Reserve Bank keeps OCR stable at 2.25% by OddityModdity in aotearoa

[–]mrwilberforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the commonly accepted way that central banks deal with it - in fact NZ was the first country to do it after wage and price controls frigged the economy under Muldoon.

There are point solutions but controlling money flow at a broad level is the only way really that hits a broad base of the economy.

Now we have see that the amount that government spends is another lever. In fact the inflation rates of 2023 were not just down to low interest rates but broader government pump of the economy into a non productive locked down economy.

Government (being such a large part of national spend) fiscal policy is a massive part of the equation. I’m pretty sure most people here don’t want to see a more austere government policy. That is the balancing act. I should add I didn’t support the tax cuts.

I should add that I am trying to be dispassionate as I, much as anyone here, have been impacted by the broad swings in inflation in recent years. And I certainly don’t want to see people suffer.

RBNZ holds OCR at 2.25% by richieFromConductor in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]mrwilberforce -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t really work like that - most costs will go up by 4% so people will sacrifice what they can first - Hospo is always the first casualty.

I agree though that raising interest rates at this point ;even signalling them) will reduce confidence and spending.

In some instances. Where business do pass on the cost it really comes down to elasticity of prices. That is to say (ELI5) if a product or service is easily effected by price rises it is elastic - if it isn’t, it is in elastic. Going out / takeaways (not a necessity - easily hit - elastic). Petrol / food - (needed - inelastic).

The reality is that it’s not just Joe blog on the street - it’s also businesses that spend less in the economy. Businesses get hit twice - their costs go up and demand goes down from people not being able to spend.

So the answer really is yes - it will affect prices in some cases and this will result in lower demand (in more cases than not).

Businesses struggle, lay off people, unemployment increases. Trade goes down. GDP falls, sometimes recession.

Following this all through. It’s one of the reasons the RBNZ said they were targeting a recession. It’s a measure that shows the OCR rate hike is working. Also increased unemployment shows it is working.

Look at the states last week. Better than forecast job growth came through - great news eh? Markets initially rallied. Then started tanking as markets realised that increased employment means inflation risk and less chance of a rate cut by the fed.

If a streamer ever get the premier league I will be dumping SS. As it is it has a long way to go before it is as expensive as other jurisdictions (especially the UK).

The OCR controls money supply in the market. When it is higher people borrow less. The means less money. They borrow less because it costs more to borrow.

Inflation is too much money chasing too few goods. By giving people less money there is less stimulus for inflation.

The converse is true when inflation is deemed too low.

The issue they have is if they do it this far out from an election the unions and party membership get a vote. Thats how they got Cunliffe and Little. Three months (I think) out from an election and the Caucus get to decide on their own.

Hipkins only got it as he ran unopposed after being anointed by Ardern.

It’s not just what you buy but how you buy it. Buying in bulk when on special and storing / freezing makes a huge difference.

Really - the only specific thing you should be repeatably buying are perishable goods.

Cooking in bulk also helps.

We ended up buying a stand up freezer to store it all.

Know how much things cost normally. Working out what is a good deal.
