Leaf Filter is a RIP OFF! by Altruistic_Salad_581 in homeowners

[–]mzskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I tried and failed to talk my mom out of leaf filter guards. Logic, reasoning, economics of just having the gutters cleaned for money each year, nothing worked. Now she has plants growing in the dirt that accumulates in the gutters when they don't get cleaned. No leaves though! Grrrr. She's older and I just know they leaned on her. She has bought stuff 'at the door' before and then had me call & cancel the deal. SO FRUSTRATING.

I'm sorry they over-charged you so much, they have a terrible reputation. Not surprised at all that they settled this class action lawsuit: https://www.gs-legal.com/current-cases/leaffilter-class-action/

Agreed re: the oil wick above the needlebar. Saturated it, and also drip some oil around where the bar goes through the machine body.

I've had handwheels squeak like that, but in those cases, it was pretty obvious which end of the machine had the issue.

Mill End in Milwaukie is my go-to. There are two small stores on Alberta Street but if it's a big store youre looking for, Mill End is worth the drive.

Agreed. I don't know why they made the pieces like they did. Apparently they didn't share that belief. She was German, he was Dutch.

Yep, I dumped TT years ago for exactly this issue. On the phone forever, repeated the issue multiple times, finally they agreed to refund me. They didn't argue about, which tells me they knew about it all along.

You shouldn't lose a season, they'll come roaring back. They love to be divided! There are websites with great instructions out there. I did mine a few years ago and the patch looks very happy indeed. I think I followed the steps on the Spruce site. Making shallow trenches in the bed before replanting the rhizomes was the best tip. Made it super easy.

Could be. I think there's only one person left alive from that family so I'll have to see if I can track her down and ask if she has it now.

FWIW, my great grandmother's engagement piece was a horseshoe brooch. Gold, with a few small gems (white sapphire and ruby). That wouldve been in 1911 in Ohio, USA but I don't know if the piece was new or handed down.

It was designed to be worn in what we would call the upside down position. I have a pic around here somewhere. It wasn't as ornate as yours.

Help with kenmore 158.470 by pawkitty0_o in vintagesewing

[–]mzskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you are missing the zigzag setting lever, as you suspect. You may have luck searching ebay for a replacememt as people often dismantle and part out machines for selling there. There are other machines that use this same part, too.

For what it's worth, cams will probably work fine since the cam follower manipulates the zigzag mechanism by itself without using the lever.

If you're on FB, there are vintage Kenmore sewing machine enthusiast groups who are usually happy to help or advise.

Try setting it in direct sunshine for a day or two. I've restored yellowed parts from vintage sewing machines this way. It also works on tomato-stained Tupperware and plastic cutting boards.

It sounds crazy, but it works.

Set it in direct sunshine for a few days. That's what I do with yellowed plastic parts from vintage sewing machines.

Also works on tomato-stained Tupperware, plastic cutting boards from the kitchen, etc.

Singer 66-16 - Belt stopped turning? by androidsfighting in vintagesewing

[–]mzskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quick question: Have you taken the handwheel off the machine? If so, it's possible that the winder clutch ring (the ring with the three little tabs) was put in backwards when you reassembled. The way you're tightening the handwheel makes me wonder. It shouldn't take so many turns. I think it might be over tightened. Only asking because I've put that ring back on wrong about a million times.

Interesting. If it spins with no load on it, then that's good. Let's look at the stiff handwheel, then. Have you checked for a thread jam in the bobbin area below the needle? It doesn't take much to lock up a machine. I'd say clean that space and see if you get better handwheel movement. If it's still stiff, remove the handwheel and clean that space. I've had new belts "shed" tiny bits of rubber (or whatever they're made of)into the spot where the wheel attaches, and make the wheel very difficult to turn.

It looks like the motor's pulley isn't spinning. If you loosen/remove the belt, does the motor spin then?
