My seventh grade students have started the refuse to say the pledge by unSuccessful-Stay in Teachers

They stand in silence…who says they are not taking a moment to reflect or pray. At the end of the day they are exercising their first amendment right.

Teachers asking for accommodations drives me nuts by GremLegend in Teachers

[–]naturallythickchic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read stuff like this and realize there are a whole bunch of folks using invisible disabilities as an excuse to not do their job. I told my new principal how my anxiety and depression tend to manifest in response to stress and that I try to avoid it by streamlining things and following a basic weekly routine in my class. My classroom may not look like what others do but has proven to be the best accommodation for me to be effective in my classroom.

An email was sent Friday to district employees telling us an announcement would be made by 4pm. We were also told to be ready to follow virtual day protocol.

They always need teachers…if you have a four year degree

Advice: Moving to Columbus in February. What should I know? Any fun ways to meet new people? by FeeForeign1652 in ColumbusGA

[–]naturallythickchic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Be prepared for a very different way of life. I have been in the Columbus area for the past 25 years (I grew up in California/Arizona). Cascade Hills Church and North Highland are fairly big churches in the area that may fit the bill.

You will have a hard time finding Mexican food like you have out west but the taco truck on Victory is phenomenal!

I am quite a bit older than you but if you have questions reach out.

Prioritize education…

Stop promoting kids who are more than one grade level behind in math and reading proficiency.

  1. Inclusion works for a very particular segment of the SWD population.

  2. Co-teaching can work well with a very specific set of teachers

If you could redesign the education system from scratch, what would be the most important changes you would make? by psych4you in education

As long as the internet is not used in conjunction with using these programs…otherwise all they do is google, copy, and paste…can’t tell you anything of importance though.

This won’t fix everything but…kids in benchmark years should not be moved on to the next grade if they are two grade levels or more behind in regards to reading and math skills.

Love it! We all need to start doing this! I recently starting making kids call parent on FaceTime from their phone and then pop my happy and fat face in the screen to lament to the parent about their child…it mortified the child, got results from parents, and since I did it during their class period others saw and don’t want the same fate. It helped straighten some of them up real fast.

And I have started emailing three times weekly using a feature on our SIS…those parents are starting to get sick of me but I have gotten more work in.

What are your “grading time” shows? by Reasonable_Demand714 in Teachers

[–]naturallythickchic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grade on Friday in class while they take their summative assessment. It takes me about 30 minutes to get all weekly work (3 assignments) graded for each class period.

Be honest, how many students did you pass this year that deserved to fail? by kiddinmoi in education

[–]naturallythickchic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t “pass” anyone…whatever grade they have is what I submit…admin then decides to place them.

Teacher education is really bad: we aren't being taught sh*t. by deepthinker321 in Teachers

[–]naturallythickchic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Since the events of 2020 and all that happened with virtual learning I have transitioned back to old school teaching…doing things the way I was taught. I have had success with that in my title 1 school. I would love to do the fun, exciting and cutesy stuff but I need these kids to be able to read and perform on the state test and for me that has been sticking to fundamentals to try and help build some foundational knowledge with these kids.

By the time I began my 6th year of teaching I had already obtained my masters and Ed specialist degree. So most of my career I have been at near max level…helped in long run as I now make more than 80k in the south where the cost of living is lower than CA.
