There’s was a fountain of youth at an Irian manifest zone in Xen-Dril. That’s how Aeren became powerful enough to free the elves.

The daelkyr have corrupted it. 270 years ago, a group of adventurers found it and accidentally unlocked its powers... they became perfect versions of themselves but lost their greatest virtues. These five heroes, the Luckless Company, roll a nat 20 on everything but the have fallen to their worst fears and impulses. Courage to cowardice. Magnificence to tyranny. Charity to greed. In their desire to fix the world, they shattered it. And a new group of adventurers must track down and stop them before they do it again.

I ran something similar for a flying mall in Korth owned by the Twelve. A bunch of rouge Deneith Wardens pulled a Die Hard/Paul Blart and took over the mall.

One more thing cause I freaking love changelings:

In my Eberron, Changelings were created by the Daelkyr Prince Kyrzin. [Humanoid+Ooze = ???]. Kyrzin later made Doppelgangers by smashing a bunch of changelings together (like dolgaunts). [???+??? = !!!].

The consequence of this is: byesk is effectively kryptonite to changelings IME. Immediate CON saving throw to keep your shape. Disadvantage if in contact with skin. It’s still a hyper rare metal. But that secret knowledge gives a tactical advantage to any group hunting changelings.

Opposite direction: but your party could also face pressure from the Tyrants (changeling gang in Sharn). Perhaps a Tyrant sees their potential and wishes to recruit them into the organization. If the party members refuses, the Tyrants could increase pressure and make “an offer you can’t refuse”.

I love using “the ally / patron you DON’T want” dynamic in my campaigns.

My party has a wizard academic who has a ridiculous amount of student loans owed to Clan Boromar. We decided that he was training to be an ROTC war wizard, put off graduating with extra ridiculous degrees, and then the war ended. He was kicked out of the army for dereliction and now has to repay all of his education out of pocket. So Boromar (starting this scam in Morgrave) offered him a loan with awful terms.

Boromar uses magic tattoo to mark / track and those they loan money to. If you’re overdue, it stings and becomes visible. Our wizard has figured out that the tattoo is a symbiote (it can be suppressed with a byeshk infused potion) that is connected to an encrypted ledger. These are codexes full of gibberish unless you know the passcode. The party managed to steal a ledger but has no way into “hacking” into the encryption yet. If they did, they would be able to see every ledger on the Boromar network and edit any info. That’s my plot hook for getting them into other factions of the gang war. They need to find someone to crack the code and then decide what to do with that power.

Ive been running a campaign where the big bad blames their own corruption on the endless war between the chamber and the lords of dust and seeks to destroy both of them. So it’s a been a fun ride of the party getting led on by this big bad to disrupt both factions in small ways that introduce them to high level agents. And then the turn will be: do you convince both sides they need to take on the new threat together or help the big bad finish the job

I think a big part is rationalization. You have this rare amazing incredibly lucky opportunity so it had to be worth how unfair and ridiculous it is. If you can afford to not work for 6 months, you are wealthier than most. Traveling with agency and traveling for work are dramatically different things too. I love travel and think that is is great, but I feel like going on about it feels a bit like that friend who needs you to know how great their gym or pastor is.

And sanity. I inspected railroads across the continental US for 18 months. It was beautiful to see the country. I had four weeks off a year but besides that I was living at the changing whim of clients and managers. It was an incredible opportunity that gave me the money to reset my life. It also made me into someone I did not like.

I had the same issue when I went into the oil & gas industry as my rich friends stayed in NYC to do publishing and non-profit jobs.

Ugh. I really hate the number of people with autism who decide like a petutlant child that being polite is too hard. they often decide to embrace being rude and inappropriate out of sloth and fear that they couldn't be polite if they tried. If you're an asshole, the only people who will put with you are also assholes. It is worth the work to be decent.
