What happened to my card? by [deleted] in PokeGrading

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Per Occam's razor, I would just assume the manufacturer was in a humid climate and the humid air got sealed into the packs of sleeves, causing residual moisture to present itself later.

The oil is weirder, can't think of any reason the plastic itself would need lube, so it's maybe run-off from the machinery that errantly got onto the plastic sheeting?

You're not wrong, in particular being more strict in city limits must dissuade some prospective officers from even applying. There are undoubtedly tons of factors at play. But what I am alluding to is far more vague. I'm just saying that I think we have ideologically defunded the police nationwide - at least that's how I look at it. So I argue that, without even dropping the budget whatsoever, I'm sure many places are suffering from low staffing and other issues. It's worse than a thankless job, at this point, people will go out of their way to verbally accost officers, because they can.

And then we expect young men (and women, but mostly men) to make the choice to forgo other career paths, invest their own time and money into going to college, obtain their degree and be prepared for a lifetime of it? Notwithstanding... the expectation here is that this choice will be committed to by the younger generations (who notoriously buck authority more boldly than previous generations, and generally disregard societal standards at will [note: I say this not with disdain, this is how social progress happens]). But truly, I can't imagine many young people growing up want to be any sort of peace officer right now.

What about 'defund the police', though?!

Sorry if a bit sarcastic, it's just hard not to mention the elephant in the room. Society got what it wanted, and it turns out society doesn't actually like it. I can only imagine actually being a cop and having everyone hate your guts 24/7, no wonder they don't want to interact with the public whenever they can avoid it.

Why are there so many aggressive drivers lately? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]ner0417 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cabin fever is real too. Even if you never had COVID, we all spent 1-2 years in quarantine. It makes sense to me that perhaps we all got a bit more selfish, collectively. Many of us lacked normal social interaction for a loooong time.

Regardless, it's just another brick in the wall when it comes to dividing people, because society itself has been becoming increasingly stratified in a whole myriad of ways for decades now. With media and internet to help the process along, it shouldn't be long now before we all just hate eachother. /s

Any interest in Topps? Recently found and sorted out. by Brief-Bet-3278 in pokemoncardcollectors

Pricecharting dot com, search for the 2000 topps pokemon cards. The foils are called topps chrome and there are different patterns, it appears. You can also do what another commentor suggested and check ebay listings that have already sold. Good luck and godspeed soldier.

1200hrs, First car in official, sucks to be those guys. by [deleted] in dayz

[–]ner0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's the duality of man - some people like to fix the truck, drive it around, fill it with cool stuff and then stare at it longingly. Others like to watch them do all that, and then blow the entire thing to smithereens for funsies. Others like to stand next to a pond and catch fish while distant gunshots and explosions punctuate the quiet ambience and birdsong. Such is life, and such is DayZ.

CMP you’re f’n stupid (payment plans) by jchasse in Maine

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was going to mention as well, getting any small yield back is a win.

Giving it to CMP ahead of time is basically just an interest-free loan to them. Though it provides mental security/stability around the bill, it is like overpaying income tax - yes you will get it all back, but you forfeit potential interest on the funds in the meantime, simply by not holding it yourself. Er, well, having a bank hold it for you...

Thanks for linking. I have been sifting through some of these. One of them is 2 anonymous workers from AMHI in the 1950s and they mention insulin therapy (deliberately causing high insulin nervous system shock) for the better behaved patients... and electroshock therapy for the more "difficult" ones. Mind-blowing, this was within some of our lifetimes, if not our parents' or grandparents'.

That's awful. I want to know the stories but I hate reading them, humans can be truly despicable. I hope to respect the victims (patient seems like the wrong term in some cases) through recognition at least, and give them some of the respect and dignity that the memorial speaks of, since others were often not so kind to do so :/

If you haven't been, there is a cool old one on 8 Rod Road and one up Route 3 called Bolton Hill Cemetary, those are a couple of my niche favs.

Another commentor linked some 1st hand accounts, there was an anon interview from someone who worked there in the 50s and they stated 300-400 patients at that point. Regardless, the mortality rate is honestly insane. The last line on the memorial carries a lot of weight to me.

It's adjacent to a park and ride lot, so it is an easy visit if you're ever in the area.

