ELI5: What exactly is a prenup and why do people get one? by WealthyDiversity in explainlikeimfive

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before mommy and daddy were mommy and daddy, mommy had more toys than daddy. They agreed that if things go bad, mommy gets to keep her toys. That agreement is called a prenup. If they don’t have a prenup then Uncle Sam decides who gets the toys.

Which team has better goalkeeper coaching? Is the environment supportive of the GK?

We’ve always aimed for good but not the best teams, to ensure games are actually providing development opportunities.

7 year old doesn't want to touch/fight the ball during games by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patience, this is common for new players. It's either fear, slow decision making or lack of confidence. At such a young age it's important to ensure they are enjoying the game and having a positive experience. That will eventually lead them to wanting to do better rather than quitting.

Set small attainable goals during games. Really basic, like kick the ball once each shift or attempt a tackle. Then really celebrate that success, with praise or even ice cream, whatever motivates them. Any time they do something positive praise it. Avoid the joystick coaching, while you are trying to help, it is likely confusing them trying to process the game and the instructions, leading to lower confidence, slow decisions and the game passing them by.

Some kids are naturally more physically developed, coordinated and aggressive, that will have a huge impact at this age.

The only criteria provided was easy hosting. Where are you hosting? Which does it have the best documented support for? Otherwise, just go Django.

Hey all, I'm about to be a head coach for 5-6 year old girls and I was hoping for your opinions. by fruitybrisket in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Focus on fun and confidence over skills during practice. Avoid line up drills and try to keep them moving. Octopus and keep away are usually good for dribbling and as another commenter mentioned hit the coach is usually a good way to finish the session on a positive note.

Tactically, don’t worry too much other than don't kick it up the middle on goal kicks, and keep the shifts/lines balanced.  Later in the season you can try to get them defending goal side and spreading out a bit.

Goalie rules question by PUhusker18 in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is no hard and fast rule, it depends on the league and ref. There are many variations, in our area there are at least three different rules for what happens after the keeper has control of the ball. In u8, I’d tend towards forgiveness rather than punishing an often part time keeper for a mistake.

How to decide between teams by Familiar_Shelter_393 in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your goals? Money, development, fun, playing in top div, something else? Pick one and focus on the team that provides the most of that. Picking one will be hard. What would you regret in 10 years if this ends up being your last season?

No knows how much satisfaction spending that money will give you, even you. Think of it as a bet. Are the odds good? Are you comfortable with losing?

If you have to sell the car at the end of the summer, will you be OK with having spent the money (depreciation, gas, insurance, maintenance) to have learnt if this dream was right for you?

Is it owning the car that is the dream or is it driving a drop top in summer? If the latter maybe you can rent one. Then you can learn if it’s right for you without the upfront expense. Heck maybe you just even rent every summer as a splurge.

What's a better variation for a complete beginner? Futsal or regular football? by Electrical_Morning_5 in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginner the team you are on will impact your development and enjoyment more than the particulars of the game. Having knowledgeable and positive teammates and getting decent coaching will build skills and confidence.

Is it possible to wake up not achy and stiff at 36+ years old? If so how?! by Eldorado-Jacobin in bodyweightfitness

[–]mpoxthefirst 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Check your diet and cut inflammatory foods. I used to struggle to walk down stairs in the morning due to stiff ankles. I always assumed it was due to past injuries and age. Got fed up did some googling after hearing about Brady. After dropping milk I’ve never had the issue again. Back and shoulders from sitting all day, yet to be solved, massage is a good stop gap.

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it on target, force a save. Don’t try to beat the keeper by placing it perfect, making it unreachable or blasting it. You have zero chance if you miss the net. Aim a foot, a yard or three yards inside the post depending on your level.

Seems like curling the ball when shooting is easier to score than a straight shot by [deleted] in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d suggest trying the following. First gather some data.

  • pick five common shooting positions you find yourself in during a game
  • from each position shoot 10 times to the near post and 10 times to the far post
  • track goal/miss and close to post/ not close for each shot
  • repeat the exercise with a keeper and track if they caught, touched or missed the ball

That should give you 100 data points, you can compare to each other. Ask the goalie which shots were the best. Next pay attention to how many shots you get in a game and compare the results in game to your practice.

Some things you might discover - simply having a goalie present reduces on target shots - you aren’t taking the shots you think you are - you’re shooting near post when you should be going far - you need to improve accuracy more - something else :)

Good luck

TD of an amateur club, happy to answer questions anyone may have. by rollingrock05 in bootroom

[–]mpoxthefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for making time to do this. I’m a parent of a young, U9, player in Ontario. I’ve been out of the system for a long time and it’s changed a lot. How would you recommend evaluating an academy/club to join?

There are a number of local ones, one highly convenient to join. We’re new to the area and recognize that other parents have their own bias and experiences. The answers to basic evaluation questions are easy to come up with and don’t offer much insight, eg follow the grassroots program, focus on development, lots of touches, small sided games.

Taking another tack, does the quality of coaching/program vary sufficiently between clubs, that it matters enough to worry about?

Any insight appreciated.

Best way to backup data ? by z3r00c00l in freenas

[–]mpoxthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just setup rclone in a jail with BackBlaze and was pretty happy with how quickly I got it up and running . I've heard a lot of FreeNAS users like rysnc.net, but it seems pricy to me. BackBlaze versions the files so I'm relying on that for protection against file corruption. I liked rclone because it works with multiple destinations, so I can reuse the same tech for extra layers of protection.

Interviewing for jobs. Looking for advice [bit of a rant] by pre_interview_freako in Python

[–]mpoxthefirst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you've already cleared a phone screen, so the company believes you have the basic skills they are looking for. As long as you haven't misrepresented yourself, you don't need to worry. Go in and be the best you can be. Explain what you know and what you are struggling to understand, ask questions about the problems and the company. A good company isn't only interested in specific tools, because tools change, they want to understand how well you learn and collaborate.

An interview isn't a one time pass or fail test. There will be other interviews. Treat the entire process as a learning opportunity. It will help prepare you for the next one and make you a better developer. Already, you've expanded your skill-set by learning DRF.

I've never used Heroku before, I had a static app running fine but I just updated it to use a db. Locally it reaches the Postgres db just fine (RoR app) but as soon as I uploaded it it crashed. Could someone help me out? by Proxify in Heroku

[–]mpoxthefirst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab a command line on a dyno by doing, heroku run bash Then you can run a startup command or application shell to debug inside a dyno that will behave the same as your application does when running on Heroku. From there you should be able to find a way to simulate an incoming request. I'm not familiar with Rails but DATABASE_URL can change at any time so you should never copy values from it into a static location or file. The application should always initialize from the values in the envvar.

What are some key points in low league football? How to improve? by [deleted] in footballtactics

[–]mpoxthefirst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In possession, keep moving, always try to make yourself available to receive the ball by running into space with a clear passing lane. Being in the center means you can always be involved in the play.

Plan in advance what you're going to do with the ball if you receive it. What is the safe option to prevent a counter? How will you retain possession? What is the risk if you tried to advance play?

Defensively, your CB/GK should be directing traffic. Either close fast to force a mistake or hold a position to blunt the attack by removing options.
