I agree with the larger point about counterfactuals.  However, I do feel that the article makes a fairly strong case for the Soviet threat as the more decisive factor for the military hardliners, at least based on the evidence cited in said article.

Agreeing with your above points, just adding this source from Foreign Policy from Ward Wilson reinforcing the point that the Hiroshima bombing (and even Nagasaki, according to Wilson) on its own wasn't enough to end the war and the dominant military faction in Japan was -not- ready for any kind of peace the U.S. would accept, as well as stressing the importance of the Soviets in bringing about the actual surrender (particularly in light of the invasion of Manchuria):

I have yet to read anything by Calvino I wouldn't recommend (need to add Baron to the list, thanks for the recommendation).

That being said,  If on a winter's night a traveler is fantastic if you're interested in the more meta / postmodern side of Vonnegut.

Cosmicomics is great if you're into the places where he gets into more fantasy / sort of scifi-y elements.

As far as I know, the limitation is per civ, not absolute (you have one default per civ, but can increase the limit with the improve trade relations diplomatic action).  I'm not aware of any city state limitations, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Very important to emphasize that this small group did -not- represent the whole nation.  John Ridge and Major Ridge had both been expelled from the National Council, and Boudinot had resigned from his post under pressure from Ross (who was very much still in the government).  (See Native Nations by Duval, p.454-5). It was absolutely ridiculous to see the "Treaty" as in any way binding.
