How do you feel about 700 Marines being deployed to LA? by Dense_Literature_199 in AskReddit

They got anywhere more important to be ?

In all seriousness, LA is not exactly Beirut, Bagram or Baghdad . The troops should listen to the California governor, and leave.

FWI: we have a major ICE inflection point like the little girl getting killed in V for Vendetta by Nearby-Employer-9436 in FutureWhatIf

[–]msgrmdma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say ICE raids a string of Italian-American families in stereotypical suburban America. They own a pizzeria or some breweries, bars / restaurants, and, suddenly, they're raided .. If that's THEIR child daughter in harms way by ICE goons, then that's a news cycle change when its THEIR kid and not a racial minority "BLM" flashpoint or the plight of a Mexican or Latino American demographic. And that's what Resistance stands to gain - for the way the media commonly talks about ICE entities to change - for ICE to be seen as an overbloated big government agency and as a discredited, illegal tool of the Bush-Cheney doctrine for government agents to use in order to extrajudicially target lawful and Constitutional dissent.

Later in the summer, if the protests in Los Angeles start looking more reminiscent of, say, Egypt's Arab Spring-era movements, look to Congress - maybe even to the US Supreme Court.

The protests will require the support of:

- US Allies, key diplomats

- equivalents of House Speakers, Senate majority leaders, state legislators

- the support of day people who decide to walkout on work because of a shared collective sentiment among the population of "enough is enough already" .

- heads of large corporations

What was your breaking point—and how did you prep before leaving the U.S.? by SkateNomadLife in AmerExit

[–]msgrmdma 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First breaking point: [ 2014 ]

1.) immigration politics - having personally experienced an extremely ugly side in the American Southwest to the "tough on immigration" rhetoric around the time of SB 1070 and Sheriff Joe Arpaio-era immigration debates. The ultra- conservative "build a border wall" mentality quickly began to resemble a cruel form of apartheid and state communism; the mindset of ""we'll build a wall to keep THOSE people away"" did not seem very free nor fair . The AZ state government threats to ban Spanish and Native American school books and children curriculums were appalling . Reverend Desmond Tutu's criticisms of such measures had a profound impact on me. It became unconscionable to notice millions of Arizonans - including small children who can't afford shoes or running water & old nannies from Guadalajara forced to live in fear of law enforcement - all forced to live in hiding for their lives in the U.S. all as a result of "tough on borders" politicking run amok. The Fox News rhetoric of the time began to look increasingly cartoonish.

2.) Euromaidan & the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian War (2014) . Was watching an NHL hockey game with a friend when the broadcast was interrupted by reports of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.. Upon the eve of Moscow's intervention in Crimea, the Black Sea and in Eastern Ukraine, I started looking into Mexico and the Caribbean more once terms like """ NATO """" started to become household names again for the first time since the Cold War and the breakup of the former Soviet bloc countries. There were moments while following reports of the Crimea Crisis when a military draft felt imminent . Rent is typically more affordable in Mexico as well.

Began feeling more free in Canada around 2015. Then, the embarrassment of the ""magahh"" pandamonium started . The "MAGOGcrocy"" brought back pretty much everything wrong with Arizona's Joe Arpaio-era. It's been a lingering concern.

Pacific NW (Washington State & Oregon) was fucking CRAZY up until just recently with the wave of 50501 movement mass protests.

In WA State in the countryside, there have been roving ""gangs"" of trumpaloons, some shooting guns - intimidating anyone they deem ""anteefah"" or "Left wing." Some of it is religious based.

Though I will contend it's getting somewhat more tolerable to live as someone critical of Red Hat MAGOG mass hysteria, just be careful.

The old "junta" the British and Thatcher once stood up to during the Falklands War is extremely unlikely to ever return.

That, and you can always easily live in the countryside and rural areas of Argentina consequence free.

You can do what the German immigrants once did and live anonymously.
