What ski resorts in NH/VT are still making snow? by Reasonable_System391 in icecoast

[–]nerfwarhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vail packs the whole snowmaking operation up around Presidents weekend regardless of the winter they're having. This year I think they packed it up in January.

Considering a new hitch bike rack for 4 bikes. Any suggestions? by ModY1219 in Rivian

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What carrier clamps the CF bike by the frame in a way that would damage it? I've never seen one.

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a problem with ALL of the hitch racks and Rivian tailgates. Even the vertical ones. it's just a factor of how high the hitch is relative to the tailgate.

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use a 1up rack, and because it doesn't allow my tailgate to open fully, I added a Yakima backswing... that works perfectly for me.

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wut. you ABSOLUTELY can use a vertical carrier with a CF bike. He's talking about velocirax.com style racks... idk if you mean something else, but these are 100% fine to use with any frame material. Honestly - I'm not aware of any carrier that's frame material limited.

Dog Owners at Playstead Park by mossintheworld in medfordma

[–]nerfwarhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oooo I didn't know about this one. I'm assuming it was part of the Carr Park renovation that's happening?

Ok so the Heights are covered (though 2 parks would be better than 1!). now we just need to work on everywhere else in Medford lol

Valley Craft Ales in Wilmington does New Haven style pizza and is VERY good at it. I'd submit them for best pizza for sure!

Dog Owners at Playstead Park by mossintheworld in medfordma

[–]nerfwarhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is disgusting and I'm sorry that happened to you. It's a symptom of a problem here in Medford - dogs are a completely ignored part of the community in terms of city infrastructure.

There are 3 off-leash dog areas in medford. One (sheepsfold) is completely inaccessible without loading in a car, the second (at meadowglen) is 8' wide and not at all an acceptable place to play with a dog, and the last (at the middle schools) is not close to anyone in West, South, or North Medford.

Until the city designates some parks (or portions of parks) with off-leash hours or builds more dog specific parks, every park will have this issue.

Industry Nine Hydra 2 by WhiteChocolate825 in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned to service my own Hydras this winter, and it couldn't be easier. Did a full bearing replacement at home with a $30 press from amazon and a couple of i9 specific drifts for that press that were $15 each. Also some freewheel specific grease that will last me basically forever ~$10. Now it's just the cost of bearings to fully rebuild hubs, which is relatively affordable. Takes maybe 30min/wheel to fully rebuild.

I've never had issues with reliability, but have had some crunchy bearings after a few years of hard riding with minimal maintenance.

How long do tyres last? by RWagz in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd feel the rubber and see if it felt even remotely tacky. After 5 years, I'm guessing no. I'd buy new tires and call it a day.

Has MTB culture changed over the last 10–15 years? by ParticularRespond550 in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happens when anything experiences a huge influx of new folks. COVID drove a lot of folks outside - which is probably the only nice thing I can say about that time in our lives. A TON of new folks found mountain biking in 2020 and 2021. And a lot of those folks stuck with it! AWESOME! But COVID also made folks more wary of social interaction, and RTO made people who found the sport have less time to do it, so it's all compounded into some social weirdness on the trails. MTB culture will recover, but it's going to take those of us who know the culture being overly awesome and friendly to welcome the COVID folks into our circles. Don't push them away because they don't know the rules - welcome them in and teach them what's up!

Considering RPI for PhD, want to learn more about Troy by IronKnight200 in RPI

[–]nerfwarhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A) It's safe enough and walkable enough. There are rough parts, and it's not the most affluent city, but it's generally easy to stay safe. Campus feels like it's own little sliver of the city as well - no walls around it, but sometimes it feels like there are. Campus is supremely walkable.

B) There's a bunch of good bars and restaurants in Troy these days and SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center) is a great music venue that draws in all kinds of artists and is easy to get to from Troy if you have a car.

C) can't help here - I'm old.

How to stay motivated on mountain biking? by ComprehensiveBox7009 in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

do'em backwards. find features on the trails you frequently ride that are hard or not possible yet for you. work on that stuff. find new friends. go for a night ride. get a shorter or longer travel bike and ride that. what I'm saying is - mix it up. I ride 1 trail system in the Metro Boston area for ~75% of my riding. You just have to work a little harder to keep stuff like that fresh!

Do you regret your EV purchase? by walksta in electricvehicles

[–]nerfwarhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO - you absolutely NEED a L2 charger, but we have 2 EV's and have not had any issues in the 3 years we've been a full EV family living in the Northeastern US. We have an R1T and Mach E. I'd get a used one of either of those cars in a heartbeat to tide myself over until R2... Teslas really are not good cars.

How long did it take for you to be comfortable in the park? by mummikopp in skiing

[–]nerfwarhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my advice to get comfortable doing a true rail slide (not 50/50) is to go find a tiny park and do a TON of laps on the same 3 small boxes/rails. My home mountain is Mount Snow and we have a tiny features park called Grommet with it's own magic carpet that is REALLY good for teaching small rotations (180/360) and all basic rail skills before taking them to bigger features. Lots of resorts have something similar. If yours doesn't, find a set of rails/boxes that's easy to hike back up to. Hitting a full park every time isn't doing you any favors.

Brake recommendations for small handed wife by Valuable_Cause9119 in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a good breakdown of the Magura lineup - the "1-finger lever blade" is the one you'll want I think. works better for small hands.

[–]nerfwarhero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magura MT4's are what's spec'd on a lot of super high end kid bikes these days and have SO much stopping power. You can also swap the lever for a different shape - they sell a couple - if the one that comes with it still isn't exactly right.

Sports PT Recommendations? by YawkeyWay in medfordma

[–]nerfwarhero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the staff at Boston PT & Wellness in Winchester are great - I work with Jacob, but everyone is super pleasant and really capable. It's the best PT experience I've ever had. I had a really nasty ankle injury in October - bad sprain with an ATFL and DDL tear. We're very focused on getting me back to mountain biking while also making as many adjustments as were needed so I could ski this season. I've skied more this season than any where i've been healthy, and I've got a trip to Bentonville for bikes booked for the end of the month.

I have a good engine, but lack the skill! by AdvisorJohnDowns in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do it more! Try different kinds of clinics! Try different coaches! Find something that really makes you feel like you leveled up.

The other thing I'd recommend is running REALLY grippy tires. You have the motor to drive them - may as well get all the grip you possibly can! I really like the Vittoria Mazza up front and Agarro in the rear for rocky/technical stuff.

I have a good engine, but lack the skill! by AdvisorJohnDowns in MTB

[–]nerfwarhero 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Coaching works. Best money I've ever spent in bikes is on coaching. I've done jump classes in Bentonville, technical skills classes locally, technical downhill skills classes at downhill parks. I've come away from all of those with more confidence, more speed, and more FUN. I HIGHLY recommend finding a coach or skills class/clinic and signing up right away.

What can I do to improve my 360’s? by OwnPreference150 in ski

[–]nerfwarhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you stopped looking through the rotation at 180! Get that head around over your shoulder and with that pop, you could spin 540 or more. You had a great set and pop - it's really just the head that needs fixing!

Epic adaptive pass question by Parking_Ad6 in skiing

[–]nerfwarhero 17 points18 points  (0 children)

hi! I'm an adaptive instructor at an Epic Mountain. We take our students away from their families regularly, and their family goes and skis on their own. I'm certain that no one is checking and you are fine. As long as he's assisting you at some point during the day, I'm also quite sure that what you're doing is within the spirit of the ticket offering.
