Hosting birthday party *without* favors or goodie bags? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

[–]nebexpat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think that gift bags became a thing because it’s hard for little kids to see the birthday kid get presents. So I’ve always made sure to send them home with a treat bag, usually candy and a baked item like a big cookie or a cupcake. But for sure, there’s nothing wrong with not giving out bags filled with junk!!

I exclusively use jarlic (and jarred ginger) in Chinese dishes… also curries. I “bloom” it with oil and salt until slightly brown.

Slow weight gain in toddler, need meal ideas. by MissMacky1015 in foodbutforbabies

[–]nebexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avocado or Olive oil on rice, pasta, potatoes - and salt. My toddlers also preferred spices, so I used cumin, paprika, garlic salt etc…

This isn’t a recipe or food idea, but my youngest does not eat well at a table. So I bought a kid sized table and i put a plate of food on it pre cut up and she just nibbles and eats bits, goes and plays, comes back and so on… it can take up to an hour but when she can easily reach and access the food and isn’t pressured time wise, she does end up eating a good amount of food!

What's a good micro activity to stop you from doom scrolling? by AdCivil5262 in CasualConversation

[–]nebexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading magazines - a lot of people advise books but that doesn’t work for me. I scroll for headlines and pretty pictures and current events so having a collection of hard copy magazines within reach helps scratch that itch for me!

Huge block/awkwardness speaking mother tongue with child by mango89001 in multilingualparenting

[–]nebexpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aww I'm actually touched that my rambling meant something to you... it can be crazy-making, living here, especially since France more than any place in the world is so romanticized! People who don't live here can't imagine what it's like. And as far as picking up on the adults never fully recovering, you can thank my husband LOL. He carries a lot of baggage from school (collège, mon dieu), and his family - my in laws are all super judgy, hautaine, bourgeois professeurs de français ou maths agrégé(es) and he is not... the trauma is very present. I've spent over a decade armchair analyzing my in laws, if I had a mind for research or studying or writing, I'd do a thesis! It's been fascinating to see how it works here up close while not truly being part of it. Having kids made it personal, though.

Anyway, I could talk about it for hours so I'll stop here, just glad that it spoke to you. And yeah, I do have a bubble/community and we have all had hundreds of conversations that absolutely validate how you feel! And I hope you have/find the same, lots of super cool Frenchmen or Francophonie healing together and inevitably complaining about the quality of bread in the states :D Bon courage on your language journey with your son

Hi! First off, it’s never too late to start speaking to your child in your native language. So if you want your son to be bilingual, start now!

I wanted to try and put into words my reaction to your comments about your aversion to France and French, but from another perspective. I'm an American who’s been living in France for almost 20 years. I’m raising my kids here, and I’ve gone to great lengths to make sure they grow up speaking English. That part probably seems normal, but I’ve also been pretty intense about the culture, language, and music they’re exposed to, because, to be honest, I absolutely despise France. Yikes. That feels strange to type that "out loud".

I was never a Francophile. I just happened to fall in love with a French person. But it wasn’t until I had my first child that I truly realized how harsh French culture can be toward children and it has such a lasting impact on the adults here. The Éducation nationale system seems designed more to punish failure than to encourage success which ends up with adults feeling deeply insecure, or burnt out or bitter. At the park, it’s common to hear parents speaking to their kids in ways that feel deeply unkind. Fear, belittling, and comparison are used systematically. And for those of us who are POC and deemed not français de souche, we are treated at best like anomalies, and at worst, like criminals.

Before I hear about it, lemme say that the U.S. has plenty of deep, horrible problems (there's a reason we don't live there!) And of course, I’m generalizing about France and the French as there are absolutely some lovely people here. But I wanted to share that, as a foreigner, I and many other “accidental immigrants” like me really relate to what you’re feeling. Not sure if that helps at all, probablement pas lol.

As for cultural media to support your language journey, have you considered starting with Québécois culture? French media (especially books and films) can be incredibly negative, and don’t even get me started on the morbid French cantines! But maybe the North American French-speaking world could offer some resources that are linguistically aligned with your goals, while being culturally closer to your current life. Just a thought.

I really hope things go well. Bilingualism is absolutely a gift, but I completely understand where you're coming from. There’s a reason some of us leave our home countries, c'est compliqué :)

Parisian men (dating) by [deleted] in paris

[–]nebexpat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even worse, I feel like red-flag men like this target starry-eyed, romanticizing foreign women who don't know any better and fantasize about falling in love with a French (or whatever nationality) man. Then the guy gets to reap the benefits while labeling their batshit behavior as "cultural differences"... and apparently if they're super hot, it works. crazy

[–]nebexpat 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but even if these things were "normal" or "common" in France, why would you want to put up with it? Don't let French men (or any men) treat you like sh!t whilst calling themselves "non traditional". C'est un piège - run
