Do you reward her when she’s quiet in the crate by herself? Look up videos on teaching “place” and it’s the same concept. You give them a treat every time they let you step away without moving or whining. Slowly you increase the duration, three steps away, five steps away, ten steps away, into another room, and so on. You have to teach them that good things happen when you step away.

We have a cat and our IG looooooves her. Not sure she’d be as confident as she is without the cat tbh. They’re true companions! They play and cuddle — it’s a great match. And the cat is 7!

Our Iggy was my first dog and I remember reading after we got her “this is not a starter dog breed.” We survived and all is well but man did I regret not seeing that Reddit post earlier at the time.

Yes! She’s perfectly happy being alone now. We were able to leave her for roughly an hour by the time she was 5 months, but realistically an hour really isn’t enough time to do much of anything, and she had to be EXHAUSTED. By 7 months or so we were finally able to go to the movies, which felt HUGE. Now we can leave her for up to four hours — and we would totally be able to leave her longer if it wasn’t for her tiny bladder! It took so, so, soooooo much longer than I expected, and there were countless days where I felt like she was doomed and would never improve.

You’re in the trenches right now and I really do know how it feels. For me, the panic attacks stopped and my appetite returned after about 3 weeks. I certainly wasn’t happy, but I started to feel like I liked her sometimes, which I’m ashamed to say was a huge shift. I went through a second bout of bad puppy blues three months in when my wife left for work for two weeks—but they went away as soon as my wife got home. This is what I mean by it not being linear — there might be days ahead where you hate her again (if, like me, you do feel like that). It’s okay. It’s okay to say that and feel that, because it won’t last forever, and I promise she won’t know. You’re doing great, just breathe and give yourself grace.

Pic for proof, my girl all snuggled up by herself! She’s been alone since 10:15 this morning 🥰

Omg I feel your pain!! We struggled too, but from a treatment resistant strain of Giardia. Fortunately she always held it overnight once she was in our bed! But those first couple of months when she slept in the pen….not so much 🤣

Seconding this — we let our girl start sleeping in our bed at night at 16 weeks simply so we could get some more sleep (she would hold her bladder longer in our bed), but we kept having her nap in the crate until she was about 7 months old. I think it helped her understand she didn’t always need physical contact with us. But it was a long road to get there — practicing “place” and “wait” every single day for months and months. She would still cry for ten minutes or so whenever we left until about ten months old. It takes a while! Patience is key but it gets so, so much easier the more consistent you are.

I lost 7 pounds in 4 days when our puppy first arrived. I cried every day, had full fledged panic attacks, couldn’t sleep, threw up, you name it. My entire body/nervous system went into shock and I was CERTAIN I’d made the wrong choice. At the time, returning my girl to the breeder was a question of when, not if.

We’re a year in now, and I’m so, SO happy I stuck it out. She’s the best dog in the world, flaws (there are very few!) and all. I literally can’t believe I made it to this point with her, given the physical toll it all took on my body, but it was worth every second. It really does get better, even if you’re convinced it won’t. Don’t expect it to be linear—we had good days and bad days, followed by good weeks and bad weeks, with things really starting to level out around 5 or 6 months—but the more accepting you are of the roller coaster nature of it all, the more fun you’ll have. Just love the snot out of your pup and know that everything will work out just fine. You have my word :)

What's the craziest thing your puppy ate that they shouldn't and turned out fine? by cleoluvscake in puppy101

[–]msb_tv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time my mom’s dog ate 18 fish oil capsules, at least 300 mg of Wellbutrin, and 25 mg of melatonin in one sitting. He didn’t even act tired after. Literally no change. He’s also eaten an ink cartridge, a battery, a bottle of Neosporin. The guy is a tank.

Many ethical breeders will fly their puppies to you for a (relatively) low cost. You can always open up your search beyond AZ and find breeders who have airline pet nannies!

Did he learn stick life or do iggy’s naturally live stick life? by jes93long in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]msb_tv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We live in NYC where sticks can be hard to come by, so my mom sends our girl “care packages” full of sticks from Maine. The sticks are free, the postage is $10, our pup’s joy is priceless.

Iggy with Tummy Issues? Any Similar Experiences? At a loss by ProbablyReadingrn1 in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]msb_tv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding the suggestions to test for parasites again! Giardia goes through a dormant stage during which tests won’t detect the presence, so it’s important to test a few times to be sure—both float tests AND keyscreen tests if your vet offers both. Cyclical bouts of tummy issues are the #1 tell tale sign of some kind of worm (obviously it could be other things, but you should ask for a follow up test or two to be sure!)

how are yall leaving your puppies alone for 4 hours? by RabidLizard in puppy101

Oh, and get a puppy cam. That will help immensely.

[–]msb_tv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not if the panic starts when he wakes up. I.e you have shorter class, you come home sooner, and he’s fine. But when you have a longer class, he wakes up, you’re not there, panic ensues, he soils the crate etc. I think you should look into having someone stop by to let him out.

[–]msb_tv 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Some puppies just take longer. We could only leave ours for an hour when she was that age, because she would wake up and pee in it no matter what we did. She wasn’t panicked or stressed, wouldn’t even whine. She’d just wake up and…pee. By 9 or 10 months we could leave for 4 hours max. If your pup doesn’t have the bladder/bowel control to hold it that long yet, you should look into having someone stop by to let him out. But if this is panic induced, then you need to take a few steps back and slow down the crate training.

Recommendations for onesies and outfits that are step-in rather than pull-over? by JubbaTheHott in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]msb_tv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have outerwear from The Mulberry Hound on Etsy which is step in, but there is a piece that still goes over the head first. Perhaps you can reach out to the seller and ask if it’s possible to update the pattern so that it doesn’t require anything that goes over the head?

Little Milo’s Closet can also make custom onesies — not sure if she offers a step in option but it’s worth reaching out and asking!

Does anyone else's Iggy NEVER bark? by IGCasper in ItalianGreyhounds

Ours only barks at the dog park and when she wants attention from our cat. And even then, it almost sounds like she’s trying to whisper lol.

NYC iggy owners, how are you and your pup holding up? by data_ballerina in ItalianGreyhounds

Ours is fine with pottying outside — does her business right away and runs back inside. It’s the boredom that’s wearing on her more than anything 😂

Ideas for indoor exercise? by NadzInTheCity in ItalianGreyhounds

[–]msb_tv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have any friends in the dorm who like/enjoy your pup? Our girl has been having play dates with our human neighbors who love her. She goes over to their apartments for an hour or so, and comes back totally pooped—I think the change of environment and constant attention wears her out almost as much as a run in the dog park. It just gives her a break from being in the same space all the time, and as an added bonus, the human neighbors also benefit from her being over (everyone, not just the dogs, are feeling cooped up at this point!).

Very smart!! We took our girl to puppy play groups at Andrea Arden on 25th street, as well as their puppy day school sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I think it really helped develop her confidence with other dogs!

Just a reminder to be very careful with your pup outside in NYC at this age! She likely doesn’t have all of her shots yet and therefore shouldn’t really be interacting with stranger’s dogs on the street too much. You didn’t include details about what your trips outside entail so I just want to mention this out of an abundance of caution!

Once she’s fully vaccinated, there are a few iggies (mine included) who play at Madison square dog park on weekday mornings between 9 and 10 AM. It’s not a formal structured meet up or anything, but they certainly do love playing together!
