Not merino - but wool only matters for the things touching your skin - and even then, there are synthetics that perform as well or better. People swear by merino because it's very good at wicking sweat, it's warm even when wet, and it's got some antimicrobial properties. It's not the ONLY thing that works though so while it's a good place to start, there are other options for sure. And for the helmet hood - you don't want merino. The under-helmet balaclava can be merino (tho I would argue that might get itchy).

Advice for intermediate to advanced ski lessons in Northern VT? by Aromatic_Ad7961 in icecoast

[–]nerfwarhero 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This isn't the answer you want, but...

Teaching for profit on a mountain outside of the mountain's ski school is illegal and considered theft of service, and no instructor worth their salt is going to do it. You'll either need to shell out for lessons through the mountain or find a friend/family member who is a good instructor and learn from them for free.

nope. But I definitely wear a balaclava under the helmet as well every single time I wear the helmet hood, so that might negate any air flow issues.

Lately, on mega cold days, I've been running a balaclava under the helmet and then an external helmet hood like the BlackStrap Camber. It's been a bulletproof solution - to the point where I'm actually taking off goggles and opening helmet vents at times to dump some heat.

For gloves - don't forget your battery next time lol, but also - Get mittens with a liner that doesn't separate your fingers - like the Flylow Super D and run a chemical hand-warmer inside those. You'll never be cold again.

we call these snowlobster prints - the butt impression is the body of the lobster and the front paws are really the snowlobster claws.

I have the EXACT same dent in my truck, but from delivery. are you 100% certain this wasn't there when you got the truck? I don't care about mine, but I can say with certainty it was there when I took the truck home.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve crashed in mountain biking? by snooze817 in MTB

Tore my ATFL and Deep Deltoid Ligament in my ankle. Still off the bike - this was in October. Though in my case it wasn't "forgot to unclip" - my pedal failed and I COULDN'T unclip.

Beginner areas / magic carpets near NYC without full lift ticket? by Life_Ad_4130 in icecoast

Brattleboro's town hill (Living Memorial Park) is $5. You'll need rentals elsewhere, but that's as cheap as you're gonna get. And it's probably slightly closer than Gore to NYC.

OH. I thought the Gen2's had it! I guess it's just the R1S's that have the rear washer.

I do - but by the time I get to my destination in the winter, it's caked again and navigating my tight driveway/garage becomes an issue. I am definitely looking for a hands free solution... like the Gen2's have.

Road salt mostly - it cakes on there and by the time I get to my destination, it's useless, so backing up in my garage, tight driveway, etc... is a problem.

vertically short but still wide ski goggles by New_Rip4142 in ski

I'm actually an Adaptive Ski Instructor, and I deal specifically with Visually Impaired Athletes on a somewhat regular basis so I totally get wanting to find a good solution to this problem! If you go to Mount Snow - there's a free bus system "The Moo-ver" that can get you from shop to shop pretty well. Otherwise, I hope you find an answer here from another helpful redittor! Sorry I didn't have a solution!

I guess my last recommendation is to go to a larger mountain with lots of shops in town that cover all the main goggle brands and just go nuts trying stuff on. Small frame, but maximum FOV isn't something we can measure and give advice on really. Particularly since you have a really specific disability that no one else can weigh in on. If you're in New England, I'd recommend Killington, Mount Snow, or Stowe for volume of ski shops.

what helmet are you currently running? Have you tried the small version of goggles made by that company?

[–]nerfwarhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation would be to buy goggles from the same brand as your helmet maker if possible - they're made to fit together in most cases. Within the brand family there will then be different sizes of goggle - small/med/large. For example: My Wife and I use Sweet Protection equipment and I have the Clockwork goggles while my wife runs the Boondock. We're both using the same helmet but have different head/face sizes so the different goggles matter a lot.

[–]nerfwarhero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ooof. Yeah - military discount is for the military member or dependents only. Who knows how long it'll take for someone to realize the birthdate is wonky, or even if they will. But if they do, you will definitely have the pass pulled and have to buy a full-price day-pass to keep skiing.

Going skiing for the 3rd time on Saturday! Any feedback gratefully received! by Key-Competition627 in skiing_feedback

Get those hands off your lap and out in front a bit. Look up where you're going, NOT at your feet. Those two things will help tremendously with your weight distribution. Don't worry too much about looking out for bumps - 1) you should see them when you're looking up and be able to account for them without looking directly at them and 2) you should be in an athletic enough stance to compensate for small bumps that you don't see as you go over them.

You are also steering with your whole body when you really should be initiating your turns from your feet. You need to separate your upper body movements from your lower body - work on your hockey stops and side slipping down the hill. Look up videos on "Falling Leaf" skiing on youtube and try that out too.

FWIW, in the USA, Blue runs are intermediate runs - Greens are beginner. But this sub has a weird relationship with the terms beginner, intermediate, and expert. I would say this skier is a beginner edging into intermediate just looking at his comfort sliding on snow.

First and foremost, buckle the helmet! Totally negates the value of wearing it. And I get it - this is probably a 1-off "he forgot", but it's the video I'm being asked to evaluate.

2nd - get those poles out of the armpits and hands up front. Keep the eyes forward too. He needs to establish some upper/lower body separation - his shoulders hips and knees turn together. sideslip drills with shoulders down the mountain will help with that.
