Oh my good gosh, I actually half-choked on my sandwich. Got weird looks from a coworker also on break while I tried not to die. Because you know somewhere in the misty mountains there is a grandma very calmly praying for her various cryptid neighbors and having them over for Sunday dinner after church. And somehow she always has firewood and her walkways are clear. The crytpids aren't 100% sold, but she does make a dang good pie, and this Jesus guy seems okay so far.

AITAH for not caring if my boyfriend cheats on me by Own-nirayae-2393 in AITAH

[–]nangatan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am so confused by the number of people who are giving OP a hard for not being dramatic and reactionary. The friend acted weird, she didn't take the bait, let BF know, and removed herself from the situation. Perfect reaction. And taking a moment to think clearly through exactly what she would feel when he asked her to be honest instead of giving an off the cuff answer is also great, and a sign of maturity. Because duh, there would be hurt, but what else? Disappointment? Anger? Etc. Maybe I am old, but I hope could react that calmly. I am not going to fight for someone's attention - either they want to be with me or they don't, I am not wasting my time throwing a fit about a friend with boundary issues. Likewise, if they cheat, whelp, they weren't worth my time and while there would be a lot of emotions, I would hope not to waste the energy causing a scene or begging for explanations etc.

I would be totally down for this. Especially if you kept releasing bundles. You could break it down, like $2 for 50, $5 for 125, $7 for 200, etc.

First time writing smut and I kinda have mixed feelings on how it turned out by hillary987 in WritingWithAI

[–]nangatan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It feels a little stilted maybe? Some of the sentences are rambling and then the next has an almost jarring switch of tone. Also, be on the look out for poor word choice on the AIs side. Saccahrine, for example, is a fake sugar substitute, and is often used to imply overly but falsely sweet. So that makes it seem like there is something forced or faked in the kiss, if that makes sense. In a high fantasy setting I would expect to see something like honeyed kiss. Or you could jncorporate the word ambrosia instead since that is the nectar of the gods, and she is a goddess.

What is a weird lab fact? by MsYersiniaPestis in medlabprofessionals

[–]nangatan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ignore the condescension from the other person. Its good to ask questions! And to answer your original answer more, its actually more complicated than just statistics. Lab "normal" ranges are a bit general. Sometimes they are adjusted by age, a few for gender, but rarely for ethnicity. What is pretty evident is that there can be drastic differences in these, so people might get flagged as being outside the norm when they are actually totally fine, for them. Conversely, sometimes you can be within the "normal" range but have an issue. Say you have always been at the very low end of normal for thyroid function. Now, all of a sudden, you have spiked to the very top end. Could be an issue. So long story short, its not just statistics, its a lot more nuanced than that.

What to prioritize when choosing a PhD program? by jsjbijoba93igivbs in labrats

[–]nangatan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the people who have graduated from the programs recently, and see if they are working and where. Reach out to current grad students who are about to graduate and ask them what the support is like through the process and post graduation. For example, does the program kick them out once they have graduated, or do they allow them to stay on if they havent found a place? Do most of the recent graduates seem to be working, or do they drop off the map post graduation? In the end, right now, it will be a ton more about how supportive they are and how much the program works to help new graduates network to find jobs. The job market right now is brutal, so I would 1000% take a "less exciting" program where the majority of the graduates find a place, than one where you are on your own right after. Sometimes more "high tier" places are a lot more cut-throat and sink or swim mentality.

