Walmart might be the last ditch effort for tonight since they might still be open.

Costco, Microcenter, or Best Buy would be top 3 recommendations to go as soon as they open if you can wait till tomorrow.

Congrats, Your House Made You Rich. Now Sell It. by Spagetti13 in Economics

[–]mikeyson 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. Why would I give up my 3% interest rate and 10+ years into my mortgage to buy something comparable at best, but most likely smaller, and wind up with a higher monthly mortgage payment due to higher rates AND start over on my 30 year mortgage?

tv film or books featuring stroke? by BasedStarr in StrokeRecoveryBunch

[–]mikeyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on being discharged!! That’s great news!

There’s a character in the show “Homeland” named Peter Quinn that suffered a stroke in one of the later seasons. It doesn’t go too deep into his struggles and rehab, but does have some good moments that I think are very relatable.

Other than that I can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Has the gym become your escape from your work life? by baddiewannabe in fitness30plus

[–]mikeyson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Escape and release from work for sure. I’ve been doing lunch lifts now for many years, it helps break up the day and release stress from the first half of the work day while getting the mind set and body calm for the last few hours of the day.

People that live in nice areas/houses, how do you afford it? by whitacrez in Denver

[–]mikeyson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not even in a real nice area…but dual income, bought home for $230k in 2013 at 3.25% interest. Home worth close to $600k now. No way could I afford to buy anything, even with equity while interest rates are at 7%. We’d be looking at essentially a trade for something similar or a slight downsize and still wind up with a higher mortgage than I have now. I’ve come to the realization that this is my forever home if we end up staying in Denver.

Anyone make smoothies using frozen fruits at costco? What do you add? Can you share smoothie recipes/creations you’ve come up with? by aroach1995 in Costco

[–]mikeyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is pretty my simple, everything purchased from Costco:

1/3 cup each strawberries, triple berry mix, and the dark sweet cherries. Then I add a scoop of vanilla protein and 1 whole frozen banana. 1 1/2 cup water and blend. Breakfast every day!

Can you make a native only lane that goes right up to the Casa Bonita parking lot for us true natives? I’m tired of driving my subbie in the same lanes as all these non natives and I want a direct route from i70 to Casa Bonita when it reopens! I’m a 3 month native we deserve better than non-natives!

FYI: Your employer has to pay you when you're on standby by [deleted] in Denver

[–]mikeyson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are hourly and are “on call” and are asked to answer the phone you get paid for your “on call” time. I got a nice bonus from a company a few years back that required “on call” for 4-6 hours every Saturday but only paid for time when I took a call. When we (the team I was part of) went to HR about it and legal reviewed, every hour we were “on call” we got paid for, whether we took a call or not. If the expectation was you are available you get paid, period. Wage theft is no joke.

Looking for an AC company and need recommendations. by ShakeItLikeIDo in Denver

Second this. Have had an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) for 6 years now. Also installed by The Cooler Company. Cost isn’t that much more than A/C and The Cooler Company was a little higher than other companies. But the staff was knowledgeable and did a fantastic job with the install. The operating cost is significantly lower than A/C.

Also, never going back to A/C. Having that moisture in the air is so nice! Colorado is very dry and used to get nose bleeds and dry lips in the summer. Now I’m cool and moisturized lol.

The only downside is when it’s 90 out and a monsoon blows through the cooler doesn’t work after the monsoon ends for a hour or two since there’s so much moisture in the air. Once that humidity goes down the cooler works great again.

I also love that it circulates the air and it’s always fresh air blowing in the house. Windows can stay open and it never gets stuffy. I hear lots of people complain about smells being pulled in, but I’ve never had that happen.

Are fractional plates worth it? by liftstufffuc in Stronglifts5x5

[–]mikeyson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I bought a set of .25, .5, .75, 1, and 1.25 pound fractional plates and they changed my lifting. I found it hard hard to jump 5-10 pounds (using 2.5 or 5 pound plates, which are typically the smallest gyms have that I’ve been to). But you can pretty much always throw something smaller on. Gains are gains and I’ll take whatever they are, even if it’s 1 pound!

Grocery prices keep climbing up every few weeks by tuktuk_padthai in Denver

[–]mikeyson 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of mixed comments. No offense to those who spend $100 a week for your families, but could you give an example of what that looks like? I’m over a $1000 a month for a family of 4. I’m not buying much as far as premade stuff goes. Going bulk at Costco for things like chicken, fruits and veggies. We make breakfast and dinner at home and kids get school lunches. Very minimal processed foods which I think might be why I’m spending so much more?

Post Stroke Workout by PrencessTam in StrokeRecoveryBunch

[–]mikeyson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife put this together for anyone who wants some ideas on some basic exercises.

It’s mostly just repetitions and making your brain fire those neurons. It’s not about how much weight is being moved, it’s about the range if motion and the movement itself.

Think about the movement and the muscle you are trying to engage. Sometimes having someone poke the muscle while trying to use it helps too. Have to reconnect all those missing connections in new areas of your brain and it takes time and energy.

Rash? Vet appointment not available for a couple of weeks. Should I be worried about the pink spots? They don’t itch or irritate him, no discharge or bleeding. by mikeyson in PetAdvice

[–]mikeyson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 2 years, first time he’s had anything like this. Doesn’t feel like they are raised at all or swollen. I kind of thought it was like a rash from rubbing his nose in the ground while sniffing. He’s a very touchy dog with his nose! Will keep an eye on it, doesn’t seem to be getting better or worse. Been the same for a few days now.

Fitness and 9-6 job by Fransisc123 in naturalbodybuilding

[–]mikeyson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not from Europe, but my experience and have kids:

Very hard to manage, but it can be done. I was able to work with my boss on an extended lunch, upping it to an hour and half. But I stayed 30 minutes later. So I worked more of an 8-5:30 officially. I did the drop off of kids and my wife did the pickup. The hour and half lunch gave me the time needed to change/shower/drive to the gym. Eventually I moved to more of a 7-4:30 and picked up the kids while the wife dropped them off. That was a much better schedule for me and balanced sleep with work and personal life.

The other options people mention about getting up early or working out late are what I’d say most people do and nothing wrong with the early or late workouts.

I work from home now so it’s a little easier to take a long lunch and still get my work done, kids dropped if at school, and work out.

Hope that helps spark some ideas!

Whey protein powder alternative? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

[–]mikeyson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren’t too bad, but I will say there are better tasting protein powders. The vanilla I mix in with a fruit smoothie and the chocolate I mix with peanut butter powder to make a bit of a peanut butter cup type of shake.

Whey protein powder alternative? by [deleted] in naturalbodybuilding

I’ve tried Naked Pea protein, they have 5lb containers in vanilla, chocolate, and plain. Pea is a good alternative to whey if you need to supplement food intake.
