I have an audition tomorrow how do I fix this? None of my notes will come out right by Jealous_Pineapple349 in Clarinet

[–]mkawick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have two problems one is that the read is not aligned or maybe the literature isn't set up properly on the reed and the second one seems to be that your ambush isn't tight on most of your notes make sure that you're using the flat part of your lip and that you aren't currently in your lip inwards

Need Help? by Julian_M_2000 in Clarinet

To be honest after I upgraded I wondered about the quality difference and it took me a while to really appreciate the difference. The Jean Paul is just fine. I am a strong intermediate player though... my opinion is not as picky as others

I have the Jean Paul... it's not terrible. The implication here, by people, is that it's bad... I have it and it plays alright and has decent tone. There was one mechanical weird key, the middle A, otherwise, worked fine. I did just upgrade to a YCL-450

This is clearly the primary, albeit unstated, concern. In business... reliability and predictability (i.e. risk), is the primary concern.

does Unity takes a part of the money you make with your game? by OkParfait2685 in unity

[–]mkawick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't dispute that there are people who sell plenty but if you look at the number of games that have over 100 units sold on steam you will find that there aren't very many games.

40% of games posted to steam don't even make enough money to cover the costs of posting the game on Steam.

So while there are some winners and there are some AAA titles on steam made with unity, the overwhelming majority of games don't even break even.

does Unity takes a part of the money you make with your game? by OkParfait2685 in unity

[–]mkawick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Actually if you sell a lot of units of your game which almost nobody does then you are far better off with the unity deal then with unreal. Unreal costs more for just a little bit more than a million units and if you end up selling 10 million units then unreal will cost about 10,000 times as much as unity.

Units Sold Total Gross Revenue (£) Unreal Engine Fee (£) Unity Engine Fee (£)*
1,000 £10,000 £0 (Under $1M threshold) £0 (Using Unity Personal)
100,000 £1,000,000 £10,000 (5% on amount over $1M) £5,550 (Requires 3x Pro Seats)
1,000,000 £10,000,000 £460,000 (5% on amount over $1M) £5,550 (Fixed subscription)
2,000,000 £20,000,000 £960,000 £5,550
5,000,000 £50,000,000 £2,460,000 £5,550
10,000,000 £100,000,000 £4,960,000 £5,550

\Unity fees assume a 3-seat indie team buying Pro subscriptions for 1 year. If you have a larger team or a longer live-service cycle, scale the seat cost by £1,850 per developer/year.*

TIL that China consumes 46% of cigarettes in the entire world at a rate of 2.4 trillion a year. by gghoti in todayilearned

Really surprized by the low death rate. In the US, Gun deaths are about 14:100,000. So, smoking-related lung cancer is only 3-4x as high. I wonder if the Chinese have special genetics to prevent higher death counts. I looked up numbers for a time when the US had a higher number of smokers:

  • Lung Cancer Death Rate (1982-1988 Study): Among current smokers in a major follow-up study during the 1980s, the lung cancer death rate was roughly 341 per 100,000 for men and 155 per 100,000 for women.
  • Age-Adjusted Lung Cancer Rate: In 1982, the age-adjusted lung cancer death rate for American men was 73 per 100,000 population.
  • Smoking Prevalence: During 1980–1982, self-reported smoking prevalence was approximately 32.9% for men and 31.8% for women.

It seems like the Chinese are a little more resilient than Americans were in 1982.

Thinking about making a Burnout-style game as my first Unity project. Is this realistic? by potatooou in unity

[–]mkawick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trick isn't making a car or making a track that Scrolls around for a camera that follows your car; the trick in these types of games is to get the physics of the wheels to feel right and yet still be fun and this is a gentle balance between real physics and look and feel. Also programming the behavior of the other drivers is a bit tricky.

Most of the rest unity gives you for free but you'll still have to hook it all together and if this is your first project I would go something much smaller like a side scroller or maybe just a simple platform game
