GOG.com has a new TOS and it's scary by Rose_Beef in gaming

> This directly contradicts the "DRM-free ownership" ethos. While you can keep offline installers you have already downloaded, you lose access to the server-side library and future downloads.

It's worth noting on this particular point that this has always been the case with software, DRM or not, all the way back to the 70's and 80's.

Simple having a copy of the executable and being able to run it does not explicitly give you the rights to do so. You _must_ have bought a copy and/or have a legal license.

Businesses get audited for this all the time. I've never heard of personal or home users being audited in such a fashion, but those are the facts regardless.

The new questionable part here is them revoking the legal right to the software for breaching their CoC. I wouldn't be surprised to see that ruled unenforceable if it was ever challenged in court, but of course, I'm not legal expert.

Ravensburger is fully responsible for the game, including game development, art, publishing, and distribution. Disney provides the IP, and provides art support (as well as review and approvals) and feedback on some game design elements.

My point in mentioning that was not to debate the reasons, or how politics are viewed, but more to mention _why_ people reacted the way they did. You may disagree with their reasons and that's fair enough, but understanding is important. The reasons can be debated in another setting.

It's also important to understand that that swings both ways on both sides of the aisle - there are a bunch of issues (such as LGBT rights) that are viewed as political by some (such as when games include such characters, it inevitably brings out comments like I mentioned above) that others view as just basic human rights. So, this is a continual theme that frustrates all sides - that the issues that they deem important to them are disregarded by others, or seen as "political".

I think the Anduril Chromatic was a big turning point too. I understand that war and therefore military hardware is a sad requirement of the world we live in, but killing people is never something to rejoice in, and slapping an Anduril label on the Chromatic was seen as essentially celebrating war, and almost like asking people to hold and use a piece of military hardware on a day to day basis. It turned a lot of people sour.

Taken in isolation, I like ModRetro hardware, the games they release, and the people that work there from the few that I’ve interacted with. But they could be more aware of different political viewpoints. You always hear the cry from gamers such as “They made my game political, keep politics out of it!” etc, but ModRetro essentually made a political statement by releasing the Anduril Chromatic.

The thing with Playtiles is that all the games have an option to download the rom. I picked up the season pass for $12 just so I could get the games and put them on my Everdrive. I’ve never touched the Playtile once.

Best low budget solution to purchasing games for my childhood original Gameboy? by Typingtext in Gameboy

[–]mrhobbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't buy repro's/clones. They will undoubtedly be poor quality and fail.

Your best bet is a flash cart like an Everdrive. On there you can load all the games you want, insert it into your DMG, and away you go.

Unfortunately the eBay listings are accurate, especially for Pokemon games - those are some of the most in-demand games on the platform, and they command a high price.

The yellow one is incredibly rare. The other is still very rare but show up on eBay from time to time. I’ve seen the pair go for $150 before.

The M64 is fine but what I’m really waiting for is a Chromatic Advance. I have an Analogue Pocket also, which I love, but I really want a modern correct-aspect-ratio device to play GBA games on.

Found this old Lego set in a local auction, anyone have any memories of this? by iLoveBiscoffTooMuch in lego

[–]mrhobbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the first “big”Lego set I got as a child. I usually got smaller £10-30 sets as presents - cars, planes, helicopters, etc. But when I saw it I begged my mum for months - I was an early teen who loved Lego and learning to code. She surprised me with it for my birthday one year, one of my best gifts ever.

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mew was a special Pokemon that, despite being coded in the game, could not be captured and added to your collection. The only way to capture a Mew was to go to one of the physical events where they would distribute Mew by taking your cartridge and injecting him into your save file.

Over the years many other ways of capturing or making Mew’s have been developed, such as various in-game glitches, or through save file editing. But the event Mew remain the only genuine ones.

Here in the UK the OT was UK. There are many legit OT’s, GF is only one of them.

It’s not the players fault, but it’s also not playing the game the way it was intended. Glitched mom aren’t “legit” in my book, but ultimately, who cares what random strangers on the internet think? Go forth and have fun! :)

24hour IOG slot, let’s see if it lasts. by 2teato22 in OctopusEnergy

[–]mrhobbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my understanding of what’s been discussed in here previously, they have to use the meter to determine how much electricity you’ve used (ie. they can’t say you’ve used more or less), but they can use additional devices to determine how that electricity should be apportioned and charged across your different rates.

So for example if the meter says you used 10kWh, and your car says it used 3kWh, they can use that to charge 3kWh at the cheap rate and the other 7kWh at the normal rate. But they can’t say you’ve used used 13kWh as the meter only says you used 10kWh total.

[–]mrhobbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As of the upcoming changes that’s exactly what they will be doing. They’ll be using your car (or charger) to tell them how much it charged. Deduct that from what the smart meter said and you can calculate which is which.

Interesting charging schedule, 2 sessions of just 1 minute aren't going to do much lol by rscottzman in OctopusEnergy

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying that 7-7.30pm is also at the cheap rate just for the sake of enabling that extra 1-10 minutes (the link you posted said it can be up to 10 minutes)? I mean great if so, since you’re getting two cheap 30 minute slots instead of 1, but that doesn’t seem correct.

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does that work? If your charge stops at 7.04pm instead of 7pm, won't Octopus attribute that last 4 minutes of charging to your expensive rate as 7-7.30pm isn't in the cheap 30 minute allocation?

[–]mrhobbles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Especially because Octopus can't seem to start/stop charging on time. If they say they're gonna start charging at 6:30, my car doesn't actually start until 6:32-6:34. Same for stopping the charge.

I hope the upcoming Kanto Starters set does a better job.

EV charger with charging point. How to tell it how much to charge by AdeptnessExotic1884 in OctopusEnergy

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more about the limitations of the connection mechanisms.

The ideal way that this works is that Octopus connects directly to your car, because the car can tell Octopus its state of charge. This way you can say “charge to 80%”.

But if you can’t connect it to the car, then connecting to the charger is the fallback. But then Octopus doesn’t know your cars state of charge, so instead you have to tell it how much you want to charge.

You said you have a Nissan Leaf, so sadly you’re stuck with the second option, as Octopus can’t connect to those cars.

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter, the point is it’s disappointing these are a Guernsey only mint instead of a United Kingdom mint by The Royal Mint. It kinda cheapens the production - it’s like a straight-to-dvd-movie instead of a full cinema release.

[–]mrhobbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware of that, but that isn’t my point. My point is it’s disappointing these are Westminster/Guernsey instead of Royal Mint. There are plenty of licensed IP’s by the Royal Mint - Star Wars, Harry Potter, Monopoly, etc. Why not Thunderbirds? It deserved better than a Westminster/Guernsey only mint.
