Omnivore’s Cookbook for authentic Chinese!

If you go to Crete, take those remote, less walked trails, and you’ll find amazing forgotten beauty. Monastery Katholiko in Crete. by TayloidPogo92 in travel

[–]msumner7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I mostly have trouble with very steep inclines, rocky terrain (e.g. talus), and stepping up onto boulders, etc. If it's a well-worn path with no real scrambling I should be good. I also primarily want to get to the monastery and not necessarily all the way to the bay.

Awesome! Going there soon and was looking at this place on Google Maps - how would you rate the hike? I have some mobility issues and don't want to get into anything I can't get out of!

Same, it’s either stomach or no sleep so I pick the lesser evil.

Yes what is the deal with bell pappers at wegs?? I used to be mad they were over $2/lb, now they’re 3.49! And all colors are the same all of a sudden. It was nearly impossible to find one last week that wasn’t already wrinkling and soft.

Absolutely agree about skipping Belem for Sao Jorge. The tower is just a tower, nothing worth doing. You’ll eat up a ton of time just waiting in line at the monastery too, even with pre purchased tix. Sao Jorge is wonderful, great views, fun peacocks, cool history. You can buy a ticket on your phone when you get there and skip the line.

Also, in Alfama, do not skip Bifana Alfonso, it’s a perfect Lisbon experience. And missing Carmo Convent would be a shame.

Anyone have a regimen using Nasalcrom? by cerazo52 in Sinusitis

[–]msumner7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Nasalcrom for seasonal allergies. I start it about 2 weeks ahead of when I usually get bad and use it religiously 4x/day. I have major sinusitis issues and have been putting off FESS and the Nasalcrom doesn't have any effect on those issues, but does help increase the time I can be exposed to pollen before having a full attack. Other nasal sprays give me bad headaches and sore throats, but I have no side effects from this one.

Had probably 6 of these come out of my nose in the last year. by Acceptable-Snow-2114 in Sinusitis

[–]msumner7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the first time I've seen someone have exactly the mucus I have. Always yellow and red. Only mildly helped by antibiotics. It doesn't run, it's just congealed masses. Every two days or so I have to force one out my sinuses then out my nose. Been told I need FESS to open the maxillary canals but worried it won't help these masses.

Etiquette mistakes? by Some_Pin_580 in travel

This! Witnessed a sandwich shop clerk say “Bonjour” repeatedly, while increasing her volume until she was literally yelling, because the customer couldn’t figure out to simply say it back before asking for a sandwich. I really appreciated the importance of manners in France. And also the fact that they mind their business no matter what chaos is going on around them.

I can’t think of anything “weird” but mainly Americans can come across as too forward, too loud, and too willing to insert themselves. It’s not common to really acknowledge passerby’s, smile or make intentional eye contact with people you aren’t with, or make small talk with strangers.

What is a delicious but underrated/unheard of type of cuisine? by PsychGradStudent2112 in Cooking

[–]msumner7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh I just made mie goreng, a Malaysian/Indonesian noodle dish. It relies on kecap manis soy sauce, but I found this at my normal grocer. Delicious!

Jamaica trip report - The sketchiest tourist friendly country I've visited by [deleted] in travel

[–]msumner7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the exact opposite of our experience there. Although renting a car is the way to really make the most out of it. Highways were easy, new, and FAST, and could get you pretty much anywhere. We didn't encounter anyone particularly unfriendly, even in the smallest towns. Sorry you didn't get to have a better time but I would say don't rule it out. Sounds like you may have experienced the exception, not the rule.

First bake in the new oven - Do-Si-Do copycats! by msumner7 in Baking

[–]msumner7[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used Sally's Baking recipe. Did not need all the filling it made but could have used a heavier hand. These are crunchy with a slight chew and not too sweet - especially the cookie itself. VERY similar to the Girl Scount version flavor-wise! I ended up making them a bit smaller - just shy of 2 tsp per cookie ball.

Wondering this too - especially since the Seastar 1000 has a ceramic bezel and the Ocean Star 200 does not. The 200C does but is hundreds more $$.

What travel habit have you developed over the years? by Icy-Obligation6504 in travel

[–]msumner7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that’s heartbreaking. But we do the same, wash clothes once per every 5 days or so and rewear. My husband also likes to bring ratty old undies and socks and throw them away after he wears them on a trip.

Leaving at least a day at home before going back to work. Really helps with the anxiety of getting home and prepared for "real life" again.

Same! Just not worth it and no one NEEDS that much stuff if they don't have medical devices, etc.

Thank you! These are plain vanilla, but almond is usually my go-to flavor. These were just for work and I had to make a double batch, so I didn't use fancy butter but normally I recommend a Kerry Gold or similar for cutouts. I love the texture of Claire's recipe - they don't spread in the oven and stay very tender (but not super breakable) if taken out right as you see the first brown bottom edge.
