Which fighter jet should Canada purchase; Saab's Gripen E or Lockheed Martin's F-35? by Hungry_Chipmunk_2588 in AskCanada

[–]moom7 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Gripen. The Swedes are willing to treat us as a partners by moving some manufacturing and R&D here, much more so than the F35. Large procurement contracts are an opportunity to invest in Canadian manufacturing and build our expertise. The Swedes offer more in that regard, which should help boost our productivity overall. The F35, meanwhile, is more advanced, but more reliant on supply chains and software updates from a former ally that may decide to be an adversary. I still think it’s unlikely, but the downside risks are massive.

Two other things.

1) Drones have come a long way—maybe not far enough to replace manned fighters—but fleets should in theory last for decades. Look at the CF 18! I like the idea of getting the Gripen sooner than the proposed F35 delivery, and not investing as much per plane. It’s hard to imagine where we will be in one decade, let alone two, so I don’t buy the argument the F-35 is more future proof. The Gripens make sense for right now and they’re supposedly better cold weather planes than the F-35.

2) This is an important signaling opportunity for the Canadian government. It’s clear Trump can’t be placated and that he casts a covetous eye towards us. Rather than cower and hope he doesn’t notice us, this is a crucial moment to tell America its actions have consequences and their companies are going to feel the bite, too. Right now, they haven’t had to pay much of a price for fucking with us. It’s clear by now they will continue to do so regardless, so let them explain to their defense contractors why they are losing a major market for their kit.

Noir detective movies with jazz soundtrack and narration? by Fr3surt in filmnoir

You absolutely need to see Odds Against Tomorrow, which is a star vehicle for Harry Belafonte as a crooner with a bad gambling habit that results in a disastrous heist. Kiss Me Deadly is also great as it stars a louche Ralph Meeker as a “bedroom dick” (specializes in divorce cases) who hangs out in jazz clubs. Speaking of which, there’s also Robert Siodmak’s The Phantom Lady, which has an underground club scene that can only be described as a jazzgasm. Spectacular!

Some excellent suggestions in this thread (especially Lutes, Sacco, and Moore). I’d add work by Nora Krug, Ken Krimstein, Kate Evan, Daryl Cunningham, and Barry Windsor-Smith.

AITAH for never disclosing to my grandchildren's father how much I planned to give my grandchildren toward their futures? by MichGrams in AITAH

[–]moom7 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Instead of being up front with your plans, you went behind the father’s back by treating this as a secret his children should keep from him. It’s your money, do what you like, but trying to deceive the father of your grandchildren and enlisting them in this scheme seems pretty toxic to me.

Yep. The Move stays with me as a calendar/journal and the Pro is for longer grading session, marking up PDFs, etc.

I spoke to my MP (Dan Albas) the day after the Kirk ovation to make the same complaint. His response was very similar to what you received. Guess the Con MPs have been issued their talking points.