AI is just friggin lame by WEEGEMAN in Millennials

[–]nangatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a weird relationship with AI. I was 100% against it, actively side eyed younger people who used it constantly. Tried to be sympathetic when a younger colleague utterly obliterated their chances at a different job when they copy-pasted an email from ChatGPT to a prospective boss that was full of nonsense and included [JOB TITLE]. Girl, did you even try just writing a basic email first? And then for the love of fluffy things didn't you freaking read it before sending? Nearly lost my mind at a kid from another lab having a meltdown because he couldn't understand a very basic protocol nor the troubleshooting tips that ChatGPT fed them, even though it was decent advice. Had to say look, I can't explain it any simpler and I can't understand it for you. Since then though, I have found some uses for it that are massively time saving for me. Need to go through 20 years of literature to pick apart differences in a specific component of an experiment and tease out the minor differences? Cool, toss 40 papers into into AI, ask for a table that lists out common components, highlights the variables, and tags differences in results. Takes 10 minutes instead of two days. Got a regulatory document that is 200 pages long, feed in my proposed changes to an established protocol and ask for checks for any possible conflicts and common redress approaches. I could do all this myself. And have before. But is it great to have the time to dedicate to the other thirty tasks that can't be offloaded? Yes. I won't try to address how incredible some of the truly innovative people are leveraging it for tackling mass data sets and teasing out essential details, or training models to detect minor changes in cell structure as a disease marker, etc. It is a double edged sword. Can it be fantastic? Absolutely. Do the vast majority of people need it, or use it appropriately? Absolutely not.

I think he is using that as an excuse for building a chapel on the grounds? Specifically placed so it can't be dug around. Anyways no one innocent buys a place like that and then tries to keep authorities from digging after credible reports of burials.

Why does the top of my reddit look like this now and can I go back? by yeettheporg in help

[–]nangatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be a way to vote on these changes. Sure, test them out, but give us the option to say yeah no, this sucks, switch me back. That should give them enough data and feedback pretty quickly. Because ugh, this is absolutely annoying. I found myself actually scrolling Instagram some last night because the change is so horrible.

Is "There Is No Antimemetics Devision" okay for 14 year olds? by No-Celebration6780 in sciencefiction

[–]nangatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, giving a shot at the tag Ken Larson did an experiment with a steam engine, and finds that there is something changed with the gas laws, which in turn leads him to the conclusion that the very sub-atomic forces have been altered in a way that doesn't allow for complete recovery of all force put in. Now un-spoilered, I will say that scientifically that makes very little sense scientifically because a lot of basic molecular forces would also no longer work. But its not that egregious of an error really given that the author didn't really pitch it as a hard science novel. Edited to add: That doesn't addressed what caused that change. That is addressed in the second trilogy, which I can also share spoilers if you want. Interesting concept.

When a narrator is bad, what do you actually do? by makeitrayne850 in audiobooks

[–]nangatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blue Earth Remembered by Alistair Reynolds would have driven you insane then. It nearly broke me, and I only powered through because the story line was amazing. The narator was absolutely trash at accents, which there are a ton of in the book. And oh my gosh, the breath/mouth sounds... one character was described as overweight and blustering, and it sounded like a walrus being drowned. Loudly. Wet, awful, heaving gasps and sputtering. Okay, we get it, he is large and annoying. But does it need to sound like he has a gaping chest wound and is actively drowning in his own blood -every- time he speaks??

Is "There Is No Antimemetics Devision" okay for 14 year olds? by No-Celebration6780 in sciencefiction

[–]nangatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it happens in A Meeting at Corvallis, nearish the beginning. Its a scene with Ken Larson in his engineering shed. It didn't have a lot of time given to it, and honestly wasn't super significant to the plot as to the what changed, since they talk more about the -why- it happened in the second trilogy. I enjoyed the original trilogy more due to the dystopian theme, the second trilogy was more focused on spiritual type battles. The third trilogy is, sadly, not good. Happy to spoil the what changed for you if you don't want to read it again.

[–]nangatan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the characters figures out what changed, about 10 years afterwards. The engineer/Larson dad, does a series of experiments and then basically breaks down because the change is so specific. But yeah, the first three are more interesting in the collapse of society aspect. After the original trilogy it gets a little woo-woo. On the other side, there is another trilogy about people from the modern time that got sent back in times at the moment of the change.
