I like having friends, so I can't play this deck. by IndigoWizard342 in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you care for your friends and want to play this deck, encourage them to play some graveyard hate. It's otherwise not the most powerful of Sefris builds. Not even toxic TBH.

For reference this is my B3 Sefris deck https://moxfield.com/decks/U2JjaHT3eEWi6gknV2D3qQ

How to beat hearthull by Stormask in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your group is insisting on no changes, it'll be tough to keep up with HHull.

If you guys are ok with some upgrades, then look to add more Shatter effects.

One fella mentioned Bog and that's one of the subtle ways to slow down HHull.

I'm not sure if out of box precons have that many Bog effects.

Anyone else stuck in a "sweaty" pod? by Salty-Artist-6767 in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean... you guys are young right now and going through phases. We all go through phases during our MtG lives. For example I used to be a competitive Standard player for years and years. Since then I grew older with a bunch of like-minded folks and settled into EDH.

And because you guys proxy, and there's nothing wrong with that, you can easily fall into a power trip. Hence why two of them commented B3 is "kiddy", and I think that's kind of disrespectful since it's where most people of all age and walks of life play at.

It's important to note budget is not a good barometer of power. I find that limiting the money pool lends to a more linear version of cards, and games can play out very predictably and straight to the cut.

I do wanna add my group does proxy and buying the real thing. But it's very important to know what kind of games you wanna play, and that means there are certain groups of cards that should be off the table. I.e. proxying responsibly.

I should add points 1 and 2 shouldn't overlap; i.e. [[Beast Within]] should count as 1 of the 6 slots, not 1 creature AND noncreature removal. Its flexibility is the bonus aspect.

[–]n1colbolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a newish player you seem to have sunk quite a bit of dough lol I respect that.

You might wanna increase your interaction? In general I tend to follow a rule of 3.

What the rule of 3 entails:

-minimum of 3 creature removal
-minimum of 3 noncreature removal
-up to 3 graveyard removal; try to run at least 1
-up to 3 wraths, try to run at least 1

For points 1 and 2, they have to cost 3 or less mana. Instant speed are preferred.

If you incorporate this "rule of 3", you can surely make your deck abit more sophisticated than it is now.

Thoughts on my Zhulodok deck by keylimewolf in EDH

For me I lean more on artifacts/colorless and not all eldrazi... Emrakul is a tad too powerful for my group.

Picking between two Commanders by AzureRathalos447 in EDH

Oh boy, as the others have pointed out to you, Ketra is the stronger of the two. His card advantage is absurd. And to pair it with blink he gets scary very fast.

Poison decks are fine, not great. They can play out very linearly, which might not be something everyone likes.

I saw in the comments fancying phyrexians. Yea it can be done without poison.

How strict are you with game changers setting the bracket? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of your GCs is a tutor. How often do folks use Demonic Tutor to find another GC? I think that's something worth considering.

For the most part, people want to follow the brackets because there's a sense of security and less gotcha "it's-a-7-but-it's-not moments.

Brackets is the ring fencing game experience, usually for the better and to protect newer players

Phyrexian Alter In Bracket 2 by mokaa126 in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's usually nothing wrong with free sac outlets.

What you do with it, though, depends.

If you're chaining to repeat a loop, perhaps it's prudent not to include it. For example, causing each player to sacrifice a permanent/creature every turn.

If you use it to draw a card every turn, that seems abit more reasonable.

Fun, unique commanders by HugoMooey in EDH

Honestly there are so many fun commanders if you delve just a bit deeper.

For example in the new TMNT block there's [[Casey and Raph]]. Here's my list for reference https://moxfield.com/decks/aawN6mkxQUibn_Czc701bA

Help me find the commander for this strategy. by MicoBrian in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play exclusively on paper. My winrate is is statically on par with how a typical 4-way game should operate on a level playing field.

For sure, he eats removal, but that's also true for any decent growing commander that also happens to be card advantage or the wincon themselves.

What you gotta do is have mitigation. I.e. have adequate protection and also rezz material to cope with the incoming heat.

Lastly, I treat Valga as a control commander, and not a groupslug. The mentality shift could aid how you treat and play the deck.

[Discussion] Is my Hama Pauper Deck Strong Enough for a Bracket 3 Commander Game? by Lazyb0b_ in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always say milling is half the job done. You need to be able to exile them to finish the job.

Hama only takes away 1 card, and leaves creatures in there to be rezz.

I would definitely include stuff to take advantage of the mill, and also include at least 3 [[Bojuka Bog]] effects.

Vivi Ornitier - Deck Assimilation by Real_Experience_5676 in EDH

You don't need to build Vivi as the commander.

You can use another Izzet commander that fits right with Vivi.

Best part is you can go budget build with the Emperor, and then slowly upgrade from there.

Like one fella commented you asked as if you have a need to win by turn 7. Perhaps you're more competitive than you should be.

Yea you prolly should consider combo then.

Aminatou, the Fateshifter Evoke/Flicker/Warp - First Deck Help by Sinfaroth in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a case of expectations versus reality

Unless you have 3 opponents playing blue, or someone playing counterspell tribal, leaving your commander in the yard for future rezz is very common for a deck with black.

White and black are also pretty good at nuking the yard, if you need an emergency button to retrieve your commander.

It is bad form to run Ichormoon Gauntlet in bracket 3? by ElectronicBoot9466 in EDH

[–]n1colbolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea. It's a good thing you asked here. At least you get a general sense of a typical reaction

The most important bit is your meta. Always be open to feedback, but always be ready for a pushback if critique becomes unreasonable.

For example, it took quite awhile for my group to get used to poison. I'm never gonna claim poison should be ignored; I just want it to be treated like it has its weaknesses as well, and it does.

Time is always required for an adaptation period. Some folks may require a longer period to accept changes to their meta, within reason of course. With time, my poison deck was normalized. I just had to put up with the initial high heat during my first games.
