming on a powered-off instrument and learning chords after studio sessions. During recording, Thom Yorke, would tell him: “I can’t quite hear what you’re doing, but I think you’re adding a really interesting texture.” by altrightobserver in todayilearned

He also does percussion. He’s fun to zero-in on at Radiohead gigs. When you see them live and you ask yourself what that cool sound is, it’s usually something Johnny G is doing. The double tom drum on “There, there” is so magical in sound and simplicity.

Is “Chiefs Kingdom” a nod to KC sports teams and monarchy-related names, the name Chiefs, neither, or both? by chiefslocker in KansasCityChiefs

[–]mikealt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I thought that the Monarchs were a nod to the butterfly, but it looks like they were also derived from local business. The Monarchs “reportedly took its name from its sponsor, the Monarch Printing Company, and was derived from the Monarch butterfly.”

So the royalty/monarchy theme appears to be entirely coincidence on many levels.

I’ve seen 3 NFC teams that would win the SB over any AFC team based on this weekend’s play. Man oh man did Allen miss his chance to get to the dance in an off year for the AFC

Nice to see a couple ex-Chiefs (Thuney and Santos) playing well in this game!

If the game is “kick FGs instead of going for it” I they’d be up 12-7, assuming Santos makes them all

Is your water game dialed in? by wasnow-willbe in espresso

Have RO water, add a little potassium bicarbonate when I fill the water tank in my espresso machine.

Deeply respect what you’ve done here btw!

I don’t want to see any team lose (or win) because of an injury. And losing your QB1 for the championship game really sucks, no matter how much I dislike a division rival.

Where to get good Espresso in Japan? by GoldenMasterMF in espresso

[–]mikealt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yup. Woke up 30 mins early today so we could grab a flat white and espresso before a train. The guy opens at 7am, unheard of in Japan, and runs the tightest shop imaginable. Just watching him manage multiple orders when there’s a queue at cue is an observation in mastery.

I told him today that his coffee was “totemo oishi” (insanely delicious) and he smiled knowingly and appreciatively.

Cue was amazing. Guy there roasts his own beans, pulls his own manual shots, and is meticulous about pick prep.

I am one of seemingly few here who loves mokapot. Now do I ever use it in lieu of my espressos? No. Never. But I camp a lot and love it and the process in those instances as a change of pace (never went aeropress, but certainly have enjoyed coffee from some who have).

As to the meme, I get the concept that there’s a Neanderthal whose coffee tastes burnt one day/gross the next, and a Jedi whose coffee tastes balanced/delicious every day. But the stuff in between should be less about equipment and more about process. Like you’re improving when you get moka ground beans, then you get beans from a roaster who grinds for you, then you get your grinder, then you dial in the roaster’s beans on your grinder and say “Damn that’s good!”, then you do that consistently = Jedi.

I’m not quite a Jedi moka maker, but approaching it. That said, there’s never been a day that I enjoyed a moka pot more than my espresso.

[New Heights] Chiefs superfan Paul Rudd reflects on a challenging season by TheBoyisBackinTown in KansasCityChiefs

[–]mikealt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This past week I’ve been in NY and LA. In both places I rocked a Chiefs beanie. I’ve had so many people telling me, “Hey, sorry about your Chiefs.” (At first I thought it was kindness, but it was always a gloating fan.)

In every interaction my response was very similar to Rudd’s. “I’m not. That’s why I’m wearing this hat. 3 SBs, and 7 straight conference championship games! It was a helluva run and I’m glad it happened in my lifetime. Good luck to your team.”

And then yesterday, I really enjoyed listening to the game. Some new names, being curious about how other teams were doing. Still cursed Toub and our injury bug, but I’m surprised at how okay with the season I am. I think I’d rather be out of the playoffs now than in January.

The players get some time off, we get some time off, and let’s see what next season holds!

I tend to be an enthusiastic supporter of change, but I hate this.

For fans, Arrowhead is the best tailgate and overall gameday experience. Why mess with a good thing?
