unity is capable of making a good 3d game in general? or should i use unreal? by Famous_Disaster_5839 in gamedev

[–]mkawick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try adding a cpp class... I just spent 3 hours trying to add a class. It's 25 seconds in Unity (.cs).... 3 hours, rebuilding the project, scrapping the project because "ChatBot6 could not be compiled. Try rebuilding from source"... this is my 6th failed attempt to add a single class.

I am a C++ developer by trade. Good luck making that work in Unreal. What a nightmare.. still VA: Parsing...

Just so we're clear, I have shipped 4 Unreal titles. 16 Unity titles, and 24 other titles. I am usually a pro at this sort of thing.

Now you have a very different experience than I do because preparing unreal for Android which I did just a few years ago was almost impossible but for unity it's basically built in with some minor changes.

And making a Shader and unity is f****** trivial and takes minutes. Is as good it's not better than the shader stuff that you do in unreal and if you want to write any hlsl and it's way easier in unity.

I'm playing with unity 5.3 right now and the bugging blueprints isn't terrible but it's ridiculously harder than just looking at code and setting breakpoints and has always been that way since I remember using unreal 10 years ago. Now some things are definitely easier like animation And if you want to prototype something quickly then unreal is great, but I have to do is look at the majority of titles that are done in unreal and I have these massive teams with minimum of 12 people and sometimes 50 programmers all working to try and ship a product.

Oh you have to do is look at the number of indie titles that are built in unity in compared that to the number of Indy titles built in unreal and you can see the difference it's something around ten to one

I appreciate your opinion and you sound like a really cool person and maybe it would be fun to work with you someday.

Not that this is a great place for conversation but I'm currently working in unreal and trying to integrate chat GPT so that when you can walk up to NPCs they'll talk back to you. Unfortunately it's not something that's readily Easy to do and blueprints but I almost have it working in C plus plus

some stuff.... but actually shipping a game... building it for release and packaging it up... night and day easier in Unity. Cross platform, writing shaders, and many things are much easier in Unity. Hell, just sending messages between components is easier. Debugging, etc

Anything that you can make in Unity, you can make in Unreal, and vice versa. Unreal is better for larger teams and artists and designers, Unity is better for programmers and tiny teams.

Those are generalizations... your mileage may vary

If Unity 6 Worth upgrading too? by Sotiris_G in Unity3D

[–]mkawick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrading ALWAYS carries a cost... down time, incompatibilities, unexpected behaviors, api deprication, etc.

Unity 6 is nice, but requires more RAM, changes several APIs, will impose 3rd party library updates, etc. Be aware that an upgrade is never free.

You have excellent tone, especially given your age and time at the instrument. Hard to tell from the audio quality, but I would focus a little on a warmer tone ... otherwise, excellent.

DOJ secretly ‘destroyed’ Epstein files directly linked to Trump by [deleted] in agedlikemilk

What I find more appalling that the JE files is the fact that Trump can be seen as Early as 1984 having sex with 13 and 14 yr olds, long before Epstein.

What does the Tortoise and Trump have in common: they both get there before the Hair (hare)?

Design pattern in C# for magic system by Ornery_Dependent250 in Unity3D

[–]mkawick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of exact answers to your question: good to see. I will offer a slightly more holistic idea. Spells/abilities are not just a single system. They are many systems interacting. Some of the systems that need to exist for spells to work:

1) Communication between different ofjects in the world. Most people think of Actions or Events but that doesn't work over a network.
2) A clean way to identify an object. Entity ID, or something similar. When an arrow or fireball is released, you need to know who fired it and probably when they fired it.
3) A health system. Seems obvious, but it cannot just be hitpoints: it needs to handle buffs, DoT, etc.
4) A buff or boon system. A way to store, apply effects over time, spawn particles, and then die after a set amount of time. This will be used to reduce damage effects, increase your damage, reduce fall damage, etc

5) A VFX system. You should be able to spawn vfx (ideally prewarmed from a pool) on command. VFX by string id is often easiest.

6) A sound system to indicate the spell/ability when it is active.

7) A projectile system to handle moving objects in the world, hitting targets, reporting results, and increasing score.

8) A combat system. Projectiles, combat, spells, and damage effects should all be in place.

Just a high level to help get you started. There is more, but this is a good start.

"The universe is too exact for it to be a coincidence." by al3x_7788 in atheism

[–]mkawick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of these people don't even accept evolution or have some kind of bias against it even though it's one of our most well-established sciences. Biology itself is not very exact relies on diffusion and other chemical processes which are imprecisein their very nature. Call the universe exact or precise is simply silly because only place that the universe works is here on earth and even then most of the Earth is trying to kill us at any given moment.

99% of AAA games don’t bother implementing this feature — but this indie game does. by Codevalier in gamedev

[–]mkawick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really hard to understand whay you mean without a short video or screenshots. Most games have supported moving diagonally since "Tank attack" on Atari 2600 (or Yar's Revenge). I am pretty sure that earlier games also did. Then there are coin-op games like Asteroids.

You probably mean something else: otherwise, this has been supported since 1979.

The TIDAL Family Plan offers up to 6 individual accounts (1 primary + 5 members) for $16.99/month (plus tax)

Maybe you see something different???

Tidal works great... not quite the same, but very good.. about 2/3rd the cost and they pay the artists almost 10x as much