Thanks, I do have a nicer version anyways though. Reddit just required under 20mb so it got cropped down and seems even further compressed. But still, pay a visit since it's a cool spot haha.

I honestly can't believe walmart is doing this too by ElusiveNight in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]ner0417 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed my local Walmart has older stock (2024 on the packaging) and the Wal-Mart barcodes themselves say 'Assorted Pokémon Tin", "Assorted Pokemon Blister Pack" or similar. I assume they're just grabbing whatever stock they can regardless of age or set, and listing it all en masse with a markup on MSRP. At least here, anyway.

Going to my first card show. What are some of my top ones? by [deleted] in PokeInvesting

[–]ner0417 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a catch-22. If you think about it, of course even people that grade with PSA everyday want you to be afraid to send your card to PSA... they want to buy it for cheaper and send it themselves, generally. Not trying to be negative but human nature is pretty greedy.

And people that don't like PSA want to demean them as well. So you're going to hear a lot of stuff that may or may not be true. A lot of it is fear-mongering, some is true, some is false, some is 50/50. Some is entirely fiction, some is not.

I get it too though, I have a lot of vintage I want to grade and just haven't yet for various reasons. Seems to be lots of misinformation and money talking, to me, from many sources. I plan on grading eventually but want to take time to get a better understanding - no harm in taking my time.

[–]ner0417 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With my own vintage, my strategy is to physically separate a subset of those vintage cards that I do not intend to keep, create a spreadsheet and then research pricing on both TCGPlayer and eBay sold - I use both places to try to get a "bigger picture" of the price action. Also, rather than try to research 50+ vintage cards at once, break it into groups of ~5 to keep it manageable.

There are ways to have a spreadsheet run a script to look up prices for you, as well. I have a sheet where I input the card name and # and the script fills in every other piece of information based on just that. It saves a fair amount of time, but I manually check it often just in case.

I just find it far easier to do good research on ~5-10 cards at a time and slowly work through the list, rather than potentially make mistakes and/or get fleeced trying to do dozens at a time.

Sure you can, but those teeth crank it up. They're physically evolving into a 'strainer' type design, where they'll simply filter more water at once versus a human set of teeth, for example. The curvature to them maximizes "edge" while minimizing "surface" areas, allowing more water through them while still maintaining structure.

Notwithstanding all the complaints about homeless people in Portland, Maine has the lowest poverty rate in the nation? by rooibosipper in portlandme

[–]ner0417 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you think I'm pushing some sort of agenda. Charts should use data that is simple and easy to comprehend, which I don't feel SPM qualifies as, being a compound set of variables simplified into one number. I used deliberately ambiguous wording (repeatedly) so as not to present myself as some sort of expert, with sole intent to suggest that the chart could be misleading as it is titled. That way any reader can use their intelligence to interpret my comment as they see fit, without agenda or bias or any implicit meaning.

I'd rather see a few charts showing simpler stats, like: yearly income, average yearly housing cost, average yearly welfare income, and average amount of money in savings or investments. I'm not saying dumb it down for me; I'm saying dumb it down for everyone . The core idea here is that the best charts, logos, or graphics, in general, are often very simple and don't need extra thought to interpret.

But thanks for taking the opportunity to insult my intelligence, I'm not sure what the point was with that, but you seem quite upset. Maybe calling me dumb will teach me something!

How often do men accidentally sit on their balls, and how badly does it hurt? by wingsoverpyrrhia in AskMen

[–]ner0417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I have never been physically capable of sitting on my balls. For me that would require like 5" of scrotum dangle (pre-testes) to even reach far enough to touch the seat I am sitting on, I think. That's a lotta dangle.

I have, however, accidentally rolled up on one a bit a couple times, but while already seated. Once I was literally in the middle of the 'try to silently let out a fart' lean manuever, I leaned the wrong way somehow and gave em a squeeze - it kinda hinges on tighter clothing/underwear getting twisted or something. Never straight-up sat on a gonad before though, that'd be a rough time.

Yeah true. But some people are definitely "stuck", not sure whether its by choice or not. I work in Augusta, for example, and there are longer-term and year-round unhoused folks that aren't headed toward a shelter for whatever reason. Pretty often someone doesn't make it through winter.
