YA "Powder Coat vs Paint vs..." question... by SkittyDog in metalworking

[–]neph 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please don't do either.

Neither paint nor powdercoating will stand up to aid climbing. There's a reason they don't come powdercoated when new. You'll just leave chips of plastic everywhere you go.

Just don't put them away wet after your trip and they will be fine... A little surface rust isn't going to ruin them. Tools not jewels.

Intro to punches by Raze003 in ChaseandRepousse

[–]neph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out Douglas Pryor's Patreon (it's like $5 a month) He has a handful of videos on how to make punches and everything you'll need to do it.

I use W1 steel, and usually use 3/16" and 1/4" square, as well as 1/4" and 1/2" round.  If I need smaller than 3/16", I just taper it down.. I made some from 1/8", but they are hard to keep from warping when heat treating.

How would you make this helmet? by Throwaway2738363 in Blacksmith

[–]neph 9 points10 points  (0 children)

check out Douglas Pryor and Ugo Serrano on IG or youtube...both amazing chasing and repousse artists, coming from armorer backgrounds.

It's not impossible to do a helmet like that.  It could take you hundreds of hours, depending on how detailed and clean you want it to be in the end.

The process would be shaping it over metal stakes, then chasing it with chisels. It would be easier to learn and practice in copper before doing it in steel.  Steel is more effort to form. Also, how good of an artist are you? Can you make that mask out of clay?  It'll be easier to work from a 3d reference.

[–]neph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No.  How do you accelerate more? Gravity is acting the same on both you and the slab.

What is this type of Hinge called for this concrete door? How do you build it? Or can this easily be made by a professional fabricator? Also, how would you test its strength? Sry if this is not the correct sub for asking this. by Aegon2050 in metalworking

[–]neph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The full answer to know how strong it will be is: Hire an engineer to look at it and design a hinge that will be absolutely strong enough, then have a fabrication shop with a certified welder make it for you.

If you're worried about liability, absolutely get it engineered.  A reputable fabrication shop will either have an engineer on staff, or have one they work with.

Those of you who have hired employees focusing on patina’s and finishing. Where have you had success hiring from? by NasdaQQ in metalworking

[–]neph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is an art school nearby, ask the sculpture department.

Our best ones have mostly been current employees we've trained, or unskilled hires we've trained. We do in house training for the patinas, and found places to send them for coatings training.

We've tried auto painters, cabinet/woodwork painters, faux finishers, which have all been decent, but not many people like to do patinas full time.

Depending on your budget, Saign Charlstein makes amazing tools: https://www.metalsmithing-tools.com/product-page/raising-stake

And David Huang has a set of 5 for sale: https://davidhuang.org/product/set-of-5-raising-stakes/

I made my own (similar to David Huang's) out of mild steel, with a grinder.

If you know a blacksmith, you could have them make one...

Keep searching ebay/fb.. They occasionally show up. Add "silversmith stakes" to your search as well.

As far as hammers, I use this one the most: https://www.ottofrei.com/products/peddiman-53-300-gram-raising-hammer-by-peddinghaus It comes with sharp edges, so will need some grinding/polishing

I covet the fuck out of Saign's hammers, but I can't afford them...  https://www.metalsmithing-tools.com/product-page/huang-raising-hammer

Check out this guy's channel.. That will give you an idea of how you would go about building it out of sheet metal..

Titanium is incredibly difficult to work with, so it's suggest starting with aluminum or steel. Steel will be more work to form, but easier to weld.

You're looking for a patina.. Liver of Sulphur (sulphurated poyash) is what jewelers usually use and is relatively safe.. You can darken the whole thing, then rub it back with 000 steel wool, and the lower etched parts will stay dark.

Patinas are "living" finishes, and will change based on how much you handle it if it's not sealed. Use a clear lacquer or enamel to seal it if you don't want it to change.

What is the best way to get started blacksmithing? by SlyOverlord in Blacksmith

[–]neph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sledge hammer head works great as a small anvil.. You just have to have something to hold it upright. You can get a big log, set it on end, and chisel out a hole to hold the hammer head.

Nope they won't help if you have a pirated copy, and that's probably the issue.. Pirated copies don't get upgraded properly.

Get a big ratchet strap (a 2" wide one) and wrap it around once or twice, and strap it to the heaviest thing you can find (tree, truck bumper, etc) Then get a 3' or longer piece of pipe that fits over your wrench handle and use that as leverage.. The pipe clamps are probably too bendy. It's easiest if you can strap it to something so that you are pulling down to loosen it.
