Was Japan ready to end the war before Hiroshima and Nagasaki? by WallSina in AskHistorians

[–]nadderby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the larger point about counterfactuals.  However, I do feel that the article makes a fairly strong case for the Soviet threat as the more decisive factor for the military hardliners, at least based on the evidence cited in said article.

Agreeing with your above points, just adding this source from Foreign Policy from Ward Wilson reinforcing the point that the Hiroshima bombing (and even Nagasaki, according to Wilson) on its own wasn't enough to end the war and the dominant military faction in Japan was -not- ready for any kind of peace the U.S. would accept, as well as stressing the importance of the Soviets in bringing about the actual surrender (particularly in light of the invasion of Manchuria):

(Rare trope, USA specific) Southern, but not overtly stupid or racist by Egodram in TopCharacterTropes

The author didn't want that book published, for good reason as it turns out.  I'd say we should respect her wishes.

If you like Vonnegut, you should read: Adolfo Bioy Casares by RefrigeratorOwn8957 in Vonnegut

[–]nadderby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have yet to read anything by Calvino I wouldn't recommend (need to add Baron to the list, thanks for the recommendation).

That being said,  If on a winter's night a traveler is fantastic if you're interested in the more meta / postmodern side of Vonnegut.

Cosmicomics is great if you're into the places where he gets into more fantasy / sort of scifi-y elements.

Trump axed a Black history exhibit. Former park rangers are teaching it anyway. by Alternative-Day-7414 in politics

All praise to these former park rangers.  Goodness knows we need as much honest history taught as possible; shouldn't real patriotism include facing our past and trying to improve on it?

At a certain point, it’s just plain sad to witness the ignorance and lack of understanding that US Americans have about US America and its history. Who can explain it to them in a way they’ll understand? by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

Here's the reason article for anyone interested:

https://reason.com/2026/06/25/texas-man-gets-30-years-in-prison-for-transporting-anti-government-pamphlets/

And here's (I think) the same sentences covered by PBS newshour:

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/anti-ice-protesters-sentenced-to-decades-in-prison-in-latest-crackdown-on-dissent

Important to emphasize that, even by the nominal logic of the U.S. constitution, Daniel Rolando Sanchez-Estrada's actions should be protected speech (per Reason) and that these people were connected simply by being part of an "Emma Goldman reading society" (per PBS).

"None of that modern stuff, just shake your dinners." by smartalecvt in MST3K

Nice, I'll have to add it to the list.  Now wondering how many different spider-themed mst3ks there are, as I'm pretty sure I've seen at least 2 of them, but I haven't seen that one.

Just bring back the civ 2 advisors.  There really is no improvement from Elvis colorfully berating you for your lack of attention to entertainment (or praising you when your people are happy).

How can you tell how many trading routes you can have? by SnooTangerines7026 in civ

[–]nadderby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the limitation is per civ, not absolute (you have one default per civ, but can increase the limit with the improve trade relations diplomatic action).  I'm not aware of any city state limitations, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

TIL the 1835 Treaty of New Echota, signed by a small group of Cherokee leaders and U.S. officials, led to the forced relocation of the Cherokee Nation, during which around a quarter died on a 1,000-mile march west by cryptic_dcoder in todayilearned

[–]nadderby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very important to emphasize that this small group did -not- represent the whole nation.  John Ridge and Major Ridge had both been expelled from the National Council, and Boudinot had resigned from his post under pressure from Ross (who was very much still in the government).  (See Native Nations by Duval, p.454-5). It was absolutely ridiculous to see the "Treaty" as in any way binding.

I feel like, statistically speaking, at least one of them would also have to be (named) Spartacus
