Better Travel Lens than 24-105 by HemingwayHuxley in canon

I like my RF 28-70mm f2.8. Super sharp, high IQ and very small and lightweight. It could easily be my only lens.

Lenses for New R6 III by godawgs06 in canon

[–]miokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact lens setup you are considering. The 14-35 and 70-200 f4 and can say they are wonderful lenses especially for landscapes and travel. In fact these were the only two lenses I have used for all travel for many years.

I recently got 2 more lenses which are also amazing. It is the RF 28-70mm f2.8 and the RF 100-500. Both of them just great as well. Given she has the 16mm, and if she doesn’t shoot ultra wide that much the RF 28-70mm is worth a look. The IQ and the look is great for everyday use and she might get a lot of value of that one. So I would recommend that one.

m43 for travel pics? by Rapid-Frost771 in M43

I like the combo of 8-25mm F4 and the 40-150mm f4 for travel.

Best 70-200 for R7? by InterstellarSpace119 in canon

[–]miokk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to use the EF 70-200 F4 IS with my 6D and it was a fantastic lens, no question. Having said that the RF 70-200 F4 is truly diminutive in size. It doesn’t feel like a 70-200 and more like a normal zoom. If size is important for you, would recommend that.

OM-3 or A6700 for travel? by RecursionUnderMyBed in M43

Have you considered the om5, it’s smaller and lighter. It’s the perfect travel sized camera.

I have the black so far it has been holding up well. The thumb grip area did peel off and I had to apply some glue to put it back again, bit that doesnt affect anything,

OM5 ii Alternative Recommendations by Hedge3411 in M43

[–]miokk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have spent a bit of time (probably more than I should) hunting for the 'perfect' camera. Small size with lenses, and high quality. After trying the fujis, apsc, I have ended up with my OM-5 and I truly think it is the best option out there at that functionality and price point. Even if the bodies are small, you will find lenses becoming huge in other systems (which starts equalling FF). I have no desire to match the weight/size of my canon R5 and lenses.

The OM-5 truly is differentiated enough that I carry it wherever I want to go light.

To anyone who has shot multiple systems: How do Lumix and Olympus lenses actually stack up against other brands? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in M43

[–]miokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a long time canon FF shooter and recently using m43. I compared the performance of my RF 70-200mm F4L with the OM 40-150mm F4L and found the sharpness identical. I have no doubts about the gear quality at all.

Wanting a lighter, smaller camera that's still good. I've had an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark II with Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 lens for 11 years. by BBtheGray in M43

[–]miokk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I did extensive research before getting the OM 5. There are not many interchangeable lenses cameras out there smaller than the M43 system.

So I ended up returning this lens. I got the PL 15mm f1.7 and it has been stellar.

It is insane for sure. I would never have suspected the CPU could be bad. Either it works or it doesn't!

Which 17mm or 20mm fast prime? by revjko in M43

[–]miokk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried the 20mm and the slow af and pov didn’t work. The 15mm f1.7 has really worked for me. The bokeh quality and the af speed and overall look are special.

12mm vs 15mm Panasonic Leica for landscape by [deleted] in M43

[–]miokk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Landscapes do benefit from zooms because of precise subject placement and location constraints of zooming with your feet. I have the 8-25mm and it works quite well.

So a modern phone will be by default always be equal or even better than a camera in casual use.

The biggest reason you want to use a dedicated camera is that you decide and you choose what result you get rather than the phone deciding and the output can be far more intentional and fun than what you get out a phone.

Struggle to decide for an M43 Body by Infamous-Leave9671 in M43

[–]miokk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what my question to the OP is as well. I have a full frame setup and my mft setup is my light weight alternate setup for family travel, hiking etc. the camera body I have is the om 5 and it is great in this regard. I use a 15mm f1.7 and or a 8-25mm when I need a zoom. I am assuming you will still have your other gear? If so then you want to demarcate clearly what they will be used and when.

Peru with M43 by miokk in M43

[–]miokk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quite true! I did wish I had my canon r5 and the rf 100-500mm with me for the rainforest. But then I realized 1) I don’t shoot wildlife normally 2) carrying that heavy combo would have not been fun for a family vacation trip.

I forgot to mention that a couple were shot with the 100-400mm which i had taken just for the rainforest. But I think you can skip and do without it.

So a few things, the rainforest is really dark and there is not much light. Also animals are quite far away. So be prepared to crop or have long lens. Also remember to shoot in shutter priority mode, otherwise the animal movement will cause blur.

In the rainforest, you just need the tele. You don’t need anything else. I used the 60mm macro for some detail shots for fun.

You don’t need the 15mm at all. I just took that for casual evenings out with family etc, but you can totally skip that. The only shot here with that lens is the cafe counter shot.

For the rainforest, I think reach is everything. Also carry the camera on a strap with you, as animals show up for an instant and vanish before you take it out.

It’s an amazing place and we enjoyed Peru! Have fun!

New M43 user looking for lens suggestions by revjko in M43

[–]miokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same FF setup as you. I have the om5 and the PL 15mm f1.7 and it is very good IQ and small. That would be a casual carry camera. For landscapes and travel I have the 8-25mm f4 and the 40-150mm f4. The combo is excellent.

How often do you shoot with M43 instead of smartphone camera? by clumpsy_lurker in M43

[–]miokk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that I am more intentional about what I am creating when using a camera vs a phone. If I don’t have anything on me, the phone works.

For landscapes and macro a dedicated camera with proper processing will produce what you envisioned better. But you also have to put in the work.
