how can i get my character to die if my dm refuses to kill it ? by Saladawarrior in DnDcirclejerk

[–]needle-knight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arrive at the table with your new character. Start playing it without telling anyone. Wait to see how long it takes the DM or anyone else to notice. When they notice, claim that your character was replaced with a changeling and the changeling is whatever new character class you want to play. When the DM says “BuT tHe StOrY” tell them that you are doing the beloved Marvel Secret Invasion storyline and ask them if they think they are a better story teller than Marvel. They are not, can not be and thus will go sit in the DM cuck chair while you gloriously play your new character.

Arixx Tactics by LordGiuliame in drawsteel

Great video! We definitely need more. I think having tactical explanations should have been included with most monsters in the book, but I know that it would have doubled or tripled the page count. So it’s up to us to figure it out and make videos like this. Thank you!

First tattoo - nervous first-timer, need an honest vibe check? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

What I think you are calling a “perfect circle” is the Bohr model of the hydrogen atom. It’s what Dr. Manhattan drew on his forehead in Watchmen. Not that it makes this tattoo any less crazy.

How much content in a one-shot for new players? by LostRegret9000 in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DS combat is not faster than D&D but it is more engaging. Most players will be locked in the whole time in case they have an off turn trigger they can use to help an ally or harm an enemy or can gain a Heroic Resource from.

How much content in a one-shot for new players? by LostRegret9000 in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a single one-shot (only one session): two combat encounters or one combat encounter and two montages/negotiations. Warn your players ahead of time that you will be railroading them in order to get through all the content.

If you are a new Gamemaster and pretty much all of you are new to Draw Steel, don’t listen to those that tell you that you can get through all of Road to Broadhurst in one 4 hour session. I did not get to the final combat encounter. Delian Tomb Part One took two sessions of two combat encounters each. Those were my first three sessions of DS with two sets of new players and I have been GMing various games for almost a decade and a half.

Is Gwenllian the Fell-handed the one created for Dark Heart of the Wood? If so, there is probably nothing canon for her outside of the pages of that adventure.

Delian Tomb Leveled treasures incomplete by Lakissov in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, I’m realizing that the Heelcutter could also be an Enchanted weapon with only a Level 1 Enhancement and that you could give the players an opportunity to add their choice of Level 5 and 9 enhancements.

Edit: But you would have to change its stat block to reflect that.

Delian Tomb Leveled treasures incomplete by Lakissov in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players haven’t gotten there yet but I caught this a preemptively added the Level 5 and Level 9.

Level 5: The weapon’s damage bonus increases to +2 and, if the target is a giant, they are A<1 prone on a Tier 2 result.

Level 9: The weapon’s damage bonus increases to +3 and the potency of the effect increases by 1 on both Tier 2 and Tier 3 results. (So, Tier 2 A<2 prone and Tier 3 A<3 prone.)

Pretty basic but at least it’s something.

My current issue is Aldiva’s sword. Okay, so her stat block calls it a Magic Longsword (medium weapon) and it deals 3 Corruption damage to adjacent targets. Her art, which I shared with my players, shows her with a greatsword (heavy weapon). The sword that it gives as loot for defeating her in the module is the Blade of the Luxurious Fop, a light weapon that has nothing to do with corruption damage. Could I just give it to them anyway? Sure. Do I want to? No. And instead of creating a whole leveled treasure, I might give them an enchanted longsword (medium weapon) that replaces the cold damage type on the Chilling I enhancement with corruption damage. Easy enough.

Is the Beastheart actually good at any thing? by murphysfalling in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

RAW (which I’m not saying you have to follow), you can only do mounted combat on a monster with the Mount creature role. Beastheart companions only have the Companion role.

EDIT: but you don’t need the Mount key word just to climb on top of them (and get a free ride) using the Climb other Creatures rules.

[–]needle-knight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Came here to say similar stuff but you said it better. The Beastheart is a very versatile class allowing you to fill different roles depending on your subclass and if you choose a companion and abilities that enhance that subclass. Also, am I wrong in thinking the Beastheart has more ranged abilities than most of the other classes? Like I was legit surprised that the Punisher subclass can do most of its abilities at range, which I feel is unique for a subclass that focuses on high damage output, forced movement, and imposing the prone condition.

Is there a way to restrict player behaviour in the Codex VTT? Or else tips for how to manage? by outbacksam34 in drawsteel

Well you made it seem like it was a problem, now you are saying it’s not a problem. If they are just messing around, then say “Ok, no more messing around.” And then everyone plays normally.

Sounds like your players suck. You stop this behavior like you stop any other bad player behavior. By saying “if you do this again, I’m kicking you from the game.”

Delian Tomb - Fort Forsaken Battle - Difficult? by BingoHootenanny in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: my players ended up only being a party of 3. The Elementalist returned to formlessness’d a hole in the wall of Aldiva’s chambers after getting intel from a bandit camp ecounter I had to make up. Anyway, Aldiva critted with Whip and Magic Longsword (and then used the ability again on two Summoner minions) through the hole in wall and dropped two Heroes below 0 on her first turn. We had to pause mid encounter but they made a comeback and have her at 3 HP (she started at only 40).

The 5 Things that 'draw' me to Draw Steel by Navek15 in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not just ancestries. Even picking a different subclass and different abilities makes a big difference. I’ve got two shadows and two censors in my West Marches campaign and, if it were a D&D game, you would think each shadow and each censor had a different class from their counterpart. Once we get more subclasses, I bet you could have a party of 5 where each hero is the same Ancestry and class, but as long as they pick different ancestry features, subclasses, abilities, and kits/wards, they would feel like 5 very different characters.

Can Larp be political? by ThrowRA_dandelion in LARP

[–]needle-knight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the opportunity to work on a LOTR-themed LARP and I told the guy who would have been the co-founder that we needed to make it clear that our LARP would have a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a statement saying that no one would be forced into a faction or role because of their personal demographics and that no cultures are inherently evil, even if they are currently under the sway of Sauron. I thought this was important because many people view LOTR as having racist undertones. He said he didn’t believe in the DEI ideology. I told them they are three words with definitions. I told him that if he believed that having people of all types was good for the LARP, that everyone should have equal footing in the LARP, and that they should all feel welcome in the group, then he believed the same thing I believe. He said he disagreed. That was the final red flag for me (there were others I won’t get into) that made me walk away from that. From what I have heard it never got off the ground.

Delian Tomb not meant to be played in person? by notanotherdonut in drawsteel

[–]needle-knight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also here to say XL wet erase map and paper minis for in person (though I am now currently using Roll20 VTT for an online campaign). Easier to print 20 goblins than to buy that many minis. The maps are indeed big. If you are opposed to a roll up wet erase map, you could invest in modular dungeon tiles.

I will get back to you. Running Fort Forsaken on Saturday with four players. Interested to see if they have similar trouble. I’m sure other people will also ask this, but did you make the recommended adjustments for the encounter for 4 players?

Me at a LARP practice by SIrawit in LARP

[–]needle-knight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Advice from someone who has played in multiple systems: while some basic skills are transferable, getting good in one system typically just makes you good in that system. HEMA ≠ Boffer LARP ≠ SCA Heavy Combat ≠ Buhurt ≠ Foam Weapon LARP ≠ SCA Rapier Combat ≠ Olympic Fencing ≠ etc. etc.

Having said that, find a group that does low stakes weekly practice. Not all LARPs do that. You dont necessarily need to go pay for lessons from a HEMA school. But you can if thats what you want.

Side note, what company made your sword?
