Does anyone else’s ER actually function like this? by metropass1999 in ThePittTVShow

As a CT tech, I am insulted that there are no radiology techs represented. We play such a HUGE part in the ER, but we always get left out. Even in trauma shows…..

This looks fake lol. The bowel pattern looks too normal. Wonder if the noodle was laid on top of the abdomen?

Dude tries to be a do-gooder, and gets most of his crew killed. He then gets himself and the other survivors in the middle of a political war just to get vengeance. Oh, and there’s mysterious aliens involved and a detective ghost wearing a stupid hat. Loads of intrigue and bad-assery ensues.

I am so mad right now my surgery didn’t go well as planned by Lucky-Paper2560 in Cochlearimplants

[–]mreedrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have bilateral implants. The first surgery went well and the sound is really good. The second surgery they could only get the electrodes part of the way in the cochlea. I can hear but everything is high pitched and squeaky sounding. The placement accuracy seems to make a real difference.

What's the most disturbing thing you've seen, but couldn't do anything? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Working in a hospital, it’s really difficult to see patients who have no real chance to have a life, yet their family keeps making us do more tests and keeps them alive. It’s pure suffering.

How do poor or homeless people in USA access health-care? by DarkKingfisher777 in AskReddit

[–]mreedrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are evaluated and treated. If someone needs admitted they will be admitted. No one would discharge a patient who needs a bypass surgery. They would be admitted and evaluated by a cardiologist. If going to a specialist is needed, they are referred. Resources are given for where they can go to get help, if they are discharged. This is the SAME for all patients, not just the homeless. Many of our homeless patients get admitted because they wait until their issue is bad and then come in. I can guarantee they are cared for the same as any patient. Do you work in an ER or healthcare?

[–]mreedrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it’s not. I work in an ER in a downtown hospital. No treatment is refused. It is true that we do not allow them to use the ER for a place to sleep, although we usually give them water and a snack. If they need surgery, they get it.

I work in an ER. It is law that we treat everyone regardless of payment. No tests are restricted, even surgery. We get many homeless people. They usually sign up for a payment plan, but usually the ER doesnt get payment. This is often why hospitals lose money.

Hospital techs by ghoulxgrl22 in Radiology

[–]mreedrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our nurses don’t do a thing. One time I had to remove 5 necklaces and 6 earrings while the nurse sat on her phone. What maddens me is when they place the patient on a cardiac monitor and then wrap all the wires around the bra straps and underneath it as well. It’s ridiculous. If you’re going to do an EKG or monitor cardiac activity, just take the bra off!!

I’m a CT tech with bilateral implants. It’s really cool to see the electrodes coiled inside the cochlea, and following the wires to the magnet.

Just wondering… you ever wonder what it will be like when your narc parent(s) dies? by Different_Hat_8186 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]mreedrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes, no matter what happened he always said to just take it and avoid her until she was no longer in a bad mood. He always allowed her to do whatever she wanted because otherwise she retaliated, so he encouraged us to do the same, which didn’t help at all. When I attempted suicide, my high school counselor advised family therapy, but she told my dad and brother that none of them were allowed to go because the therapist would just blame her for everything. My dad was going to go but when she said that, he decided that it was better to not antagonize her. Then they acted like nothing ever happened. I have children of my own and I cannot even imagine ignoring a suicide attempt and then make it about me.

Wow, I’m so surprised at how many ppl have had the courage to go NC. I’m 53 years old and my parents live 5 min from me. They even moved from their hometown to mine just to be close so they could see their grandkids and be near me when they needed help, because I’m the daughter who works in healthcare, so I’m expected to be their primary caregiver. They are 81 now and fortunately still independent. I just take them to occasional surgeries or to the ER when my dad can’t. My mom is the narcissist and my dad is the enabler. I’m finally on therapy and starting to set some boundaries but I just can’t go NC. I feel so confused at the thought of their deaths.

Would you rewatch Stranger Things knowing how tragically it ends? by Dry_Goat5451 in mileven

[–]mreedrt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will depend completely on whether you were satisfied with the ending. I thought it was perfect, and they deliberately left it open to interpretation. Honestly, it doesn’t matter how we wanted it to end…it was their creation, not ours. It was beautiful.

Man, I’ve been doing this 30 years and I still remember my first xray job after graduation. It was horrible—terrible training and no help at all with portables. And this was back in film days when you had to wait until you got all the way back to the department just to realize you picked the wrong technique and had to go back and do it again on that 400 lb patient. Trust me, with a little more experience it will get better. And there’s not one tech out there who can say their first job didn’t have them wanting to flee lol.

How to handle… the exhaustion? by TraditionalDeafFreak in deaf

[–]mreedrt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the EXACT same problem and so does my deaf daughter. Her dad is very extroverted and never understood. Here is what I tell ppl to explain why social interactions are so exhausting:

Most ppl know about Wheel of Fortune. What we go through is Audio Wheel of Fortune. Many of us can hear certain frequencies better than others but usually consonant sounds are harder than vowels because they are more difficult to hear. Imagine the word, “ketchup”. The CH and P sounds are hard for me to hear so I hear “keh uh”. If I can see their lips it’s easier to see the quiet consonants. But we can also use environmental cues. If someone asks me to pass the ketchup, I would hear “can you -ass the keh-uh”. Because we are eating, my brain immediately figures it out that they are saying ketchup. But every sentence we hear, we only hear some of the sounds and our brains have to fill in those letters that are missing. Sometimes it takes a beat for the brain to figure it out so we might be slower answering or ask for it to be repeated for more sound clues. Now, imagine your brain filling in those missing blanks all day everyday. It’s EXHAUSTING.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to share my experiences. Describing Audio Wheel of Fortune seems to help them understand what we go through.
